I really hope this leads to a booster gold/animal man team-up book
52 Week 52

It's finally coming to an end. The series that has pretty much consistently been one of the best books to come out each week with no delays ends this week. See what writers Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and Grant Morrison have in store for the conclusion of their epic that made a story about Booster Gold, Animal Man, Steel, The Question, Elongated Man and Black Adam one of the must-read books over the past year. This is it! The Secret of 52 Revealed! The Year Without Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman ends! And next week, the Countdown begins!

World War Hulk Prologue: World Breaker

Incredible Hulk #106

Did you read the awesome Planet Hulk story arc going through the Incredible Hulk? If you have, congratulations! You are a discerning individual of character and taste! If not, then I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, provided that you pick up World War Hulk. If you haven't already read the preview--well, check out the bottom of this page. It is pretty much awesome. Thanks to the magic of preview copies, I have already read both of this week's issues. The Prologue is an excellent set-up for the smashing to come, and it even includes a Mini-Marvels backup story about the Illuminati's decision to launch Hulk into space that is actually really hilarious. Incredible Hulk #106 actually has very little Hulk, but fear not! It's a sharply-written tale about Amadeus Cho (a boy prodigy who befriended Hulk before the whole Planet Hulk deal) trying to round up heroes to support the Hulk when he comes back, starting with Jennifer Walters--the She-Hulk! Also, the scale of this event shouldn't be as overwhelming as Civil War, and it might even come out on time!

what sort of a name is fenimore anywayMarvel Illustrated: The Last of the Mohicans #1

To quote Mark Twain:

"Cooper's art has some defects. In one place in 'Deerslayer,' and in the restricted space of two-thirds of a page, Cooper has scored 114 offenses against literary art out of a possible 115. It breaks the record.

"There are nineteen rules governing literary art in domain of romantic fiction -- some say twenty-two. In 'Deerslayer,' Cooper violated eighteen of them."

Fortunately, there are a lot of pretty pictures in this comic so it doesn't matter how terrible of a writer Cooper is! Instead of slogging through his inept prose, you just get the story and the dialogue! Hooray for comic books!

The Fanboy Spotlight
52 Action Figures
no, there aren't 52 of the action figures, they're based on the comic 52! ha ha ha what a hilarious misunderstanding that I imagined in my head$19.99 Each

The heroes of 52 have action figures!  Booster Gold!  Animal Man!  Supernova!  Isis!  Batwoman!  I personally think all of these characters are awesome.  Especially Animal Man.  The dude kind of gains animal powers from some sort of Platonic ideal of an animal or something.  It's confusing, and involves morphogenic fields or something Grant Morrison came up while he was on the cocktail of drugs and hallucinogens that he's pretty much replaced his blood with at this point.  What was I talking about?  Who cares, 52 is awesome.

Civil War: Captain America TP
this doesn't include the issue where he dies, but is awesome nonetheless$11.99

Ed Brubaker's Captain America is one of the best superhero comics being put out by any company.  Here's the blurb:

Captain America has fallen into a clash with his government and his friends, and the people close to him are paying the price. The life of Cap's girlfriend, Agent 13, is torn apart as her superiors use her divided loyalties against her. Elsewhere, a new villain emerges; the Red Skull begins to make himself known; and the Winter Soldier again comes face-to-face with Cap. But which side will he choose? Plus: James Buchanan Barnes, Captain America's one-time partner Bucky, faces his first Christmas of the 21st century - and the truth of the terrible things he was forced to do as the Winter Soldier. And with Cap caught in a conflict he can neither take a side of - or understand - what moves can he make to try to redeem himself?!

Seriously.  The best.

Mage: The Awakening - The Free Council
to everyone who prefers the old mage - the matrix sucks, get over it$26.99

"Oppenheimer was no mage, but how can you say he wasn't a wizard? I'm sure he'd never seen any Watchtower or Atlantis god-king or any of your other old myths. But he conjured up something the world had never seen before and changed this Earth forever. No mage had ever done what he did, but we consider ourselves the Awakened people. I'll bet you anything that when he saw the flash, he woke up, whether it was like us or not. Imagine what we can do when we see through the Lie and recognize that magic and science are all the same thing: wondrous." - Morton, Libertine Futurist

Man, read that quote and tell me this game isn't awesome.

Warhammer Black Orcs
WES GONNA MAKE IT ORKY$40.00

This boxed set contains enough plastic components to assemble twenty (20) Black Orcs with options for a Champion, Standard Bearer, and Musician. All models are supplied unpainted and require assembly.

My friends who play orcs inform me that this is a huge improvement over the previous situation.  Hooray for plastics!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY - Transformers: The Official Movie Prequel #1

Writers: Simon Furman & Chris Ryall
Artist: Don Figueroa
Colorist: Josh Burcham
Publisher: IDW Publishing

Intro story on the warring robots in advance of the impending summer blockbuster. Lots of laser action and evildoer grandstanding. The original robot designs have been replaced by the movie versions, which don't look as cool. But it's still fun. Don't expect an answer to the question: Which came first, robot mode or vehicle mode?

