LATEST UPDATE (4/26/08) - THE NINE AT NINE!

THE EVENT

So you heard the word FREE, saw that it was comic books that were free, and were interested enough to check out this website about Free Comic Book Day. Or maybe you've been to one of the previous Free Comic Book Days held at Fanboy Comics and were wondering about our plans for this year's event. Or maybe a sentient computer has hacked your mainframe and is redirecting all websites to this website because it feels strongly you need to be educated about Free Comic Book Day. Well, no matter which of those situations you've found yourself in, you're in luck, (well, depending on how malevolent the sentient computer is, I suppose) because Free Comic Book Day could not be simpler or better! You come into the store, we have some comic books available for you to choose from, you pick out a few of those comic books, and we give you the ones you selected! That's it!

Well, that could be it, but it's not. We always like to do more than the bare minimum at Fanboy Comics. I could describe all the stuff we're doing for this big event, but it'd probably just be for the best if you just looked at what we have scheduled for that day:

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

That's a lot of stuff going on! And that isn't even mentioning the hundreds of dollars in door prizes we'll be giving away every hour throughout the day--starting at 9:00 AM with the

Nine at Nine

Be in line at 9:00 AM and we will do a drawing for a chance to win nine amazing door prizes, including the Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus, a $99.99 value! We'll also be giving away variant covers, t-shirts and lots more! You must be present to win for this particular drawing, but not for the door prizes we will give away every hour thereafter!

If you're wondering what to expect from Free Comic Book Day, here are some pictures of last year's event!

The Comics

It's not really a secret that the main draw behind Free Comic Book Day is the free comics. Just look at the title of the event. Man, though, there are a lot of them. To help you figure out what you want before you get to the table, here's a list of all the comics we'll be giving away on Free Comic Book Day, along with pictures of the covers! Just click to view a larger version of the cover, but keep in that while the contents of these books won't change, some of the cover images might change between now and Free Comic Book Day.

We'll have all of these comics available when we open for the day, but we do only have limited quantities, so they're only available while supplies last. Hey, it's not Infinite Comic Book Day, although if science can figure out a way to do that, we'd love to be a part of it!

The First 50

One of our favorite things to do with Free Comic Book Day is reward those who are willing to get there early, and that's why we like to put together some special gift bags for the first 50 people through the door. What will be in these gift bags, you may ask? Well, each one will contain these Free Comic Book Day comics that will be exclusive to these gift bags (you can click any cover to see a larger version):

Atomic Robo and Friends Del Ray/Dabel Brothers Preview Drafted E.C. Comics Sampler Graphic Classics Love and Capes Maintentance Maximum Ride The Stranded Wizard Magazine How to Draw Sampler

What else will we be offering? Well, here are a few of the many items you can find randomly distributed throughout these gift bags:

One of $200 worth of gift certificates to Fanboy Comics

One of 25 movie passes to Mayfaire Cinemas

Coupons from local businesses including
Cuppy's Coffee, Chick-Fil-A, GameStop, and others!

Those are a lot of good reasons to get to Fanboy Comics early that, day, but we also have other stuff going on, thanks to our helpful sponsors! Read on!

Our Sponsors

We really think those First 50 bags are worth the wait, but that doesn't necessarily make the wait enjoyable. So, to make that hour before opening fly by, we've enlisted some help from some great sponsors:

Fanboy Comics would like to thank all of these sponsors for their generosity and, honestly, we think anyone reading this should buy more of their goods and/or services!

Mayfaire Cinemas

Mayfaire Cinemas
900 Town Center Drive
Wilmington, NC 28405

Mayfaire Cinemas is always a great help with Free Comic Book Day, and we appreciate everything they do to help us with it. This year, they've donated some great prizes (check out what they donated for our raffle, below) and they'll be hosting us at the theater the weekend of Free Comic Book Day--which also happens to be the opening weekend for the Iron Man Movie! How are we taking advantage of this fortuitous synchronicity? Well, check this out:

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
at Mayfaire Cinemas
Friday, May 2nd
6:00PM - 9:30PM
Iron Man Opening Night
Fanboy Comics will be giving away a limited selection of comics this night, including the Marvel Adventures Iron Man comic! People will also have the opportunity to register to win one of over $200.00 in Iron Man merchandise! And we'll have a preview of some of our silent auction items!
Saturday, May 3rd
1:00PM - 7:00PM
Free Comic Book Day
We'll still be giving out free comics like the two previous days and you'll still be able to register to win great prizes when you come to watch the Iron Man movie!

Just so you know, the free comics we'll be giving away at these events will be while supplies last. We don't anticipate any problems, but it never hurts to be careful!

Anita Trivette

Anita Trivette

Anita Trivette is a 27-year-old woman from Boone, North Carolina, who currently lives in the Wilmington area. She has a severe heart condition, and needs a heart transplant to live. The procedure is very expensive, and Anita's condition prevents her from working, so she has to rely on the kindness of others. There have been several fundraisers held in the area for Anita, and we at Fanboy Comics want to do what we can to help. To that end, we're holding two charity fundraisers to help Anita: a silent auction and a raffle.

THE RAFFLE

The theme of this raffle is "Get Set For a Year." Here, take a look at what the winner will get:

-A YEAR OF FOOD-

Chick-Fil-A is giving the winner of this raffle a free Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich Combo once a week, for a full year.
Estimated Value: $250

-A YEAR OF CAFFEINE-

Cuppy's is giving the winner of this raffle a free specialty drink once a week, for a full year.
Estimated Value: $180

-A YEAR OF MOVIES-

Mayfaire Cinemas is going to give the winner of this auction a movie pass, once a week, for a full year.
Estimated Value: $400

-A YEAR OF COMICS-

Fanboy Comics is supplying the winner with a subscription to ten comic titles for a full year.
Estimated Value: $350

You're welcome to add those values up and get a more precise value, but I'm pretty sure that combined they're over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. That's a lot of prize, and all you need to do is buy a $3.00 raffle ticket (although if you like buying in bulk, you can get four tickets for $10.00) and get lucky. All of the proceeds from this raffle will go to helping out Anita.

We've also gotten some runner-up prizes for the raffle!

-2ND PRIZE-

A $50.00 Gift Certificate to Thee View and a $25.00 Gift Certificate to Pandora's Box

-3RD PRIZE-

A $25.00 Gift Certificate to Yellow Dog Discs and a $25.00 Gift Certificate to CD Alley

Tickets will go on sale April 14th and be sold through May 5th, and the winner will be selected on Tuesday, May 6th. Good luck to everyone who participates!

Many of the bands who are playing at WE Fest are sending in CDs, T-Shirts, and Stickers. We currently have around 20 CDs, with more arriving every day. Hopefully we will get one from each of the 100 bands playing at WE Fest. All the CDs will be auctioned together in one big lot.
