With all the interest in the Fantastic Four these days, we'd be quite lax in our responsibilities if we didn't help you find the best Fantastic Four trade paperbacks and graphic novels. Last week, we did the top Fantastic Four collections--this week, we highlight the top 5 collections featuring Fantastic Four antagonists! And also one featuring the Thing, because it's really cool:

you know what? the silver surfer sucks i hate him5) The Essential Silver Surfer, Vol. 1

That Fantastic Four collection I spotlighted (spotlit?) last week contained the first appearance of the Silver Surfer, but this collection contains his origin and the acclaimed solo series by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and John Buscema! There's not really any more authoritative source on the history and character of the Silver Surfer than this philosophical series from the masters of Marvel.

what a revoltin development clobbering time etc and so on4) The Thing: Idol of Millions

The ever-loving blue-eyed thing finally got his own ongoing series a few years ago and, while it was cancelled after eight issues, it was a damn good series. It was written very much in the vein of the recent She-Hulk series, with a tongue-in-cheek focus on the day-to-day life of a superhero who's also a recognizable public figure, without the supervillains and obligatory fights--not really a surprise, though, since writer Dan Slott also wrote the She-Hulk book. The concluding issue where the Thing has a bunch of super-heroes over for a poker game is perhaps one of the most fun comic issues ever written. Definitely check this one out.

DOOM WILL OBLITERATE YOU3) Fantastic Four: The Books of Doom

Doctor Doom has a fairly convoluted origin story, what with the magic and the science and the Reed Richards and what-have-you, so this series is a much-needed consolidation of the origin of perhaps the best villain in comicsdom. And, hey, it's written by Ed Brubaker to boot! Framed as an interview with the infamous Doctor in his own castle, this retelling of Doom's origin in his own words also has a clever twist ending that doesn't feel cheap or unnecessary.

i really like this story in spite of galactus not being a big purple dude2) Ultimate Galactus Trilogy

Honestly, I don't think this series got nearly enough attention. It was actually pretty danged interesting and pretty danged well-written. Not a surprise, given that Warren Ellis wrote it, but it never really seemed to get any acclaim. Also, it never really seemed to get mentioned again in any of the other Ultimate titles, which probably didn't help. It's awesome, though, and certainly does a great job of re-imagining some classic Marvel characters like Vision, Captain Marvel, the Silver Surfer, and--of course--Galactus. Not to mention that the, uh...Ultimate Ultimate Nullifier is incredibly cool. It's a great trilogy, with each title standing on its own merits, and there's no better way to pick up a long series like this than one of Marvel's oversized hardcovers. Fourteen issues for thirty-five bucks is a steal on a series this good.

who would have thought space heroes could be this awesome1) Annihilation, Vol. 2

This one is pretty much a placeholder until the final volume of Annihilation that collects the actual miniseries comes out. Until then, though, this collection should whet your appetite, as it features an excellent Silver Surfer miniseries and a quite good Super-Skrull miniseries. Still, the thing to watch for is that third volume, where you'll see an epic space story featuring the Silver Surfer, Galactus and Annihilus in prominent roles--all of whom are highly ranked among the annals of Fantastic Four antagonism, to boot.

i don't think i've heard a single person talk about this series without saying 'i hope he kills iron man'World War Hulk #1

Hulk is back, and he's very mellow and open-minded and wishing to open a dialogue between himself and those he has issues with so they can reach an amicable resolution and stay friends!  Or maybe he's just angry.  I forget.  Either way, Hulk is going to be punching a bunch of dudes, buildings, and possibly trees, because that's kind of what he does.  Also, he has a bunch of alien buddies who will provide variations on the theme of "punching," such as "stabbing" (punching someone while holding a sword) "biting" (punching someone with your mouth) and "clobbering" (punching someone really really hard).

remember when the avengers were fun? well here's a book to pander to you, grandpaAvengers Classic #1

These days, what with the Civil Wars, and the Initiatives, and the Disassembleds, and the House of Ms and what have you, the Avengers are in a state of change beyond any they've seen in a long time.  Heck, there's even two different Avengers teams, and like an Avengers University, and next thing you know there's going to be Avengers reserves or something.  Well, some people still like the good old days of the Avengers, and I guess the two Earth's Mightiest Heroes miniseries weren't enough for them.  So, there's this new Avengers Classic series, and it has a cool cover by Art Adams.

