THE SPEED FORCE IS LIKE MAGIC, BUT MORE MYSTERIOUSAll-Flash #1

Oh, Bart Allen.  You weren't the Flash for very long, and your book was terrible for about half of that.  Fortunately, Marc Guggenheim salvaged that terrible first arc and turned Bart into a Flash who was actually pretty cool.

Then they killed him.

Fortunately, Wally West is back (thanks to the Lightning Saga in JLA and JSA) and ready to take back up the mantle of the Flash, with Mark Waid lending his writing talents to the project.  Wally's first order of business?  To beat the crap out of the people who killed Bart.  Hopefully the new (old?) Flash will hit the ground running, (HAR) and this All-Flash special will certainly be a good sign of what we can expect.

inspired by the classic what if - 'what if the hulk beat the crap out of everybody in the world'World War Hulk #2

Well, issue one was awesome.  My guess is that issue two will also be awesome.  According to the solicitation, Hulk fights the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.  In issue number two.  God bless whoever it was who decided that, hey, maybe the Hulk should punch the crap out of everything--and then they did that.  World War Hulk: X-Men #2 is also coming out this week, and it's also awesome.  Here's a minor spoiler about how awesome it is:

SPOILER ALERT

The Hulk breaks Colossus's armsWhile he's in his metal form.

FEATURING ULTIMATE SPOT! good lord i can't believe i put an exclamation point at the end of that sentenceUltimate Spider-Man #111

This will be a landmark issue in many respects.  Firstly, it's the final issue of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's record-breaking run on Ultimate Spider-Man.  Secondly, it's the first issue penciled by Stuart Immonen.  And thirdly, it's a landmark issue that has Ultimate Spot, making it the lamest villain ever in a landmark issue as far as I can recall.  Seriously, Bendis, you couldn't throw in a Doctor Octopus appearance or something?  Maybe the Sinister Six?  I mean, really.

Magic: The Gathering Mini-Masters Tournaments Every Thursday in July and August!

What are these "Mini-Masters" tournaments?

The answer is simplicity itself: they are tournaments where each player buys a pack and builds a deck with that one pack!  It's a fun, quick way to get a little extra bonus with a booster pack that you were probably going to buy any day!  If you win your first round game, you get another pack for free to play in the next round and the round after that.  The winner gets one pack for every two players, and the runner-up gets one pack for every four player.

That's a lot of free packs, for little pay-in!

The Fanboy Spotlight
The Hood: Blood From Stones Premiere HC
this character was in beyond, which you also didn't read$19.99

Back in 2002, a new writer named Brian K. Vaughan wrote a Marvel MAX series called The Hood.  Then he became incredibly popular and wrote other stuff, but nobody really seemed to care about the Hood.

Flash forward to now.  New Avengers is the most popular ongoing series in all of comics, and the villain they're soon going to face is one Parker Robbins.  Seeing as how some people might actually want to know who Parker Robbins is, Marvel decided to release a fancy-pants hardcover collection of Vaughan's acclaimed but ultimately ignored series.  I haven't personally read it, but it's by Brian K. Vaughan.  Odds are, it'll be good.  At the worst, it'll help you understand this whole New Avengers arc.

Elseworlds Series 4 Action Figures
THANK GOD THEY FINALLY MADE A SUPERMAN ACTION FIGURE wait what$19.99 Each

In case you can't tell from the picture, this series of Elseworlds action figures includes Batman and the Flash from JSA: The Liberty Files, Wonder Woman from Wonder Woman: Amazonia, and good and evil Supermans from The Dark Side.  I guess they all look pretty cool, too.  See, there's a picture of them, right there, to the right.  Maybe you will like the way they look?

Warhammer: Mighty Empires Expansion
HOORAY NOW OUR BATTLES WILL HAVE SOME SMALL AMOUNT OF CONTEXT$45.00

Well, just when I think I'm getting over my addiction to Games Workshop, they come out with a product that looks likely to drag me back in--and this time, to a game I don't even play!  Mighty Empires looks to be a cool, interesting campaign system with a lot of variety and replayability.  Of course, we'll have to see how the rules work, but even if they suck, the tiles alone are a cool enough idea to at least port to other miniatures games as a dynamic campaign map.  Hey, it's only $45.00 for the whole thing, too, which is cheaper than the actual Warhammer Fantasy rulebook.

