And now, as a service to the community: The Editor Reviews a Free Comic Book Day Title Based Entirely On the Cover, Diamond's Summary, and Whatever is Wikipedia's Featured Article of the Day!

This Week: Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse and Ziaur Rahman:

Diamond's Summary: 2006 Eisner Award Hall of Fame honoree Floyd Gottfredson brings you the Mikey Mouse you love: a two0fisted scrapper in a jaw-dropping epic! "The Robin Hood Adventure" takes our hero to Medieval times, where he must prove himself a warrior -- swordfighting, jousting, and risking his life to rob the rich! And then there's that little matter of marriage to one of Minnie's ancestors... ods bodkins!

GOOD OLD MICKEY MOUSE, WHAT ADVENTURES WILL YOU GET INTO NEXT?Sure, the cover shows Mickey Mouse hanging out with Robin Hood, but did you know that this so-called "Robin Hood" is actually an ever-present force that fights for social justice and is continuously reborn? Robin Hood is just one of many in a line of linked spirits, just like Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman. In fact, this issue reveals that it was none other than Mickey Mouse himself who helped guide the course of this ever-present force. In this free comic book, he even explicity outlines what would later become the Indemnity Act that in turn was used to justify the coup that brought Ziaur Rahman to power. Some consider this book to be too political for a company like Disney, but then there's that little matter of marriage to one of Minnie's ancestors... ods bodkins!

coming soon - arthur suydam's murder dispenserFrank Frazetta's Death Dealer #1

As far as I know, this is the first comic book based on a painting. Hopefully, this will catch on, and we'll see some more comics based on paintings. I'm hoping for Van Gogh's Starry Night, the story of a fighting spaceman who lived in a clock tower in whatever time period it was that Van Gogh was alive in wherever it was he lived. Belgium, maybe. Grant Morrison writing Pablo Picasso's The Blue Period would be pretty cool, too, I think.

i'm pretty sure that thomas wants me to just snap and kill joss whedon one of these daysBuffy the Vampire Slayer #2

Are you a fan of Buffy? Have you watched every single episode of the series? Well, congratulations. You're a member of the elite group of people who are the only ones who could understand what the hell is going on in this book. I certainly had no idea what was going on. As far as I knew, Buffy fought vampires. I guess something happened, and now everything's different. I don't know what that was, though, since Joss Whedon's writing has apparently evolved beyond petty mortal concerns like "exposition."

DAN SLOTT'S BIG BREAKAvengers: The Initiative #1

The main title spinning out of Civil War, this could be the book that brings writer Dan Slott to the "big time," as it were. As if being named Jackson's best writer of the year wasn't enough. Anyway, this features, uh...Yellowjacket, War Machine, the Gauntlet (?) and Justice (?!) training superheroes who are somehow even less known than they are. If you can't get excited by that, then you've got ice water in your veins. That means you're dead. Because blood is required to keep you alive.

this is just like the episode of frasier where he had to go through the stages of grief over losing his job and everyone stopped watching because for gods sake give him his job back this has gone on long enough and isn't funny anymoreFallen Son - The Death of Captain America: Wolverine

This five-issue limited series is based on the five stages of grief, and how different characters deal with Captain America's death. Wolverine represents denial, because he sells a lot of books. Uh, I mean something to do with his behavior in the past and it makes sense. Maybe he denied the Holocaust in Uncanny X-Men #302 or something. I don't know. There was the one issue where he used an ethnic slur to describe Sabretooth.

JOSS WHEDON'S BRILLIANT IDEA TO BRING THE RUNAWAYS TO NEW YORK (which was I guess the second arc of the book)Runaways #25

Joss Whedon writes the Runaways! GREAT! THERE IS NO SARCASM IN MY VOICE WHEN I SAY THAT I AM GLAD TO HAVE JOSS WHEDON WRITING ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS. I CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS! I CERTAINLY AM NOT ON RECORD AS HAVING A DISLIKE FOR JOSS WHEDON, AND EVEN IF I WERE, I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT LET THAT TAINT MY PERCEPTION OF THIS BOOK. HOORAY FOR JOSS WHEDON.

the epic story of an awesome marketing successThe Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #3

What can be said about this book that wasn't already said the other two times I wrote it up? I don't know. I guess I've already mentioned the spectacular art and sharp writing. I don't think that I've mentioned that Peter David is fat, though. He also has a moustache. Now, I know the saying about glass houses and everything, but still, you have to consider that he is also bald. At least I have the self-respect to not be bald. I mean, really.