NAMOR WANTS TO BLOW YOU UPSub-Mariner #1

Namor is awesome.  Especially when he is about to go kick the ass of us surface-worlders.  Because, let's be honest, we really deserve it.  We're kind of jerks.  Anyway, Namor is back.  He doesn't punch anything in this issue, per se, but he does certainly berate people, which is pretty much the second weapon in Namor's arsenal--the first, of course, being punching.  Also, we get an insight into the dark underbelly of atlantean politics.  For instance, I think Namor berates a dude and then threatens to punch him.  It's good times!

from what i know about strangers in paradise's release schedule, the fact that this is issue 90 means that, based on math, the comic has been published for seven hundred yearsStrangers In Paradise #90

It's finally coming to an end.  The epic saga about several people who have relationships and day-to-day lives and so on and so forth is going to end with this landmark issue, with three different covers for you completists out there!  Guess what?  I've completely exhausted my knowledge about this book in that previous sentence, much of which I just made up and assumed would be correct based on my prejudices towards indie books!  Maybe you should come by the store to buy this issue and explain to me why I am an imbecile!

i never saw the movie which means I probably have the highest opinion of tank girl of anyone these daysTank Girl: The Gifting #1

this photoshop was way too time-consuming to only use it for three weeks

It's easy to learn to play games! Just stop by Fanboy Comics on Tuesday or Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM and find Atwood "The Rib" Boyd, our newly hired Game Counselor! He'll be available to teach you any game you want, or just to play games! That's right, we've got someone on staff whos job is to play games! As a fellow employee who has to spend hours photoshopping together obscure video game magazine references, I can confindently say that I'm not bitter at all. Oh, wait, I was mistaken, I'm incredibly bitter. That's not really a change from the status quo, though, since I am pretty much a barely contained fountain of rage.

The Rib will also be around to help people paint and build their armies, and he'll have a ton of free stuff to give away to people who show up for demos. You can also sign up in our game directory, a way for people to connect with gamers they don't even know yet!

The Rib also runs board game demos on Board Game Night, every Monday. Here's a flyer about that:

So, uh, I guess these are the hot new thing among the kids these days.  Between this and the Transformers game, it's almost like everyone had a secret meeting and decided that, by god, just because the Pirates game is flagging and the NASCAR game failed doesn't mean we don't want to put together our miniatures out of cardstock!  Unfortunately, this one hits all the right notes--specifically the Star Wars ship combat note. (an E sharp) Hopefully it'll be a fun game!  I'm looking forward to it, as far as you know!

You know everything I said about Volume 3 of the Essential Fantastic Four? Well, it goes double for this, which collects all of the same stories in an extra-large, full-color, hardcover edition. It's pretty much the only way you'll be able to read this issues this way short of traveling back in time to the 1960s. Reactivated Kingdom Come Series 2 Action Figures
hey cool its the cool green lantern with the armor and the being incredibly old and all

These action figures look pretty danged cool.  Of course, you can see that if you shift your eyes slightly to the right, and possibly up, depending on how this ends up looking on the webpage.  Honestly, I'm glad that they're giving us another shot at some of the Kingdom Come figure's we've missed.  As much as I like Kingdom Come Jade and the Spectre with Old-Guy™ sidekick, I really prefer some of the more iconic characters like Kingdom Come Green Lantern and Kingdom Come Superman.

Who's Who Mystery Boxes Series 3
seriously guys you could give us an actual darkseid you had to give us a statue$5.99 Each

The newest series of figures in the Who's Who series are all themed around the delightfully-named planet of Apokalips.  What an inconvenient homophone that must be for the residents of that planet.  It would be like if the Chinese word for China was "DEESTRUKSHIN" or something like that.  That aside aside, there's a lot of cool figures in this set, including Big Barda and Mr. Miracle, Batman, Superman, Plastic Man, Wonder Woman, and Orion and the other one who isn't Orion, maybe Desaad or something.  (Sorry, I closed the window that had the information and I am too lazy to open it again, in spite of the fact that this parenthetical note is taking way longer to write than it would to bring up that information again.)  Also, each figure has a different piece that allows you to put together a miniature Darkseid statue!

This auction contains the sheet music of So Long, Mother from Al Jolson's Mother Song. Words by Raymond Egan and Gus Kahn and music by Egbert Van Alstyne. This music was published by Jerome H. Remick Co. in 1917. These pages are complete and in nice shape. There's lite edge and corner wear and a couple small tears along edges. There's also some small writing on front cover. Don't miss out on this wonderful bit of music history.

Perfect for framing!!

creepyCut: The Unseen Cinema

This auction contains the vintage soft cover book Cut: The Unseen Cinema by Baxter Phillips. This rare book was published in 1975 by Bounty Books. This book features countless photos and descriptions about the taboo scenes cut from some of the most famous movies, such as Birth of a Nation, Freaks, A Streetcar Named Desire, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, and many others. It's in (VG) condition or better with lite edge and corner wear. Very nice interior, complete with a couple of pages of full color photographs!

