Greetings To All Of Our New Readers!

Free Comic Book Day was a huge success! If you're one of the nearly four hundred new subscribers to this Newsletter, welcome! Hopefully you will enjoy this clever blend of entertainment, information, and marketing I call "infomarketainment." Yes, clever portmanteaus like that are just one of the things you can expect from this newsletter! Hey, wait, don't unsubscribe yet! There's still more to come--perhaps you might be interested in learning who won our door prizes and the charity raffle? Well, if you are, keep reading! Or, you could just scan down to where the prize stuff is. I'd prefer for you to keep reading, though!

Here's a quick primer of some of the great information you can find in the newsletter. We have comic reviews over in that left-hand column, provided your browser recognizes the code I wrote. We also have a shipping list at the bottom of the left-hand corner detailing all the items shipping this week and next week. This week's releases are guaranteed to arrive unless there is a shipping error. Next week's releases are all tentative, so the books may not be arriving the following week. We also list delays in our schedule schmedule section near the bottom of this right-hand column, except for books that will only be delayed until next week, in which case they should be on the shipping list for next week. Our Fanboy Spotlight highlights some of the more interesting comic and gaming releases of each week, and we also have coupons in the newsletter that you can print out and bring into the store each week.

To those newsletter readers who missed Free Comic Book Day, we have assembled something a virtual re-creation of the event. So don your techno-glasses and interface with the mainframe, as we enter a cyberworld of infinite e-possibilities dot com!

THIS IS A BANNER BUT IT IS NOT A BRUCE BANNER HYUK HYUK
This banner was instrumental in making people aware of Free Comic Book Day! Also, nobody stole our posts during this event, so I would say the banner was an unequivocal success!

WE MAY HAVE SAID THAT THERE WOULD BE FREE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS TO THE FIRST FIFTY PEOPLE IN LINE BUT I DON'T THINK THERE ARE ANY RECORDS THAT COULD BE SUBPOENAED IN COURT SAYING SO
Free Comic Book Day was so popular we had people lined up like this outside the door at 10:00 AM!

...IN 1998!
...ON MARCH 27th!!! Well, not really. I was totally amazed, though.

THESE ARE HEROES OF THE HIGHEST CALIBUR except for that darth vader guy who's just the sort to point out that I misspelled calibre
The event was so popular that Darth Vader and Spider-Man showed up! Also popular with Darth Vader and Spider-Man were appearance fees, it turns out.

YEAH, GO GET 'EM SPIDER-MAN!
We seriously had to pay him like twenty bucks for this picture. What a jerk.

YOU HAVE FAILED TO ACCENTUATE MY NATURAL HIGHLIGHTS WITH PROPER LIGHTING FOR THE LAST TIME, CAMERAMAN
Thanks to the filmmaker's trick of "forced perspective," nobody realizes that Darth Vader is actually just twenty-three inches tall! He also has weird claw hands.

MY FAVORITE COMIC IN THIS PICTURE - SCIENCE POLICE 3000 THE NEW GENERATION ALTHOUGH THAT MIGHT HAVE JUST BEEN A DREAM I HAD ONE TIME
This is where you could get all sorts of great comics! Or you could get the terrible free ones on the table there. Well, they were actually pretty good, but that doesn't really help the joke work.

I'M PRETTY SURE THIS TABLE ALSO HAD A CRIME-COMPUTER OR SOMETHING
The Cape Fear Literacy Council was present to reassure people that we were not just going to take their money and spend it all on drugs and skee-ball. They were also warily keeping an eye out for their archnemeses on the sinister Illiteracy Council and their malevolent leader, DYSLEXIOS.

I WAS KIND OF HOPING WE COULD GET A LIVE FEED BY THE HAWK SO I COULD INJURE PERRY STONE TO THE POINT WHERE HE WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO SPEAK AGAIN
The Bone radio station was on hand to cover the event! I don't know what their coverage was like, because we were listening to a CD of Jackson and me screming obscenities into a microphone as loud as possible for a half hour. Fortunately, this had no effect on the customers inside.

CAN YOU TELL WHICH OF THESE PEOPLE WERE NOT OFFICIAL FANBOY-COMICS SPONSORED COSTUMED CHARACTERS? THE ANSWER MAY SURPRISE YOU
We were also at Mayfaire Cinemas! As were Spider-Man, Venom, Chris Cully, and Robocop (in a festive Spider-Man costume).

