Superman Confidential #1
Writer: Darwyn Cooke
Artist: Tim Sale
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
In the month of November, there are five Superman-specific comic series that have issues being released. And that’s not even counting books which feature appearances by Superman in his different clubs and organizations (or the stories featuring the other characters who wear his emblem—Supergirl and Krypto the Wonder Dealer). One of the newest Supes-series in the bunch is Superman Confidential, a sort of pop-art love letter to the hero and a recounting of his early adventures.
One look at the cover of this book and you want to love it; the pointillism background, the retro design, the hint of classic adventure. After the requisite crash-landing-on-earth recap (and the splitting of Kal-El’s capsule from a hunk of kryptonite), Superman is thrown into a battle with playing card-inspired villainous rejects. The opening scrum is over by the time you read the 8-page all-ages Teen Titans spread in the middle of the book (the book has more than 15 pages of ads and 22 pages of story—must this format be so standard?), and after that it’s familiar Clark-Lois-Jimmy storytelling (with Jimmy looking like a card-carrying member of the He-Man Woman Haters Club). The plot which leads into the next issue concerns the Trump-like megalo-millionaire Anthony Gallo. Gallo has opened a shiny new gambling and entertainment complex in the heart of Metropolis and Perry White wants to bring Gallo down. So he sends his intrepid reporting trio in for investigation. Gallo’s got his own secrets, such as a lovely ring that just so happens to glow a certain hue of emerald green. (Hint, hint…)
This story will eventually delve into the earthly origins of the kryptonite which becomes the bane of Superman’s existence, and this issue features some excellent moments, such as a disaster taking place while Clark is out on the reporting job rather than tending to his heroic duty. Seeing that conflict portrayed here is both familiar and fresh.
However, why is this book out? Superman die-hards will love it, and the art is unique among other titles on the shelf (it’s the polar opposite of Frank Quitely’s work on All-Star Superman), but what does Superman Confidential add to the canon? Is it just an enjoyable story, or another sure-fire cash-in? Does this book, along with Batman Confidential, fill in the weekly release gap for the titular character? The writing here is fine, but not extraordinary. Tim Sale’s art is calmly energized, but also feels somewhat wasted on what amounts to a run-of-the-mill story.
Creative teams will rotate on future arcs of this title, which will deal in major moments in Superman’s career. I just hope that they pack more of a punch than this one.
RATING: 2.5/5
Midnighter #1
Writer: Garth Ennis
Penciler: Chris Sprouse
Inker: Karl Story
Colorist: Randy Mayor
Publisher: DC/Wildstorm
Price: $2.99
Fans of The Authority will know this member of the team quite well. And Batman fans will see plenty of the caped crusader in the Midnighter, enough to make him instantly familiar. He’s a brooding figure, chock full of attitude and an independent streak. More notably, the Midnighter is also gay, married to fellow Authority team member Apollo (pseudo-Superman), and is one of those few comic heroes who’s openly homosexual (because you know there are plenty who just haven’t flown out of the closet yet.)
This is also week #3 of the Wildstorm relaunch, and Midnighter #1 figures into this big, bad “World Storm” event. In terms of action and violence, this book falls somewhere smack-dab between Wildcats #1 and Deathblow #1—a pleasingly fierce middle ground.
The Midnighter, who with Apollo is adoptive parent to spirit entity/Authority leader Jenny Quantum, picks a war-torn spot on the globe, Afghanistan, so he can drop in and do some good. “Some good” involves taking out a tank group. (Are they US soldiers? Seems that they are.) He wants to stop a sale of weapons to warlords in order to lessen the internal conflict between Afghan countrymen. You really get to see Midnighter’s strengths in action (super-speed, heightened reflexes, keen awareness, unearthly strength), and Garth Ennis write the perfect scenario to demonstrate all of the above. Midnighter is unmerciful, and his view of appropriate justice can be a bit much to take on the grotesquery radar. Which doesn’t mean it’s not a lot of fun.
While teleporting back to his base, Midnighter is hijacked walking through the “door” and is taken to a sensory-deprived location where he’s forcibly hired for a new job, as a put-upon contract killer. He’s directed to either assassinated the most infamous of mass murderers, or suffer his own end.
Upon reaching the final page of this issue, any negativity or doubt you have about the series will be one-upped by the cliffhanger of an ending. You’ll just have to see how this one pans out and adds up. But the Midnighter himself is such a damn intriguing character that he should be enough to get you to climb on board. The super-masculine hero/effeminized sexuality angle, the fact that he’s got two hearts, his abilities, and his heroic ambivalence—so much is squeezed into these pages that it’s impossible not to be intrigued. Ennis is a master of hyper-violence, but he also consistently manages to put the violence on such a heightened, ludicrous level that it’s humorously devilish.
Chris Sprouse’s artwork is highlighted by a polished simplicity, almost a complete counter to Jim Lee’s overwhelming, insanely detailed work on Wildcats. Perhaps the proceedings here could’ve been even grittier, but in the end it all works quite well together.
RATING: 4/5