The web-slinger in a familiar situation: trying to do right by Aunt May on her birthday, Peter Parker gets caught up with a maniacal vehicular villain called Overdrive. Spider-Man movie fans will find likeable characterizations (especially with Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson) and loads of action. A fine, one-shot story.

Publisher: Oni Press

U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (CQ) is charged with investigating a puzzling murder at McMurdo Station (CQ) in Antarctica, where she works. FREE COMIC BOOK DAY - Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century #1

Writer: J. Torres
Artist: Chynna Clugston
Colorist: Guy Major
Publisher: DC Comics

Spinning out from the animated WB series, (CQ) teen heroes from the future time-warp back in time and grab Clark Kent before he matures too much, then yank him back to a treacherous future. Fourth wall-defying storytelling elevates this story above typical kiddie fare with fun villains (the Fatal Five!) and fast, good-time plotting.

RATING: 3.5/5

I like to imagine this is loosely based on my repeated submission to DC, 'amazons make out with each other.' maybe I should sue

Amazons Attack! #1

Writer: Will Pfeifer
Artist: Pete Woods
Colorist: Brad Anderson
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

The promise of a frivolously fun book by way of the alliterative title, the framed in-action cover art, and the 2008 promise of "The Fall of [Republican] Washington." (Note: the "republican" thing is my personal hope, thank you very much) [Editor's Note: Go back to Soviet Russia, Comrade Standalin.]-what's not to love? Spinning out from the pages of the Wonder Woman series, and with a healthy connection to the DCU's Infinite Crisis, Princess Diana of Themyscira's people-those extra fit and never butch Amazon ladies-have come to America to make the whole of man pay for imprisoning one of their own.

While I have less than a smidgen of familiarity with the Wonder Woman series, this book still satisfies tremendously. If you, fair reader, know intimately from where this ancillary title springs forth, then you may find yourself talking to these pages, saying things like "awesome" and then re-reading the story immediately after finishing. Amazons Attack! is that much fun.

Writer Will (Catwoman) Pfeifer's story opens with a father and sun admiring at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. (The day of the week isn't revealed, but the area around the monument and reflection pool is practically void of humanity-when the hell has that ever happened?) After a modicum of jingoistic sappiness, the whole of the Amazon army-complete with monocular beasts, a flying cavalry, and tons of foot soldiers-suddenly arrives, kills these two poor bastards, and soon all others will follow. They're heading all the way for the White House to get some accountability. Queen Hippolyta (WW's mother), being assisted by a manipulative sorceress, declares war on America (as it stands for the globe's reach of masculinity and perceived strength. The capital, and Lincoln Memorial, will both lose their heads by the end of this day.

There is just so much to dig about this book. Pfeifer's scripting aesthetic provides for speedy storytelling with the bare minimum of narrative intrusion. While this may mean that readers who haven't been following the Wonder Woman series may feel at a loss, there's enough here to bring you in without a introductory primer (although that perfunctory device, lately the cat's pajamas for Marvel Civil War tie in titles, would've been a nice touch). There's no time wasted; Batman's in on the fight by the end and Mr. President is saved by the hero Black Lightning. Political and national allegories are both lightly touched upon, just enough to give the story additional outside relevance and intrigue.

Let it also been known that penciler Pete Woods-who collaborates with Pfeifer on Catwoman-turns in stellar, top-notch work. The impending battle has such immense scale and scope. Pfeifer's keen sense of conspiracy and scheme is visually translated by Woods through forceful close-ups and deliberate eye movements. The Amazons as the feminine ideal of strength are portrayed cleanly and are mostly seen posing or grandstanding rather than in the heat of combat. That's surely to come in the series, but I really wanted to see them get down hardcore in this one. I guess I'll just have to stick around. It's not a tough sell.

RATING: 4.5/5

if we all followed aphorisms properly, the second stage of grief would be 'get even'

Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America - The Avengers

Writer: Jeph Loeb
Penciler: Ed McGuinness
Inker: Dexter Vines
Colorist: Jason Keith
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

The death of Captain America continues to unleash its ripple effects in part two of Jeph Loeb's Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America. As we all should know by now, this five-part series will deal with the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The first issue, illustrated by Leinil (New Avengers) Yu, dealt with Wolverine coming to finally believe that Steve Rogers was killed by a host of assassin's bullets. This issue takes a closer look at two Avengers teams-the Mighty (and more interesting) Avengers and the New Avengers-as they confront their hostilities and rage in wake of the big fatality.

Loeb offers two different storylines here: for Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers, she and her Mighty Avengers team are hunting down the villain Tiger Shark, who is using the "Horn of Gabriel" (stolen from Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner's Atlantis) to draw nasty beasties up from the ocean-why? Who knows, but the Mighty Avengers have already in their short life taken on some giant monsters. For the New Avengers, their story is somewhat more calm but no less treacherous-a team poker game.