The Comic Order Will Not Be Delayed by Easter

Just thought y'all should know.

The New Warhammer 40K League Begins April 16th!

I haven't finished the flyer yet, but you'll have to trust me on this, even without a flyer.  It's going to run like most of our leagues: play eight games in eight weeks, best record gets a battalion box.  All armies have to be 1850 points, and all army lists have to be approved by a judge and your opponent.  So good luck!  We will have a flyer soon.

Space Marine Devastator Squad
games workshop releases something to make building an army cheaper?? what the heck?!$35.00

This boxed set contains enough plastic components to create four (4) Devastator Marines and a Devastator Sergeant. Included are eight (8) heavy weapons; one (1) Missile Launcher, one (1) Multi-melta, two (2) Heavy Bolters, two (2) Las-cannons and two (2) Plasma Cannons.

That should be all you need to know to convince you to buy this.  Finally, Devastator Squads are economically feasible.

Absolute Batman: The Long Halloween

Oh, Tim Sale, what is it about you that make Jeph Loeb produce the best work of his career? Any Loeb-Sale collaboration is pretty much guaranteed to be good, while pretty much anything else Jeph Loeb writes is hit or miss. Who can know what this mystical force is? My guess is that Tim Sale just rewrites all of Loeb's scripts and doesn't tell him. Anyway, whatever the case, one of Loeb's finest works is on display in an awesome Absolute Edition. Not to mention a ton of extras, including sketches, interviews, and a four-page sequence originally cut from the story! Damn you, Absolute Editions, for making me really want to buy a story that I already own.

Exalted: The Manuals of Exalted Power Book 2: The Lunars
TEEN WOLF TOO$31.99

Thanks, White Wolf, for these obscenely long titles to your Exalted supplements.  Still, this Lunar book looks to be very helpful, especially considering how terrible the previous Lunar book was.  Well, I never actually read it--I heard it was terrible and didn't buy it.  This one is probably not terrible, though!  Here's what White Wolf has to say about it on their site:

  • Details of the Creation-spanning Silver Pact, its goals and its factions
  • Everything players and Storytellers need to generate Lunar Exalted characters, including their Charms and shapeshifting Knack
  • Rules for the chimerae, mad Lunars whose minds and bodies have been twisted by the Wyld
Thanks, White Wolf's website!
Cross Bronx TP
I'LL CROSS YOUR BRONX YOU SON OF A$14.99

Michael Avon Oeming is the man.  His artwork has its own awesome style that is unique and moody and makes great use of shadows.  His writing is top-notch--Thor Disassembled is amazing, and his Ares miniseries made Ares the baddest ass who ever badded an ass.  So what do you get when you put his artistic and writing talent to a supernatural cop drama?  The answer is one of the best miniseries to come out last year.  You can't go wrong picking this one up, with a great story, great characterization and great art.  Seriously, this comic definitely deserves your support.

Axis and Allies: War at Sea
BOAT WARBoosters: $14.99
Starters: $24.99

Who doesn't love boats? I guess aquaphobes and people who get seasick. Still, even they can enjoy this new miniatures game from the Axis and Allies line, that supplies high seas World War II action! Each booster comes with 5 prepainted miniatures, and the game has a fairly elegant rules set, according to the dudes who were playing it in the back the other day. Also, the turns are somewhat simultaneous, so no waiting while your opponent moves all of his forces and shoots! This game seems to be pretty popular at the moment, so be sure to check it out before we sell out!