Stormwatch PHD Vol. 1 TP

I don't know who these people are$17.99

I think that we can all agree that the Wildstorm relaunch was, at best, a mixed success.  Well, not really.  It more or less sucked.  The books were of varying quality, and the good ones didn't come out on time--or at all.  However, there was a diamond in that terrible, overhyped, frequently-delayed rough: Stormwatch PHD.  (And also Welcome to Tranquility, but that's not what I'm writing about.) While Jim Lee was drawing every single window on each of the twenty skyscrapers in the background of WildC.A.T.S. issue 2 page 4 panel 3, and Grant Morrison was doing whatever the hell it is Grant Morrison does, Christos Gage and Doug Mahnke were quietly putting out not just one of the best book in the Wildstorm Universe, but one of the best books in all of comics.  Stormwatch is an intriguing, well-thought-out look at an organization devoted to stopping super-crime, and it even eases you into the convoluted Wildstorm continuity so new readers aren't lost.  My point is, you should check this book out if you haven't already.

The Warmachine Summer Rampage is Underway!

It's not too late to get started!  Though you may be a week behind, you can play each other player in the league once each week, so if you can get a lot of games in you can easily catch up.  Not to mention boasts and stuff like that.  The best days to come by and play are Thursday at 6:00 PM and Sunday at 5:00 PM, but you can come in and play a league game at any time.  New players are always welcome!

Here are the current standings as of Week 1:

2 Jackson Brantley 8 Skorne
3 Cyrus Marriner 6 Cryx

The full league rules are available in the store. We're largely following the official league rules, but I have house ruled some stuff. The official rules document can be found at Privateer Press's Summer Rampage Site. The house rules document, along with a quick reference rules sheet, can be found here.

WE WANT YOU

hello

We Buy Things

Here's a rundown of the main stuff we buy:

  • Silver Age Superhero Comics - While recent comics are all pretty enjoyable, we really only want the Silver Age Superhero stuff. The Silver Age is generally going to be comics published on or before 1977. It can sometimes be hard to figure out the date a comic was published, so a good rule of thumb is that the cover price should be $0.35 or less. And while we have nothing against comics not about superheroes, the stuff we can sell is Silver Age Superheroes.
  • Used Trade Paperbacks - If they're in decent condition, we'll probably pick them up. It's difficult to give any hard and fast guidelines for what we want, because it depends a lot on what we have in stock and what we can order.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Singles - We only buy rares, and I can give you even fewer guidelines about this. Mac is in charge of all of our singles sales, and he works on Thursday through Monday, so those are really the only days we can buy any cards.
  • Used Roleplaying Games - We'll look at pretty much any roleplaying games. We don't usually buy stuff that is currently in print, but if you've got the time to stop by, it's worth a shot. We're always interested in classic Dungeons and Dragons books.
  • Used Records - Thomas buys a lot of old jazz and blues records for his personal collection. Records are like CDs, except black and older. Kind of like the blues musicians Thomas likes!
  • Vintage Paperbacks and Pulps - I don't know anything about these. We might buy them, though!
Be sure to call before you come by to make sure we're not too busy to look at your stuff! We can also set up an appointment. Just call (910) 452-7828 or email fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.

plz help

If you produce a comic, or have some art you'd like to submit, or have written a review or anything else that you'd like to see in the newsletter, we're totally cool with that! Just email editor@fanboycomics.biz, and we'll put your submission in the newsletter if it's appropriate! Heck, you can even send in plain old comments about the newsletter, the store, or one of our events and we might publish them! We're really accommodating, it would seem. Seriously, write some reviews. We'll hook you up with free review copies of comics. How cool is that?

man this should have been the first one I did

sure, it's blatant pandering to everyone's love for the man with no name, but who cares

Annihilation: Conquest - Wraith #1

Writer: Javier Grillo-Marxuach
Artist: Kyle Hotz
Colorist: Gina Going-Raney
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $2.99

For those who don't know: Annihilation was a storyline last year where Negative Zone bad guys, lead by Annihilus, tried to take over the Marvel Universe. Cosmic type heroes stopped the "Annihilation Wave" but Quasar was killed in the ensuing battle. Now there is a new Quasar, the daughter of the old Captain Marvel, and only one Nova, cause there use to be a lot of them. Lots of planets have been destroyed. People are trying to make a new start. In the after math of the Annihilation War comes an attack by the Phalanx! They have completely over taken the Kree home world and, if unchecked, may take over the entire Marvel universe!

Barf.

Ok, Ok. I know I might be a hater sometimes, but the Phalanx! Come on. Whenever I see or hear anything about the Phalanx I think of the Borg, because they are the same damn thing. The Phalanx is a techno-organic species that use technology to create a hive mind of unification and adaptation. So does the Borg. And the Phalanx is even throwing around the term "assimilation" just like the Borg! Is this what we've come to? After decades of awesome science fiction stories, we have to rip off the Borg? A Borg rip-off is the single most dangerous threat to our world? Ugh.