WOAH COOL
Here's friend of the store Jarvis and his Jewish friend (sorry, in-joke) hanging out with a sculpture of the Silver Surfer.

I THINK VENOM IS TAKING THE TIME TO APOLOGIZE ONE AT A TIME TO ALL ARTISTS FOR TODD MCFARLANE
What does Venom's stylish fanny pack contain? My guess: dollar coins and EVIL.

If You Liked This...

We gave out a whole lot of awesome free comics on Free Comic Book Day, but if you liked them, you might not know what sort of other comics are right for you. Fortunately, we at Fanboy Comics have a near-omnipotent level of knowledge about comic books, and can recommend the perfect comic book based entirely on how much money we need to make to keep Thomas from yelling at us! Uh, wait, I mean that we can base it on your tastes and interests. Heck, we even have a display about it.

Anyway, there are several excellent suggestions we can make for fans of our Free Comic Book Day books. Here are some our recommendations:

Fanboy Comics Doesn't Just Sell Stuff!

We also buy things!  Here's a rundown of the main stuff:

  • Silver Age Superhero Comics - While recent comics are all pretty enjoyable, we really only want the Silver Age Superhero stuff.  The Silver Age is generally going to be comics published on or before 1977.  It can sometimes be hard to figure out the date a comic was published, so a good rule of thumb is that the cover price should be $0.35 or less.  And while we have nothing against comics not about superheroes, the stuff we can sell is Silver Age Superheroes.
  • Used Trade Paperbacks - If they're in decent condition, we'll probably pick them up.  It's difficult to give any hard and fast guidelines for what we want, because it depends a lot on what we have in stock and what we can order.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Singles - We only buy rares, and I can give you even fewer guidelines about this.  Mac is in charge of all of our singles sales, and he works on Thursday through Monday, so those are really the only days we can buy any cards.
  • Used Roleplaying Games - We'll look at pretty much any roleplaying games.  We don't usually buy stuff that is currently in print, but if you've got the time to stop by, it's worth a shot.  We're always interested in classic Dungeons and Dragons books.
  • Used Records - Thomas buys a lot of old jazz and blues records for his personal collection.  Records are like CDs, except black and older.  Kind of like the blues musicians Thomas likes!
  • Vintage Paperbacks and Pulps - I don't know anything about these.  We might buy them, though!
Be sure to call before you come by to make sure we're not too busy to look at your stuff!  We can also set up an appointment.  Just call (910) 452-7828 or email fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.

HOORAY FOR SUPERHEROES
Countdown #51

Well, now's your chance to win back the money you lost when you took Week 17 in the "What Week Will 52 Be Delayed" Pool.  DC's shown that it can put out a weekly title on time, but that was a weekly written by four superstar writers in an intensely collaborative effort.  This time, the biggest name involved is Paul Dini, who--while an excellent writer--hasn't compiled the library of work that Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, and Geoff Johns each have.  He's being supported by the duo of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, up-and-coming writer Adam Beechen, and DC Comics neophyte Shawn McKeever, whose only truly remarkable title to date has been Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.  This series isn't 52 II, (would that be 54?) either--it's not in "real time," it takes place concurrently with main DC continuity, and the writers are scripting individual storylines, as opposed to the uniquely collaborative effort that was 52.  Will this make it better or worse?  Only time can tell, but if they're following 52, they've got to have something up their sleeve.

Marvel Zombies: Dead Days

Don't get me wrong--the Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness series has way exceeded my expectations--it's just that it's good to see the original team back on the book that was probably the surprise hit of last year, with apologies to Mark Millar and Greg Land.  Hopefully, this will delve more into (and I can't believe I'm saying this) the rich history of the Marvel Zombieverse with the same dignity and respect the original Marvel Zombies book had.  Namely, none.

the amazing spider-bruce-wayneAmazing Spider-Man #540

"Back in Black" continues with what I can confidently call, thanks to the magic of preview copies, a damn good story of a man on his way to rock bottom.  J. Michael Straczynski has always written a great Peter Parker, but I was certainly concerned about his ability to convincingly write an upbeat character sinking to the depths of anger and depression that he's going to reach in this series.  I shouldn't have worried, because this issue continues the trend of excellence in all the Spider-books.  Except for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is terrible.