Ultimate Spider-Man: Clone Saga Premiere HC
brian michael bendis has huge uh... chutzpah$29.99

If you're like me, you always thought that Ultimate Spider-Man was pretty good, but largely just imitated the more popular arcs from Spider-Man's history with largely cosmetic changes.  Well, this is where that all changes, and it's excellent.  Ultimate Spidey's status quo is shaken to the core by the momentous events in this series, which features revelations, surprises, and a good deal of Ultimate Nick Fury.  Peter's relationship with Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. is brought to the forefront here, and it's always been one of the most interesting and unique aspects of the Ultimate series.  The only problem that I have is the release of this series in premiere HC, when none of the other arcs have been released in that format.  Still, for those who don't have a bookshelf of Ultimate Spidey trades, this is a good buy and a good place to get into the series.

We Buy Used Records - 78's, 45's, and 33's!

For those of you too young to remember, a record is what old people used to record their music on when it turned out wax cylinders were highly toxic and also part of Thomas Edison's plan to use subliminal suggestions on the populace as part of a scheme to put the Illuminati into power.  Anyway, the 78's are 10 inches wide, the 45's are 7 inches and the 33's are 12 inches wide.  Why they couldn't have just called them 10's, 7's and 12's, I'll never know, because I'm not willing to do the research.  Also, if anyone over the age of 30 tries to tell me, I will put my hands over my ears and scream as loud as I can.  Which is what I usually do when someone over the age of 30 tries to talk to me, anyway.

Oh, we also buy Used Trade Paperbacks, Used Roleplaying Games, Silver and Golden Age Comics (Stuff Published Before 1977), Old Pulps, and Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering Cards are all things that we buy! If you figure out the answer and want to sell us some of that stuff, call us at (910) 452-7828 and make an appointment!

But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

A NEW GENERATION OF HEROES

man affirmative action is just going too far

Fantastic Four #544

Writer: Dwayne McDuffie
Penciler: Paul Pelletier
Inker: Rick Magyar
Colorist: Paul Mounts
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

At this rate, Marvel's Civil War may never end. It'll just morph every few months into another mega-event or crossover mess. After "the Initiative," we may get "the Big Deal," "the Mutant Coven," "Total Destruction M," and "the Biggest Event to Ever Shake the Foundations of the Marvel Universe Forever, in its Entirety." It's all a never-ending cycle, really, a process of marketing schemes, unwarranted hype and a legion of suckers. That's us, by the way.

Now, I'm not all cynic; sometimes, these stories are good. Case in point: Dwayne McDuffie's third issue on the long-running Fantastic Four series, here dubbed "The New Fantastic Four." How new? Try 50% new. Reed and Sue Richards have left the team and have been replaced by newlyweds King T'Challa, the Black Panther, and Ororo "Storm" Monroe.

Let's pause for a quick rant. Has anybody else been royally irked by the MU's overwhelmingly flippant response to Civil War? Aside from the death of Captain America, I haven't seen the events of that series regarded with a sincere level of gravity. (A step toward that occurs in Civil War: The Confession.) Reed and Sue split over that conflict, but now they're back together, heading off on a second honeymoon. Reed makes a four-second apology for his role in the whole thing, making a mole hill of his development of the clone Thor and subsequent murder of Goliath. Would that be considered second-degree murder with a deadly biomechanical technology? I wish Civil War mattered more as an individual event and crisis, rather than the impotent set-up for "the Initiative" that it's revealed to have been. Civil War doesn't have to be House of M. Rant over.

This new Fantastic Four, and #544 in particular, really gets back to what makes this title great. An emphasis on action-cosmic action. There's early intrigue (Black Panther dealing with the aftermath of the destruction of New York's Wakandan embassy), but it isn't long before the introductory press conference, the T'Challa brood moving-in to the Baxter Building, and the return of Deathlok (sort of). A dead C-lister, Gravity, looks to be returning in one form or another down the road.