All that being said, I like Wraith. There are things about this book that are working very well. Apparently, Wraith is a Kree. And Krees are a strange race, because they seem to have powers popping up all over the place. Captain Marvel was Kree. The Inhumans have Kree relations. Ms. Marvel has some Kree in her. [Editor's Note: ...if you know what I mean. *BOW CHICKA WOW WOW*] In the Marvel Universe, if you are Kree, you are awesome. So this Wraith dude, with the long hair and the side arms and a (no joke) space motorcycle, gets picked up by the Phalanx. Usually they just kill you and assimilate you with extreme ease. But Wraith has powers and abilities far beyond mortal Kree. He kicks their butts and destroys their ship and makes the Phalanx feel something they've never felt before. Fear.

What I like about the book is the strange air of mystery. You have no idea who this Wraith guy is, or what he wants. He is a perfect anti-hero. He kicks major Phalanx-booty. He also is a man with very few words. Saying less and kicking ass is the perfect way to be cool. Trust me, I do it all the time.

So should you buy this book? Eh. Yes and no. I think the Annihilation: Conquest story line is a good one. Even though the Phalanx is lame, I have this feeling that the Marvel Universe is becoming solidified. Before, the Marvel cosmic stuff either made no sense or little sense. You can tell by reading the Annihilation books that the Marvel editorial departments are trying to form a working frame. I would love to see a map of the Marvel Universe, showing where different planets are and how far they are from Earth. It would be a great frame of reference.

So, yes, buy this comic, but buy some of the other Annihilation: Conquest books too so you can see how they all tie in. The Nova tie-in is really good. I'm not sure if I like the dark direction these cosmic books are going, but it will be cool to follow its progress.

back when he was a GREEN green arrow HA HA HA HA OW PLEASE STOP HITTING ME

Green Arrow: Year One #1

Writer: Andy Diggle
Artist: Jock.
Color: David Baron
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

So, the story goes that Oliver Queen was on a deserted island. Because a brother has to eat, he learned how to hunt with a bow and arrow. Once some drug runners came to the island, he captured them and returned to civilization. He created the Green Arrow role to have some fun and thrills and to rebel against "the man". Am I close?

Apparently no one's ever given Green Arrow the proper Year One treatment until now. Why hunt with a bow and arrow? Wouldn't you just use a damn spear? And how did he get on the island in the first place? And what happened to his parents? This limited series aims to answer some of those questions. It starts off with Oliver Queen as a young man, hiring an ex-British navel officer to take him on adventures all around the world. Oliver is rich, thanks to his deceased parent, and he spends his fortunes on booze, women and adventuring. Yeah, I'd do the same thing, but young Ollie also likes to risk his life. His hired hand tells him, "There's something missing in you, Ollie, and until you figure out what it is, nothing-the booze, the women, all the pointless adrenaline junkie crap-none of it's ever going to be enough to fill the hole." Man, that is deep.

How does he end up on the island? I'm not telling. It's a bit of a twist and I'm not sure if I like it or not. I won't ruin it for you. What I do like is the cocky, carefree Oliver Queen, very green with no idea what he wants to do with his life. The older Green Arrow has a moral code that is very strict and tight and almost unquestionable. But this young Ollie doesn't have much of that yet. He has some idea of wanting a moral code, or an understanding that he can't party forever, but the best lessons learned are the ones you learn the hard way.

The art is a little bit on the super-simple side. Some of the pages seem to stand out, like the scene in the artic. The pure snow and the lack of any thing worth the detail makes the figures stand out. But whenever Oliver is in the city or in a car or on a boat, it is almost too simple. There isn't anything to really look at. And young Ollie doesn't look like Ollie. Maybe it's the lack of good, solid facial hair. But something is missing in the face and the body language that would make this young Ollie stand out. Maybe the artist, Jock, worked a bit too hard to make Ollie young. I'm sure we'll get back the familiar Ollie in the next issues.

I would have preferred if this story were told in a more non-linear way. We could have time jumps where we get Ollie on the island and he talks about how he got there. Even better, and more interesting, is why this story has never been really told. Is there a secret here? Something Oliver Queen has been hiding and is finally ready to reveal? We'll just have to wait and see, but so far it's good stuff and worth the read.

Notes From the Editor

So, did you guys read Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness #4?  If so, did you see this completely uncalled for slam against our hometown?

NOTHING INTERESTING HERE

Sure, that might look like a fairly innocent comic book panel, but wait until you see what happens when I add a series of unnecessarily complex callouts and zoom in on some stuff:

EXPOSED

That's right.  Apparently S.H.I.E.L.D. thinks we're "expendable" here in Wilmington.  Oh, really?  Well, S.H.I.E.L.D., I hope you have fun trying to stop the Zombie apocalypse without any TERRIBLE DRIVERS or POOR CITY PLANNING.  Maybe when the zombies are walking across logically-arranged roads not choked with traffic while cars stop for them at the crosswalks, you'll wish that they had to somehow figure out how to turn left on College Road at rush hour without someone running them over.