Fanboy Comics is All About INTERNET

It's a new phenomenon sweeping the globe, without borders or boundaries, where nobody is impolite!  It's INTERNET, and Fanboy Comics is all about this exciting new technology.  Not only do we have our website at www.fanboycomics.biz, but we also have a page on the popular sex offender registry, MySpace!  Why, it's right here: at this link.  We also use the magic of INTERNET to provide goods and services to other parts of the globe through our Electronic Bay!  Truly, INTERNET allows us to indulge our passion in all things Thai.

Don't See What You Want in the Store?

Let us know what you're looking for!  We can special order most items, depending on their availability at our distributor.  All that's required on your part is a 50% deposit, and your order will be placed on the next Tuesday and will arrive on either Thursday or Friday of that week, at which point we'll call you.  It's a pretty easy system!

We're Always Looking For Assistance With the Newsletter!

If you produce a comic, or have some art you'd like to submit, or have written a review or anything else that you'd like to see in the newsletter, we're totally cool with that!  Just email editor@fanboycomics.biz, and we'll put your submission in the newsletter if it's appropriate!  Heck, you can even send in plain old comments about the newsletter, the store, or one of our events and we might publish them!  We're really accommodating, it would seem.

It's a Mystery

...Mystery Bags, that is!  These hand-crafted packages are created with all the love and care my mother used to pack my lunches with.  Fortunately, that's an appropriately vague statement that could be interpreted in any number of ways, depending on exactly how unhealthy my relationship with my mother was!  Freudian overtones aside, these Mystery Bags are $5.00 and contain 20 comics!  You can barely get TWO comics for five dollars these days, and here we are selling you 20 comics for that amount.  That's ridiculous.  We also try our hardest to make these bags as all-ages-friendly as possible, so kids can enjoy them too!  We've restocked from the Free Comic Book Day blitz on these Mystery Bags, so be sure to get yours soon!

The Fanboy Spotlight
28 Days Later: The Aftermath GN
I sure am glad that 28 days later came out so zombie snobs could separate themselves from the mere commoner who enjoys zombies even when they can move fast$17.99

I haven't seen this movie, and I don't even like zombies.  You know what that means?  That's right, I'm going to copy and paste something!  Take it away, faceless corporate marketing drone!

Bridging the gap between the original film and its sequel, 28 Days Later: The Aftermath tells the story of one of the last bands of un-infected humans in London, desperately trying to survive in the midst of the Rage virus. Will their salvation come in the form of a rescue, or an over-zealous American army determined to eliminate anything left alive? Like the breakout Halo graphic novel, this full-length novel is told in four interlocking stories by horror maestro Steve Niles. Each chapter of this tale is illustrated by several of the brightest talents in comics today.

Let's all give a big hand to the faceless corporate marketing drone who wrote that ad copy!  Good job!

Y: The Last Man Vol. 9: Motherland
wait they actually reveal important information in this story? HOW WILL BRIAN K. VAUGHAN EVER FIT IN AS A WRITER FOR LOST??!!$14.99

This is the one where they finally reveal the cause of the plague that killed all the men.  The mystery is revealed and I, for one, can't wait.  Sure, it was revealed in the individual issues a few months ago, but who reads those?  Nobody I know.  I'm pretty sure trade paperback sales for Y: The Last Man outnumber sales of the issues by a long shot.  I might be able to verify that information in some way, but why would I really care enough to?  Answer me that.

Oh, right.  If you've been reading Y: The Last Man, you should get this trade.  If you haven't, you should start reading it.  I don't know what else I could add, really.

Eternals HC
CREATED AT THE DAWN OF TIME BY JACK KIRBY'S CRAZY JACK KIRBY STUFF, THE ETERNALS HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH JACK KIRBY$29.99

Well, it looks like Neil Gaiman came down from Mount Legitimate Writer to grace us here in Comic Book Land with his presence.  And hey, since all the cool kids are doing it, why not take a largely-ignored Jack Kirby creation from back in the day and revamp it?  What do you want me to say here?  It's a comic book written by Neil Gaiman, with art by John Romita Jr.  If you don't understand why that makes this awesome, there's not a whole lot I can do otherwise.  I mean, damn, it's Neil Gaiman and John Romita jr.  Just read the book, people.