Once the new Four get into space, things really cook. Kirby-cook. Uatu the Watcher is back (if a wee bit out of character), accompanied by writing and art that's over the top in a fun, nostalgic way. McDuffie makes you believe his story can go anywhere, and the penciling effort by Paul Pelletier admirably keeps pace. The ink and color team of Rick Magyar and Paul Mounts, respectively, ground the art in subdued hues and adolescent edginess. Humor has its place here, if occasionally misplaced, but the overall effect is a story that emphasizes the fun of this title and characters' legacy. Black Panther and Storm bring along a level of maturity and deeper relational theme which replaces the Richards married couple with the intriguing notion of a newlywed couple that may eventually reveal exactly when the honeymoon period ends. This team change adds much more than it removes, which is a great thing for these characters and the series.

This issue ends with the Silver Surfer, well, because it has got to be required. (The movie is on its way people. This is a business first, right? I really hate being so cynical.) With the appearance of that character and the rest of this issue's cast, McDuffie promises to take the Four to narrative places both familiar and new.

The Secret History Book 1

Writer: Jean-Pierre Pécau
Artist: Igor Kordey
Colorist: Carole Beau
Publisher: Archaia Studios Press
Price: $5.95

Archaia Studios Press has been responsible for releasing upon the LCS some fantastic foreign import books (The Killer) and impressive domestic series (Mouse Guard). I couldn't uncover if The Secret History-an expansive, multi-volume series recounting major historical events with a mystic, supernatural twist-is in fact a foreign title (Archaia Studios website doesn't even list the book, but I'm not much for Internet boondoggling), but with names like Jean-Pierre, Igor and Carole, and a translator along for the ride, the creative team is definitely from across the pond.

This first book in the full series of seven, Genesis, sets the story in Ancient Egypt, 1350 B.C.E., with the enslavement of the Hebrew people. The story actually starts back in 3000 B.C.E., with four moody-cute younglings who are gifted with four mystical tiles. From that point on, the four harness incredible powers. Like the Ghostbusters, however, the four are instructed by their benefactor to never cross the streams-I mean, never use their powers in conjunction.

Then, in an inexplicable ignorance of logic and time, the four are now involved in all the Egyptian intrigue, but only look a few years older (but no less sexy). The Pharaoh is being attacked by Moses and his people, and the plagues are used in a somewhat different (and more violent) fashion than they were by Mr. Heston.

The four mortal teens are made somewhat immortal, and have been gifted with the power of gods. They form their own illuminati, and in future books, their roles will be revealed in major events throughout world history: the search for the Holy Grail, Napolean's march across Europe and World War I, just to name a few. The premise may seem a bit exhausted, and unfortunately the execution in storytelling doesn't do much to improve the experience. This book was translated (from French) and something must've been lost in transition. We're not treated to much explanation, and some expository narration would've been very welcomed.

It's good to see a revisionist take on these familiar stories and characters, but the four main characters aren't explored much for their motivations (they're pitted against each other, but they used to be close friends, I guess). What are their goals? What is their sphere of influence? What are their motivations? There are just too many questions left unanswered to move this book to anything more than a curious diversion.

The art in the book is very dark and small panels receive an unfortunate, forced density. The Egyptian characters look very similar, which makes following the story that more difficult. Illustrator Igor Kordey also gives us a black Moses. The intrigue looks good, the battles are fierce, but the amount of time spent on the quiet moments keeps things moving painfully slow.

This series aims for epic scale, but neglects complete, vivid storytelling in favor of splashy What-Ifs. That alone just isn't enough.

WELCOME TO VAMPIRE WEEK AT FANBOY COMICS I GUESS

Virulents (One-Shot)

Writer: Shamik Dasgupta
Artist: Dean Ruben Hyrapiet
Colorist: Parag R. Godse
Publisher: Virgin Comics
Price: $4.99

Sir Richard Branson-what'll he think of next? Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Cola, Virgin Megastore, Virgin Galactic and now Virgin Comics. (New Age guru Deepak Chopra was also in on this one.) It may seem from the outset that Branson is just trying to break into the comic game in an effort for further global domination, but if that's the case, nobody told him that he'd have better luck starting a record label. Virgin Comics, still in its infancy, has done some impressive work by bringing over some great talents: Guy Ritchie, Andy Diggle, John Woo, Mike Carey, Garth Ennis and more. A major goal of new label is to bring Indian-culture related titles to a wider audience. This should do much better than Spider-Man: India.