We Buy Stuffs

Here's a rundown of the main stuff we buy:

  • Silver Age Superhero Comics - While recent comics are all pretty enjoyable, we really only want the Silver Age Superhero stuff. The Silver Age is generally going to be comics published on or before 1977. It can sometimes be hard to figure out the date a comic was published, so a good rule of thumb is that the cover price should be $0.35 or less. And while we have nothing against comics not about superheroes, the stuff we can sell is Silver Age Superheroes.
  • Used Trade Paperbacks - If they're in decent condition, we'll probably pick them up. It's difficult to give any hard and fast guidelines for what we want, because it depends a lot on what we have in stock and what we can order.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Singles - We only buy rares, and I can give you even fewer guidelines about this. Mac is in charge of all of our singles sales, and he works on Thursday through Monday, so those are really the only days we can buy any cards.
  • Used Roleplaying Games - We'll look at pretty much any roleplaying games. We don't usually buy stuff that is currently in print, but if you've got the time to stop by, it's worth a shot. We're always interested in classic Dungeons and Dragons books.
  • Used Records - Thomas buys a lot of old jazz and blues records for his personal collection. Records are like CDs, except black and older. Kind of like the blues musicians Thomas likes!
  • Vintage Paperbacks and Pulps - I don't know anything about these. We might buy them, though!
Be sure to call before you come by to make sure we're not too busy to look at your stuff! We can also set up an appointment. Just call (910) 452-7828 or email fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.

Daredevil: Battlin' Jack Murdock #1

Writers: Zeb Wells and Carmine Di Giandomenico
Art: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Daredevil is a serious dude. If you invited him to a party, he'd be that guy in the corner with a glass of Jim Beam, looking down at the furniture while people come up to him and ask, "What's wrong, pal?" and he'd be like, "What's wrong? Do you watch the news?" Daredevil is not the guy you take on a double date, cause he'll end up either leaving early or saying something deep and insightful, showing you up. You want a buddy, hang with Peter Parker. You need a guy to kick some ass? Chill with Matt Murdock.

So, since I believe in Nurture vs. Nature, how did Matty get this way? You have to point at his childhood, and how he was brought up. Thus, Daredevil: Battlin' Jack Murdock is poised to answer some very interesting questions about Matt and his early life and his father. The idea that this story is told from the father's prospective appeals to me. I know nothing about Jack Murdock besides that fact that he was mobbed up. The comic will be four issues long, each issue covering a "round" in Jack's last fight. As Jack is fighting, he will also be flashing back into his past, and the events that have lead him to his finest moment.

The book is great on many levels. The writing, by Wells, is superb. It is simple, clean, not over-the-top, and real. Jack Murdock quickly has a voice and it's a voice that matches the Daredevil universe. Lines like, "You gotta be careful who teaches you about the world..." ring with truth that you can't ignore. And it doesn't sound cheap or uninteresting. It truly captures the reader.

The art style is probably the main reason I like this book so much. The lines Di Giandomenico uses are so crisp and tight and thin that it must have taken months to make perfect. Every line seems needed. Nothing is wasted. It has this strange complicated yet bare-bones feel to it. We are seeing exactly what we have to see. No more. No less. It is truly controlled, but takes artistic risks. I would love to see this art style in a Spider-man book. The city has a certain freshness to it and the emotions on the characters' faces are transparent. It is truly a joy to glance over this book's pages.

If I'm worried about anything, its that the book with be a) late or b) boring. I'm not sure what Jack Murdock has to offer to the wonderful Marvel Universe. However, I can't wait to pick up the next issue. This is an exciting time for comics, especially with wonderful gems like these popping their heads up...

i am one hundred per cent shocked that a comic summarizing the plot of a michael bay movie is not spectacular

Transformers: The Official Movie Adaptation #1

Writer: Kris Oprisko
Art: Alex Milne
Colors: Josh Perez
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Price: $3.99

Once in a great while, a movie comes out that is so special, that is so amazing, that you can't help but be excited about it. And, of course, once in that great while, a comic book adaptation will be released along with the movie that will be so horrible and so mind-numbing bad that you want to toss it in the WM recycle bin. The Transformers Adaptation is that book.

As a rule, most comic adaptations are bad. This rule has seldom been broken, and many publishers are changing marketing strategies to adjust. When the first Spider-man movie came out, Marvel also released Ultimate Spider-man. USM rebooted Spider-man for a younger, hipper audience and, at the same time, gave some attention to the Spider-man books and the movie. Ultimate Spider-man wasn't a translation of the movie, but held on to certain themes. Now Ultimate Spider-man is one of the most successful books on the market. When Superman Returns came out, DC did release an adaptation, but they also focused on the current Superman books, letting high profile writers take the helm. If anything, a movie adaptation is a great way to get non-comic readers into a store and buy comics. That's why they make them. But, what is the point of making a bad adaptation? Do publishers want to make future fans puke? Is that the deal? IDW had the chance to do something interesting and, instead, we get road-kill nasty.