Aliens vs. Predator HorrorClix Sets
WHOEVER WINS...WILL GET A MEDAL OR SOMETHING I DON'T KNOWAliens Set - $30.00
Predators Set - $30.00

HorrorClix has finally got the licensing tie-in that it's needed from the beginning: Aliens and Predators!  Lovecraft is great and all, but there's really only so much you can do to sculpt unknowable non-euclidian horrors.  Painting the Color From Space would probably be a lot more trouble than it's worth, too--and the worst part is, if you do a good job, everyone who sees it will go insane!  If the Alien Queen set was any indication, these are going to be some pretty cool minis.  So buy now, before they go out of stock!

Pirates of the Spanish Main RPG
BASED ON THE SMASH HIT MINIATURES GAME WHERE YOU KIND OF PUT THE SHIPS TOGETHER FROM CARDS OR SOMETHING$39.99

There are pretty much only two systems I would ever want to use for a swashbuckling roleplaying game: 7th Sea or Savage Worlds.  The 7th Sea system was tons of fun, but had some unfortunate flaws, and Savage Worlds would have required too much work on my part.  Fortunately, Pinnacle Entertainment Group has brought pirates to the Savage Worlds, and all I had to do was wait!  For some reason, they've tied it to the license for the now-largely-defunct Pirates constructible card game, but whatever!  I honestly don't care, as long as I get me some adventure on the high seas using what I consider to be one of the best rules-light systems on the market these days.  I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1 TP
AN ENSEMBLE BOOK in which guy gardner ensembles you in the face$12.99

Everybody love Guy Gardner!  Unfortunately, they didn't seem to be able to justify having comics devoted to three different heroes with essentially the same powers, so they let the Green Lantern and Ion titles do their own thing, and lumped Guy Gardner into the book about the corps as a whole.  As such, you're pretty much treated to half Guy Gardner, half other people, but fortunately for Guy Gardner fans, both halves are quite good!  The other primary character is some chick from Sinestro's home planet, where the Green Lantern symbol is pretty much the equivalent of a swastika in their minds.  All in all, it's a good read for fans of Guy Gardner and the Corps in general.

NEW Player's Choice Tournaments! The players can choose one of the following tournaments:

Booster Draft - $13 Entry
How a Booster Draft Works: Each player gets three packs, and all players sit around a table in a circle. After all the cards have been drafted, each player makes a deck from the cards he has and plays in a single-elimination tournament where the winner gets about 1.5 packs per participant!

Type I or II Constructed - $5 Entry

BRANTLEY

I think mike mignola still did the art he just said fegredo did it because he was terrified everyone would hate it because he is a nervous wreck. or fegredo just does a really good job of imitating mignola's style. whatever.

Hellboy: Darkness Calls #1

Writer: Mike Mignola
Artist: Duncan Fegredo
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $2.99

There ain't nothing wrong with Hellboy. I'm an occasional reader of the character's myriad miniseries and ancillary titles, but I'll count myself as a forever fan of Mike Mignola's signature creation. From comics to live action and animated films, Hellboy has always remained a personality-driven and multi-dimension character, rather than one constantly viewed through twisty, dark and outlandish plots. The stories are always tasty, but the real feast is in the life that's been granted to Mignola's characters.

This latest miniseries, Darkness Calls, comes a year after the last storyline, the Island. Artist problems lead to the lengthy delay, but the wait was well worth it. While Mignola is these days focusing more on the writing than the art, new artist Duncan Fegredo more than ably fills Mignola's shoes by evoking the creator's style of sketchy, creepy line work and maintaining a gritty grandiosity. Hellboy is as fun as ever.

Following closely on the heels of the Island, Hellboy has returned to England, washed ashore and into the seaside home of his buddy Harry. The feral cats still love him. The big, red beast is trying to catch his bearings, get some R&R and recuperate from his last adventure. Of course, it's not much of a break as Hellboy is quickly roped into some witchcraft and lunacy that's hiding out in the blue-hued woods. The intrigue basically drips from the page in huge, gooey globs.