One of Virgin's recent releases, the short graphic story Virulents, manages to take advantage of currents events (continued battling in Afghanistan) while bringing an Indian legend to a wider audience. And what better way to do that than with a graphic, expletive-laden horror story set in a war zone?

"What's the one thing worse than terrorists? Vampire terrorists?" If that's not a B-movie tagline, than I know less than nothing. I'm glad that line wasn't put on the cover of the book, because it would've seemed too exploitative (which it is in any case). US troops are teamed up with Arab and Indian soldiers as they search the desert for a missing platoon and a cache of nuclear weapons that have found their way into the hands of terrorists. These same terrorists have summoned an ancient evil for use on their enemies-a vampire-zombie curse.

What follows is a lot of screaming, shooting, biting, in-fighting, heroic acts, bloodletting and explosions. Shamik Dasgupta's story is filled with those familiar super-war-action soldier stereotypes-some wear turbans and others have shaved heads. The narrative doesn't try to make more of itself than what is on the surface: a midnight monster flick-but a fun one. The vampires are given a unique look, and the blood flows. Dean Ruben Hyrapiet's art sometimes suffers from a serious lack of lighting (similar complaints for Image's zombie-Vietnam one-shot, '68). There isn't much inventiveness to the layout; panels are cramped and angles shift don't very often. The art slows the story down considerably, when it should run full-charge. While the art regularly comes across as amateurish and uninspired, Hyrapiet still handles the unworldly combat quite well.

As much as a appreciate that Virgin Comics is giving an international voice to creators who might not have had the opportunity otherwise, I don't understand the advertisement on the back cover. It is a simple layout with a web address as the focus: www.letvafly.com. That "VA" is for Virgin Atlantic. Is this the first airline ad in a comic book? Is the goal to get more comic book readers to fly with Virgin? Who knows, but the sizable Branson-Virgin fortune means that the book is virtually ad-free, and there are no third-party ads. As far as I can tell, Virgin is doing right.

tristan makes a good point when he says that the vampire genre is unoriginal when compared to the zombie genre. well, i'm off to read one of the estimated three million identical zombie comics coming out this week

Half Dead TP

Writers: Barb Lien-Cooper & Park Cooper
Penciler: Jimmy Bott
Inker: Jimmy Bott
Colorist: Wesley Wong & Dean Welsh
Publisher: Marvel/Dabel brothers
Price: $10.99

I think I'm going to take this chance to officially declare my stance on vampires: I'm sick of them. I think the vampire genre has literally been sucked dry (Zing!) of originality. Seriously, the "vampire story with a twist" has been so overdone, that I think the only truly original course of action these days is to just not make vampire stories at all, but instead make zombie stories, which, according to a study I conducted myself, are about seventy-three times cooler than vampire stories. I conducted this study by watching "Dawn of the Dead" (the new one) and "Queen of the Damned" back to back. The number "73" is derived from the number of things on a list I made of "Horrible Things I Would Rather Do To Myself Than Watch 'Queen of the Damned' Again." "Give myself a vasectomy with a broken beer bottle" is number twenty-eight. But, fear not Dabel fans, I'm not going to take out my petty prejudices out on an otherwise good book.

Half Dead takes place in London. A group of vampire (called Half Deads) terrorists are using biological warfare to convert ordinary humans into Half Deads. The protagonist is one such victim. Romany, a ballerina, is exposed to an airborne virus while riding home on the subway. She is then captured by PASA (the Bureau of ParaHuman and Supernatural Affairs). I'll let that horribly shameless rip-off of Hellboy slide, but Dark Horse's lawyers may not. PASA is a government organization charged with fighting the Half Dead. They train her in combat and send her on several vampire-hunting missions with a former PASA agent (who has also been infected with the virus). Through events in the story, the two sides frequently become intertwined, and by the end, it's hard to tell who the goods guys are.