The events of this book take place concurrently with the first Fallen Son book, meaning that Iron Man is off on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier dealing with Wolverine's intrusion. The New Avengers poker game is some kind of therapeutic exercise, some team building in the wake of a major blow. Everyone's emotionally roughed up, but the black-costumed Spider-Man is taking it the hardest. During the game, the team members question each other's allegiances and motivations, doubts all stemming from the lack of answers concerning the assassination. For the Mighty Avengers, their bloodlust in the fight is fueled by a need to assert their strength and authority against villains who are trying to up their stocks in the sudden void of assured heroism.

Loeb bounces from team to team at a steady and regular clip. There isn't much overlap, but neither story is more interesting than the other. There's a descent amount of anger-fueled infighting, especially when the now denial-free Wolverine shows up at the poker game and proceeds to get into a nasty spat with Spider-Man. While the Mighty Avengers' fight is enjoyable and action-filled, the anger and fermented hostilities are more palpable at the New Avengers' gaming table.

Again, a Fallen Son book manages to spin a tragedy into continued strong storytelling. Loeb does a fine job channeling personal loss into these characters, and they all react in expected and unexpected ways, always intriguing. Ed McGuinness' artwork here is nothing less than perfect, punctuated rightly by Dexter (Civil War) Vines' inks and Jason Keith's colors. The artwork evokes Frank Cho's work on the Mighty Avengers and glosses (then cleans) Leinil Yu's New Avengers efforts. Loeb's economy of words is further elucidated through the art, and the overall effort is exactly as it should be.

RATING: 4.5/5

I'm not sure but I think the Ooutsiders get AIDS in this issue. I haven't read the book, it's just an educated guess based on everything else Judd Winick has ever written.

Outsiders Annual #1

Writer: Judd Winick
Penciler: Scott McDaniel
Inker: Andy Owens
Colorist: Guy Major
Publisher: DC
Price: $3.99

Apparently DC is now using annuals to reveal what happened in that lost year after Infinite Crisis. I mean, I kind of thought that's what 52 was for, but what do I know? So, basically this annual tells what happen to the Outsiders after Infinite Crisis, which ended a year ago, which was also when One year Later started, which took place a year after Infinite Crisis. To put it simply, this book takes place a year ago, before the events of this last year, but it apparently ties into a new Outsiders/Checkmate crossover starting with the next issues of their respective series. Now that your mind is destroyed, and you're undoubtedly laying crumpled on the floor beneath your computer desk, frothing at the mouth, and bleeding from your fingernails, like "Patchy" from Lost (yeah, I really don't care what his real name is, so don't bother correcting me). Hey, don't blame me, it was DC that apparently sat down and said, "The progression of time in a linear fashion makes too much sense. How can we @#$% this up?" If I come off as bitter, it's only because I recently had the "pleasure" of trying to explain to a friend how World War III fit into the DC time line. Seriously, try that sometime, if you're up to the challenge. For bonus points, try explaining it without using any visual aids, it's damn near impossible.

The book itself isn't terrible, although it's not particularly good either. Like last week's Nightwing Annual, it addresses an unanswered question from the One Year Later jump. Unfortunately it doesn't have the depth or the entertainment value of last weeks offering. Specifically, it explains several things: how Black lightning escaped from jail, why they are widely believed to be dead, where Captain Boomerang came from, why Arsenal left, and how Metamorpho absorbed Shift. Sounds ambitious for a mere 48 page one-shot. Well, not-surprisingly, they all revolve around one event, namely the Outsiders plan an elaborate Ocean's Eleven-esque prison break, which of course goes awry, forcing them to improvise. Somehow, all the prisoners get loose, and regain their powers because of a "anti-power nullifier," or some nonsense like that. I'm not going to give away any of the ending, where they rapidly try to answer the five questions listed above. You'll just have to read it yourself if you're that interested.

The art isn't terrible, but it is a little cartoony. Not that cartoony is bad, but when you're trying to write about major events that are supposed to be dramatic and life-changing, it makes the book hard to take seriously. My biggest gripe with this book isn't its art, but its inaccessibility. Unless you're a consistent Outsiders reader, you'll find it incredibly difficult to understand anything in this book, or get excited about anything that happens. For someone like me, who has never read an issue of Outsiders, this annual is little more than a bunch of amateur superheroes breaking into a prison. However, fans of the Outsiders will be all over this, as it answers almost everything left to imagination in One Year Later, so it's a must have for them. Everyone else shouldn't bother, and if you're looking to get into the Outsiders, this isn't the place to start. You're better off just picking up a trade. -Reviewer Tristan Hoagland gets probably twenty comics each week, yet never seems to know anything about any of the titles we give him to review.  My guess is that he is a John-Nash-style schizophrenic and simply uses the comics to find the secret Commie messages hidden in them.