Hellboy is going to be taking on witches in this one, witches who are messing with his mind. Also along for the story is the legendary witch hunter Henry Hood, he of the mid-1600s, who managed to off plenty of accused witches, but couldn't resist the fleshy temptations of one doomed lass, a decision which quickly led to his undoing. There are plenty of ghouls and nude witches, and one toad-like countryman who comes to look like his power animal. It's all dark fun with a light edge. The story is blissful and nuanced, the artwork is tricky and brooding, and Hellboy has rarely been more at home on the page.

RATING: 4/5

the remarkable story of a loyal dog who rescues his owner from a wicked realtor

Alien Pig Farm 3000 #1

Writer: Todd Farmer
Artist: Don Marquez
Colorist: Grant Goleash
Publisher: Image Comics/Raw Studios
Price: $2.99

Hollywood's Frank Castle, Thomas Jane, and IDW Publishing's glory boy, Steve Niles, have a nice friendship going between movie and comic projects. They're buddy-buddy in the imprint Raw Studios, a venture that has produced the title Bad Planet. Issue #1 of that series was released in December 2005. Issue #2 is...well, it's supposed to be coming soon. Smells like blood in the water. Maybe the comic thing isn't working out so well?

Raw Studio's newest title is Alien Pig Farm 3000, with Jane and Niles helping nurse along a story written by Todd Farmer (who's also writing/directing the Hack/Slash movie project). On paper, this is the B-movie lunacy of Invader from Mars mind-melded with Dukes of Hazzard, along with a healthy amount of incestuous imbeciles. Nope, it's not a book that's going to win awards or turn many heads, but the low-brow concept should be good enough for a fun time.

Sadly, Alien Pig Farm 3000 doesn't even reach those modest heights. Backwoods Kentucky (pig farming capital Horton County, to be exact) step-brothers Johnny Ray and Elvis and in the midst of evading the po-lice and protecting their moonshine distillery operation. Quickly into the story, the jig is up and the boys need to blow up their goods. The subsequent escape leads Elvis to a suddenly-disrupted Alien transport ship, while Johnny Ray schemes with his lover/sister to run off from the podunk town.

Following a brief and convenient prologue, the aliens don't appear in the storyline proper until the very last page. Sure, #1 is all set-up, but what about a little bit of payoff? Just a taste of alien carnage and mayhem? Not a chance. The characters here are too derivative and not interesting enough to deserve the attention those multi-eyed and multi-tentacled aliens so richly deserved. Farmer's story just isn't fun enough, and there's nothing here you haven't seen plenty of in the past. Sadly enough, it's sort of boring. Niles, for sure, has more in him as a story contributor.

Don Marquez artwork does what it can be keeping the character designs light and the action goofy (with the occasional lack of logical angles). The silliness just can't make up for the lack of carnage. Issue #2 has to be better, so see this one as a primer, if you must.

RATING: 1/5

BASED ON THE HIT CW SHOW (i'm pretty sure 'hit cw show' is an oxymoron)

Supernatural: Origins #1

Writer: Peter Johnson (backup story by Geoff Johns)
Artist: Matthew Dow Smith (backup story by Phil Hester)
Colorist: JD Mettler (also on backup story)
Publisher: DC Comics/Wildstorm
Price: $2.99

When the WB network merged with UPN to become the CW network, few shows survived the amalgamation. Wilmington's local teeny-flop soap opera, One Tree Hill, made the cut, as did the serialized spooky-ish series, Supernatural. The latter has been drawn from for the prequel comic series that we have here. For the former's comic book symbiote, Archie and his pals from Riverdale come to mind (and Betty is way hotter than Hilary Burton.)

Since it began in 2005, the Supernatural series has followed the brothers Winchester, Sam and Dean, as they crisscross the country looking into odd occult and paranormal occurrences. Sort of like the Ghostbusters, with a 1970s-era Chevy Impala replacing the Ecto 1, and nobody replacing Bill Murray. If you watch the show, this book may be a middling way to fill in the gaps of weekly episodes. If you don't know Supernatural from Freakylinks, then maybe you should hold on to your comic allowance.