Overall, the plot's not bad. Sure, a lot of the vampire themes are overdone and seem cliché, but there's a lot of very original stuff here. They take several existing themes and twist them all together to create what may very well be the most original vampire story in several years. My only real complaint with the writing is the pacing. The book is only composed of five chapters (roughly equivalent to five issues). There's so much going on here that it feels like they're rushing you along, especially near the end. It seems like they dragged out the first couple chapters, but then decided that they were running out of space, which leaves little time for minor literary nuances such as resolution. But hey, that's not important, right?

The art is pretty nice too. There's such a precise attention to detail, that you could ascertain half the story by just looking at the facial expressions. But most importantly, it passes the "Beer Bottle Vasectomy" litmus test. Overall, it's not a bad read at all. For vampire and Dabel Bros. Fans alike, it's a must have. Not a bad read for everyone else either. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Romany is given a dagger that turns vampires into dust when you stabbed with it, which may not sound like such a big deal, but it's as close as "Prince of Persia" will ever come to having his own comic. Awesome. Damn, now I really want to go play Prince of Persia, but instead I have to go to work. Thanks a lot, Marvel. -Reviewer Tristan Hoagland is a half-mad genius who has fused his own brain with a black hole from another dimension.

the best part is when the government decides to destroy reed richards for helping black panther

Black Panther #26

Writer: Reginald Hudlin
Penciler: Francis Portela
Inker: Victor Olazaba
Colorist: Val Staples
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $2.99

On the surface, Black Panther #26 appears to be significant for one reason: the New Fantastic Four. For those of you who live under a rock, or those who understandably missed out on Fantastic Four #543 a few weeks ago because it was put on the back burner due to massive reaction to Captain America #25, I'll fill you in. Due to the marital problems they've been having throughout Civil War, Reed and Sue decide to take a leave of absence from the Fantastic Four. Black Panther and Storm joined in their place. While the new team was only revealed on the last page of FF #543, it picks up this weeks in FF #544 and BP #26.

There are actually three events of significance occurring in this issue of Black Panther. I've already discussed the obvious one above. Recently, the Wakandan embassy was destroyed, and SHIELD and the U.S. Government are clearly conspiring against the Black Panther, which he is well aware of. What he's not aware of is that while he's dodging the the powers that be in America, American aircraft carriers are poised right outside of Wakanda, ready for attack. Thirdly, the negative-zone prison is invaded by space insects. That's really all I'm going to say about that one.

While all of this may seem important, nothing of any real importance happens in this issue. It's like the calm before the storm. It just sets everything up to happen in the next issue, which will most likely be huge. It's also kind of awkward pairing T'Challa and Storm with The Torch and The Thing. You're basically pairing the two goofiest Marvel characters with the two most uptight characters. But hey, I never get tired of watching cliché personalities collide. Maybe that's why I just sit around and watch reruns of sitcoms from the 80s. Oh, wait.

Portella does a great job with the art. He does an excellent job putting buildings and vehicles into perspective, giving the comics a great sense of scale. Ultimately, the production values of this book are excellent, the problem is that it just doesn't go anywhere. Anybody who reads Black Panther, or is collecting the Initiative books will have already picked this up, and will probably enjoy it. If you're looking for an issue about the reformation of the Fantastic Four, your best bet is to pick up FF #544 instead, as it has a more hands-on approach. Comic investors will also be interested in this issue, as it's (to the best of my knowledge) the first comic to feature a parody of the O'Reilly Factor. So go out and buy it before the price spikes when it's revealed in Captain America #26 that it was actually FOX News behind his assassination! Yeah, how do you like that Wizard? I totally beat you the punch on that one. -Reviewer Tristan Hoagland has never been associated with the Nation of Islam or the Black Panther movement, and almost certainly never performed assassinations of key political figures to advance those groups' interests.  WINK.

Editor's Notes

Sorry, I had to devote the time I usually use for writing these notes to working on a flyer for the horrific crucible known as "Free Comic Book Day."  THOMAS PLEASE DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENCE  Also, I goofed off a lot, but don't mention that to Thomas.

Anyway, I thought you might like to see the version of the flyer I have now.  It is a work in progress!