I was never in one of those honest, classic food fights in my entire scholastic career. But every time a scrum broke out in the lunch room, I hoped desperately that it would turn into a massive hurling of all things edible: fries, fruit punch, mashed potatoes, processed turkey sandwiches, Lunchable packages. But alas, it never happened.
But as I sit here, admiring and lamenting the 10 or so extra pounds I’ve accumulated in the past few months, I’ve come up with a power that combines my wish for a better genetic metabolism rate and my wish to be a food fight mercenary. Call me: the Metabolizer.
A hero with such digestive fortitude that any food eaten is partially processed for energy needs (the bare minimum to maintain the status quo) and the remainder that doesn’t become waste is turned into pure energy to be shot from my appendages or mouth. That’s right: an oatmeal cream pie, for all its uselessness and empty calories, could be instantly turned into a fireball.
Processing rate: no more than three seconds. So if I happen to witness a bank robbery in process or see a young woman being mugged in an alley, I can pull from the reserves I keep in my pocket (granola bars, for example) and get to work fighting crime. The denser the calorie content of the food item, the more effective it will be in harnessing power. But it also can’t be something that takes a while to eat because no fireball can be creating while the chewing’s taking place. So while a Snickers bar is packed with fat and calories, it’s useless because of the damn caramel.
These days, convenient, quick foods are everywhere. As is evil. So what better than a powerful metabolic strength with our marketing-enabled and engrained desire to constantly be stuffing our mouths?

As I was standing in line to vote this morning (shame on you if you didn't vote) I started to think about my favorite political comics and if they influenced my voting/political views or if my voting/political views influenced my favorite political comics. Did Marvel's Civil War propoganda fuel my distaste for the Iraq War or did I ust like the stories? Well, I don't know the answers to these questions, but I will give you a list of some of my favorite political comic trade paperbacks:
Cerebus: High Society (Political satire at its best, mixed with Marx Brothers humor.)
Cerebus: Church and State vol. 1, 2 (Separation of church and state, very smart, very funny.)
Transmetropolitan Vol. 3-8 (Hunter Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail crossed with Blade Runner.)
Eagle Vol. 1-17 (Read them all, it's the story of the first Asian-American president.)
V for Vendetta (Very relevant in today's world.)
President Lex (Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor as president.)
Ex Machina (A 9/11 Hero-turned-mayor copes with political hot button and his own superpowers.)
9/11 Report (A comic adaptation of the 9/11 commission report.)
Pride of Baghdad [Editor's Note: I told Thomas to put this one on there. It's great, and it doesn't really give any easy answers. It's a good allegory in the sense that it doesn't equate anything with a definitive moral stance.]
In the Shadow of no Towers (Amazing format, great story of patriotism and 9/11 by Pulitzer winner Art Spiegelman.)
Fax From Sarajevo (The story of the war told through the accounts of a family who sent them out on a fax machine.)
Palestine (A first person story of a Journalist in occupied territories, an excellent read.)

Yes, Dungeons and Dragons Game Day 2006 went off without a hitch! We had several full D&D games run, introduced some people to D&D, and had a good turnout for our D&D Miniatures Blood Wars Release Tournament. It ended up being a fun day for everyone, and we had several door prizes to give out. Here are the winners:
Wayne Turner won a Dice Set
Vincent Saponaro won the Pound of Dice
Jonathon Stiles won the Dungeon Master's Guide
Michael Kupper won the Player's Handbook
James Braun won the Eberron Campaign Setting
Jeremy McCollum won the Dungeon Tiles
Philip Starr won the D&D Player's Kit
Thanks to everyone who came out to make this event a success! That isn't all Fanboy Comics wants to do for RPGs, though. We're also looking for GMs to run games in our game room--any RPG, not just D&D. Contact us at fanboycomics@bellsouth.net and we'll work something out. Also we have an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons Eberron RPGA game going on in the game room every Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
Characters created for an RPGA campaign are recorded and kept track of by Wizards of the Coast, and can be used in any RPGA event!
Well, the World of Warcraft TCG has already sold out. We will be getting very limited quantities of restock on November 22nd. To ensure you get some when we get it back in, pre-order a $95.00 box now! Half down is due at the time of pre-order, but considering how fast the first wave sold out, you definitely should make sure you get in on this early.
COMING IN LATE NOVEMBER: Onyxia's Lair Raid Deck
This Raid Deck provides a new form of TCG multiplayer gameplay, where players form a raid party to try to defeat the deckmaster's ultra-powerful deck! One player gets to play as the mighty dragon Onyxia, and can even combine multiple raid decks together to create even more challenge. There are even special LOOT™ cards in this deck, so you can give your orc a dapper chapeau, or something!
Local artist and friend of Fanboy Comics Tom Fleming has done art for five cards from the World of Warcraft Heroes of Azeroth set: Chromatic Cloak, Hide of the Wild, Hand of Edward the Odd, Hammer of the Grand Crusader, and Into the Maw of Madness. Tom will be at Fanboy for a signing of his cards on December 9th.