Rather than focus on the show's brothers, this story squares on their father, dealing with the aftermath of his wife's inexplicable, fiery death. He runs around town asking neighbors and acquaintances to help him figure out what happened. They all think he's nuts. His young sons are also concerned about his behavior. The senior Winchester succumbs to depression and foolish behavior, until he falls in with a local soothsayer, named Missouri. It is Missouri who assists John in seeing that the explanation behind his wife's explosive death can be eventually "explained" by looking into something far more evil, bizarre and frightening than he'd ever previously imagined. (Crap...you'd think I was writing copy for Wildstorm with that line. Hey, Jim Lee, have any openings?)

There are a few creepy moments along the way, but nothing you haven't seen before in countless other comics and films (and done better in other stories). Peter Johnson's writing is adequate and keeps the story moving, but it's not terribly engaging-or scary, which is something you really want by the end. There's a decent hook revealed at the end, but it's a little late and a bit of a red herring. The premise here may be: let's see how much crazy stuff we can throw in there and make it get creepier and creepier. But readers are too savvy to go for this type of thing too often. It's just done in too many stories. I'm not falling for it anymore if I can help it. The story's not up to the shocks. Matthew Dow Smith's angular artwork definitely has moments of inspired mood and tension, but the artwork's pacing is nearly as slow going as the script.

Geoff Johns and Phil Hester's short backup story provides a appetizing look into the Winchester brother's confused and awkward relationship. It ends up being more emotional than the main story in the issue, but still doesn't add too much.

Supernatural fans may want to go all completist on this comic (if...oh, who am I kidding?...when there's a Heroes comic, I'm so there), but the story may leave you reaching for the remote to see what else is on the tube.

Finally, the much anticipated World War Hulk is here! Well, sort of! Both this book and Incredible Hulk #106 (for more on that book, see my other review this week) have almost zero Hulk-like action, and really serve as a short prequel to the inevitable smash-fest that will undoubtedly be World War Hulk. So, how is World War Hulk looking based on these two issues? Really, really good, actually.

World Breaker is quite possibly one of the best event prologues ever written, in the sense that it effectively sets the stage for WWH perfectly with only one issue. Hell, it took Marvel at least eight to prep us for Civil War. There are actually three separate stories in this issue. The first and largest one, “Casus Belli” focuses on both the Hulk, and his cousin, She-Hulk. The Hulk is one his ship heading towards Earth, when it's attacked by space insects. Of course, they're no match for the Hulk, but when his newly acquired friends (commonly referred to as his “Warbound” throughout the book) come to his aid, he begins to attack them as well, blinded by his rage. This alarms his teammates, prompting one of them teaches him to control his anger, in order to channel it against his enemies. Meanwhile on Earth, She-Hulk is busy having an argument with Doc Samson (their conversation is fleshed out more in Incredible Hulk #106).

While “Casus Belli” deals with the immediate happenings prior to World War Hulk, “Round Trip” provides a humorous look at Planet Hulk using the infamous Mini Marvels. You know, that cartoony page that occasionally appears at the end of various Marvel comics? Well they're back, and this time it's genuinely funny, instead off just something to fill that last page so they can advertise the book as being 32 pages. In addition to being funny, it does an excellent job of summarizing the entire Planet Hulk arc.

The third story, “Mastermind Excello” is a direct reprint of his origin story from Amazing Fantasy #15. Mastermind Excello is a relatively new character in the Marvel Universe. He's a super genius (the seventh smartest person in the world, to be exact), capable of computing thousands of mathematical equations in a second. While this may seem like a really lame power, when you combine that with his master of physics, he's a force to be reckoned with. For example, near the end of this story he is being pursued by a helicopter while riding a Vespa. How does he get avoid being shot by the guy on the helicopter pointing a rocket launcher at him? Simple, he kicks his rear view mirror to reflect the laser sight back into the shooter's eye (since when does a rocket launches need a laser sight?), temporarily blinding him, and causing him to shoot the rocket at Bruce Banner, causing him to turn into the Hulk, who destroys the helicopter and saves Excello, after which he and Excello share a moment, which is why Excello is going to be such a big player in World War Hulk. Why was he being chased in the first place? Something about a baby coyote.

While the art of all three stories is vastly different, it's all very good and suits the tone of the story well. “Casus Belli” has a serious tone driven by detail and dark, muted colors. Mini Marvels is the same as it ever was, simplistic and cartoony, which is the way it should be. “Mastermind Excello” has a distinctive Asian quality to it. The spiked hair and large eyes give it a manga look, but it's a good mange look.