So, why is the book so bad? A few things. One, the writing. Kris Oprisko has no idea about time on the comic page. A lot of information is packed into each panel. Instead of getting the full view of the world, we are getting snap shots. It is like we are looking at key frames from the movie, with caption or dialogue bubbles to make sense of it. There are some key elements that the movie will deal with that the comic brings up. SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! Apparently the transformers are looking for the "Allspark" and that the human, Spike, has some relation to it. Or, at least, knows where it is. As far as the plot is concerned, there is nothing special here. The bad guys and the good guys want this thing. And one side is willing to do whatever it takes to get it, while the other side wants to keep collateral damage at a minimum. Capitalism vs. Socialism, FTW! Anyway, all the stuff I just wrote is deeper than anything you'll read in this comic. And the dialogue? Oh god. Spike says to hot-chick Mikaela: "Shallow? No, I think...there's a lot more to you than meets the eye." I seriously vomited after I read that.

And the art? Worse. No demonstration of dramatic scene. No interesting angles. No sense of style. No sense of weight. The transformers don't look metal, they look plastic. The same thing I'm complaining about in the book I'll probably complain about in the movie. The inking is garbage. The color effects are lackluster. I'll just stop right there.

In a nutshell, don't buy this book unless you absolutely have to know what the plot of the movie is. That's its only worth. But, we are talking about a Michael Bay film, so any hope you have of watching a movie with a plot you should go ahead and toss out a window. You are not going to see Transformers for any reason besides big robots. And, sadly, big robots aren't enough to buy this sorry Adaptation.

Invincible #42

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Ryan Ottley
Colors: Bill Crabtree
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $1.99

I know exactly how Invincible snuck under my radar. I love comics, but I don't get a chance to read everything. No one can read everything, and I'm pretty proud of myself for knowing most of the events in the Marvel Universe and a respectable amount of the events in the DC universe. But, I know nothing about Invincible or the universe he is in. So what's a brother to do? Ah, I know! Buy this comic!

Invincible #42 has a lot of good points going for it. For one, it is a perfect jumping on book. The story is simple, we get to meet all the important characters, and there is a big think recap in the back of it, telling everything you need to know to get you going. It reminds me of what Marvel use to do a few years ago, with that pull out page that told everything that happened thus far. Why did they quit doing that? Anyway, Invincible has a pretty thick history and the book goes a long way in helping to explain it.

Ryan Ottley's art is impressive as well. I'm weird when it comes to comic art. The style doesn't matter as much to me as the artist's sense of control. I like it when you can tell that an artist knows what he is doing, has a sense of composition, of technique. When he knows how to do a panel layout. When he knows the emotional power of a splash page. Most mainstream comic artists are aware of these techniques, and Ottley is great at it. I'm sort of surprised that he isn't doing a more mainstream book. His style reminds me of early Robin or Superboy books. It looks playful, but can turn serious. And he does an amazing job penciling emotion on the characters faces. The color and shading effects add to the style. The colors almost jump off the page. Nicely done, indeed.

The writing? Eh. Robert Kirkman tends to overwrite. He doesn't trust his readers. He thinks that he has to say a hundred words to get his point across, when fifty would do. Hell, ten would do. This isn't the Iliad. Superhero comics have an intrinsic base of information. We get it. Kirkman isn't using the idea that comic readers would get it to his advantage. He's just pounding away at the keys. The results? A page full of dialogue that the reader has to wade through. Plus, there is an untapped emotion that is layered on the page, but isn't dealt with. Invincible seems bored, and that boredom could cause some interesting story lines in the future. It would be interesting if this writing style is consistent, or if Kirkman is just concerned about getting new readers up to speed.

Verdict? I like this book. And at $1.99, it's a steal. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to get into a good series, or if you're tired of Civil War and the evil Iron Man! Pick Invincible up. It's good times.

Notes From the Editor

Thanks to my privileged status as a comic shop employee, I have access to a wide array of inside information or, as it is known to the layman, spoilers.  For example, those of you who read the solicitation to New Avengers #31 may recall that it said, "The most important last page in any Marvel comic this year!"  But, what is that last page?  What information could possibly shake the Marvel Universe more to its foundations than the Death of Captain America?  I have the answer, right here.  Be warned, this contains intense spoilersMassive, life-altering spoilers.