Absolute DC: The New Frontier
$75.00
With Christmas just around the corner (and apparently with discussion of it no longer restricted to after Thanksgiving) it's time to start thinking about getting some gifts for that comic fan in your life. This week, we've got a new release that should satisfy any DC Comics Fanatic, Absolute DC: The New Frontier. Darwyn Cooke's magnificent take on the silver age of comics features the landmark characters of the DC Universe and provides interesting takes on them in a 1950s ruled by suspicion and paranoia. Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash all play key roles with classic looks at the characters that still have Cooke's unique creative touch. The art also hearkens back to the silver age, but retains Cooke's distinctive visual style.
Of course, if the DC fan you have in mind already has New Frontier, this Absolute Edition still makes a great gift. Like all the Absolute Editions published by DC, this deluxe hardcover features a slipcover and huge, full-color pages to provide detail that makes reading the Absolute Edition a whole new experience even if you've already read the comics. Adding to that new experience are new pages cut from the previous editions, rare promotional art, annotations, and more. This is a great item for any DC Comics fan.
The Tick Classic Pose T-Shirt and Insect Logo T-Shirt
M-XL: $19.95
XXL: $21.95
I used to have to write a lot of meaningless words about these shirts so the layout didn't look messed up on this newsletter. Fortunately, during my work on the New Fanboy Website, I have learned of the css clear property. So now, the page style looks good without a lot of boring old text, as if you can't see the t-shirt right there in the image. I mean, yes, a Tick t-shirt is a cool thing to own, certainly. I just have to wonder what I can add to make your purchasing decision easier.
Batman: Dark Victory Series 1 Action Figures
Click Image for a Larger View
Penguin and Robin 2-Pack: $21.99
All Others: $19.99
These action figure are based on Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's acclaimed Dark Victory series, which retells the meeting of Batman and Robin. Based on Sale's distinctive visual style, this series features Batman, Commissioner Gordon, the Scarecrow, and a two-pack with Robin and the Penguin. These figures are nice, but the series is definitely one of Jeph Loeb's finer pieces of writing, and you can pick up the trade for $19.99 here in the store. Yes, that is a pretty shameless plug, but it is a really good book.
Tales From the Clerks TP
$29.95
I guess this is a collection of all the Clerks comics that came out. I'm not entirely sure what this entails, but it definitely means you should buy it if you are a fan of Kevin Smith's beard. Yeah, checking Amazon, they say, "Collects the contents from the Clerks, Chasing Dogma and Bluntman & Chronic books together with one new story and a 15-page, never before reprinted story." Sounds like a nice collection.
The Complete Metal Gear Solid HC Collection
$55.00
This collection has the entire series based on the popular video game, illustrated by Ashley Wood and written by Kris Oprisko. However, it isn't just a simple retread of the comics, (and even if it were, the Ash Wood art would still be worth it) but presents a new, interesting take on the events. The collection also includes bonus artwork and a cover gallery, so if you like Ashley Wood's art, (and I do) this is definitely a great sampling of his style.
Marvel Zombies HC New Printing
$19.99
This new printing of the popular Marvel Zombies miniseries features a new Arthur Suydam cover based on Amazing Spider-Man #316. It also features an awesome, entertaining storyline that any fan of both Zombies and Marvel Comics should enjoy. It's also a refreshing breath of air to see at least something new happening in one of the five hundred zombie comics that have been released since Walking Dead became a hit. You know, as opposed to Marvel's new Zombie book, which is just another shallow Zombie retread. WE GET IT, COMIC BOOK COMPANIES. ZOMBIES. YES, WE UNDERSTAND.
Eldar Codex
$20.00
Eldar Battleforce
$90.00
Games Workshop is rolling out their new Eldar Models and rules this week! Get your new codex, which changes some of the rules, and also get the battleforce box, which is continuing in Games Workshop's new paradigm of actually making them good deals! It has eight Eldar Guardians, five Dire Avengers, one Wave Serpent, one War Walker and a Guardian Heavy Weapons Platform with two crew, which are together over $115.00, making this deal an almost 25% savings! This is a great way to get started with Eldar, if you're looking to get into Warhammer 40K.
We're primarily looking for pre-1977 superhero comics, old roleplaying games, used Trade Paperbacks, and old records--45'sn and 33 1/3's, yes, but mainly 78's, including Jazz, Blues, prewar Country, and Classic Rock. If you have any of this stuff you're looking to get rid of, come by Fanboy and let us look at it! We pay cash and store credit. Call for an appointment.

This week, we acquired a large collection of more modern issues that you may have missed. Many of these are difficult to find, so be sure to get in and check them out to fill the holes in your collection! We also still have several Silver Age books we acquired last week, including some very rare early issues of some of the bigger heroes--a good start for anyone looking to get into serious collecting, or even those already into it.

You can also check out some great comic sets and used trade paperbacks in Fanboy's Clearance Boxes. That's right, we are ALL UP IN this internet thing. We are on Ebay, hooking up with folks on Myspace, and we've even got our own website over at www.fanboycomics.biz. Hooray for cyberspace, and hooray for Dr. Doom surfing it on a surfboard.
As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.