What makes this prologue so great, is that it's really all you need to dive right into WWH. You don't even have to read Planet Hulk (although I don't see why you wouldn't, because it's awesome). On top of that, it's highly entertaining. It's not afraid to through humor into it's stories, as there's a healthy dose in the latter two stories. Since when did comics always have to be serious? I especially like the boxes with arrows used for identifying objects of importance in the panel. I just hope that the other WWH books can be as good as this one. If they are, you're looking at one of the best comic events in years. -Reviewer Tristan Hoagland attends classes at UNCW.

The Incredible Hulk #106

Writer: Greg Pak
Penciler: Gary Frank
Inker: Jon Sibal
Colorist: Chris Sotomayor
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $2.99

While World Breaker served as a general introduction to WWH, this issue focuses almost exclusively on She-Hulk and Mastermind Excello. It starts out by recapping the events that transpired in She-Hulk #18, which is strange, because that book hasn't even come out yet. Namely, Iron Man reveals that they shot him into space, She-Hulk gets angry and punches him , he injects her with nanobots, and drops her in the middle of a forest. There she's met by Excello, who tries to convince her to join the Hulk's side in the upcoming war. Then Doc Samson shows up. Remember that argument Jen was having with Doc Samson in World Breaker about Hulk's return? Well, here she finds out that he was directly involved with his exile. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say that there is a generous amount of smashing to be had. Excello escapes during their fight, and comes upon some potential allies for the upcoming war.

This is an important issue not only because it sets the stage for both She-Hulk's and Mastermind Excello's involvement in the war, but it also sets some subtler precedents that will most likely carry over into the rest of the WWH event. For example, it appears that Iron Man will be taking a step down from his former throne of “Marvel's Biggest Bastard” and handing it over to Reed Richards for the time being. Don't get me wrong, Iron Man is still an incredible ass, but Mr. Fantastic appears to be the main conspirator in this events (judging solely by his involvement in this issue). Likewise, it also begins drawing the lines for the various sides. It's obvious that Doc Sampson is already embedded within the Illuminati side, and we know that Excello and She-Hulk are most likely with the Hulk, but what about Hercules and Angel? At the end of this issue, it could really go either way with them, but regardless it appears that they to will be key roles in WWH. Also, it looks like the Incredible Hulk tie-ins will be dealing with She-Hulk more than the Hulk himself, which I guess explains why none of the She-Hulk books are on the World War Hulk checklist, despite her playing such an important role. And finally, it solidifies by suspicion that Marvel has some kind of deal going on with The Colbert Report, because this is the fourth time he's been referenced to within Marvel in the last few months. Between Joe Quesada appearance on his show, Colbert's cameo in Friendly-Neighborhood Spider-Man #15, and Marvel's publicity stunt where they sent him a replica of Captain America's shield after his death, and now this, the most blatant one yet, where Reed Richard openly states that he watches The Colbert Report “as often as his schedule permits.”

I don't have any real complaint about the art work, as Gary Frank makes She-Hulk and Doc Samson look pretty good, but I'm not a big fan of how Excello is drawn in this book. But, apparently he thinks Mastermind Excello looks best if he has his mouth half-way open, just exposing his top row of teeth in every single panel. Apparently Gary Frank is wrong. Overall, it's a good book, and a must read for anybody who's planning on reading WWH. Between this book and the fantastic prologue, world War Hulk is looking to be one hell of a sweet ride. Too bad we won't get to see anymore of it for another month. -Rapmaster MC Tristan "Hoag" Land is southeastern North Carolina's pre-eminent freestyle lyricist in the category of jazz-funk fusion, narrowly staying one step ahead of his arch-rival, DJ Jazzy Freshmouth.

Editor's Notes

CBS News has just learned that Sam Raimi and Avi Arad are having a meeting!  Let's go there:

Avi Arad: Hey, Sam, are you going to put Venom in your movie?
Sam Raimi: No, I hate Venom.
Avi Arad: Uh, it wasn't a question.
Sam Raimi: Oh.

What sort of day was it? A day like all days, filled with those events that alter and illuminate our times... and you were there.

Also, you did not have nearly enough time to make this half-baked bit not suck.

NEXT WEEK: Something less awful!
