Even More Awesome Silver/Bronze Age Stuff

Well, we've priced a few more old backissues this week, but not a whole lot.  Mainly what we added this week were old Action Comics issues.  Specifically, these:

Action Comics #304, 308, 310, 313-315, 317-326, 328-341, 357-370, 426

What do those issues look like?  Well, some of them look like this:

god what a bi--

"Oh no, they caught me mast--oh, right the Superman thing.  Yeah, that's bad too."

i can't help but think the gay agenda would be subtler than this

Purple with rage?  Really?

so it destroyed metropolis but not the camera they're looking through

Look, if I made a crazy nuclear hand lotion, putting it on Superman's hands would probably not be in the top ten ways I would use it.  I would use it to mast--NOTE TO SELF: CHANGE THIS TEXT BEFORE PUBLISHING

what if it was a puppy that robbed you of your powers, would you fight it to the death then?

That shield looks like it came from the set of The Price is Right.

this is maybe the dumbest thing superman has ever done

"If only there were some way for us to change the location of this net from here to where Clark is!  If only we could convert our potential energy to kinetic energy and somehow exert force on this net until it were in a different location!  Wait, I've got it!  We can move the net!  Amazing!  Quickly, team, let's move this net!  Hey, where'd everybody go?"

i don't understand

"Oh no, now the Dragon with a Red Cape is sitting down!  Run faster, everyone!  Oh dear, he's reading a book!  Flee!  Flee for your lives, fellow cowardly scientists!"

thank god he wrote private on his hobo shack or else people might have burst in and caught him--I DID IT AGAIN DANGIT

I honestly don't know which of those two images is more entertaining.

i like how people just threw their guns in the trash can

Some of you might find this ludicrous, but I honestly think that war would end if we would just write a law against it.

Oh, we still have a bunch of this stuff from before, just to refresh your memory:

Batman: #158-160, 162-167, 171, 173-184, 187, 197-201, 203, 206, 208, Giant Batman Annual #3, 7

Detective Comics: #317, 323, 328, 329, 333, 334, 339, 340, 341, 345, 345-348, 350, 351, 355, 370

The Atom: #1, 12-15, 19, 21-27, 35, 36

Green Lantern: #2, 4, 5

Adventure Comics: #313, 317, 320, 322-329, 331, 334-336, 338-345, 347, 348, 363-366, 369, 371, 372

a courageous work dedicated to promoting necrophilia awarenessBlack Adam: The Dark Age #1

Ever wonder what happened to Black Adam after 52?  Well, you should read that one issue of Countdown where he's hanging out in a museum for some reason.  Do you wonder what heppened to Black Adam after 52 but before that?  Well, Black Adam: The Dark Age is a miniseries about just that!  Follow depowered Teth-Adam in his quest to remember his magic word and also generally be surly!

ANSWERS ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DARK TOWER UNIVERSE, PARTICULARLY 'HOW CAN I SPEND MORE MONEY ON IT'The Dark Tower: Gunslinger's Guidebook

I don't know anything about this "Gunslinger" thing, so here's what a faceless marketing stooge has to say:

May luck rise to meet you, sai. Dark days have befallen the once powerful Affiliation. As the Good Man's revolutionaries continue their assault on the civilizations of the Inner Baronies, young Gunslinger Roland Deschain of Gilead and his loyal ka-tet embark eastward on an undercover mission to the distant Outer Barony of Mejis on behalf of the Affiliation. The Gunslinger Guidebook serves as your essential guide for Gilead to Mejis and all points in between - featuring profiles on the Big Coffin Hunters, Sheemie Ruiz, and Rhea of the Coos.

no guys you punch each other not the lantern geez louiseGreen Lantern #22

The Sinestro Corps War continues its galactic reign of terror and assonance in the newest issue of Green Lantern.  Hal Jordan is stuck in Qward, fighting the Sinestro Corps, and apparently there will be some sort of betrayal of the Guardians or something?  Also, the blurb seems to imply that there is a greater threat on the horizon that will be even worse than the Sinestro Corps?  I don't know, because DC stopped sending us preview issues a while ago.

the incredible hulk and his incredible friendsIncredible Hulk #109

World War Hulk continues with this great side story that--and I know this is crazy--expands on World War Hulk without being essential to understand the miniseries!  I know, after Civil War, you might find that hard to believe, but it's actually true!  In fact, World War Hulk has been really good about having the tie-ins be an expansion of the main story instead of additional issues of the miniseries that just have Amazing Spider-Man written on them instead of "Civil War" or whatever.

INTRIGUE!  SUSPENSE!  DIALOGUE!  MORE DIALOGUE!  MAYBE A LITTLE BIT OF ACTION!  BUT PROBABLY JUST MORE DIALOGUE!New Avengers #33

Did you thrill in the last issue of New Avengers when they talked a whole lot about the last issue?  Well, as enjoyable as that dialogue was--and I don't mean that to be as sarcastic as that sounds--I'm hoping that this New Avengers issue kicks it into high gear.  With the Hood entering the fray, that's a good sign that things will happen.  The Hood is a man of action.  I'm sure Bendis will find some way to write a ton of dialogue for him, though.

The Fanboy Spotlight
Hordes: Evolution Warlocks
oh man kromac is so coolKromac: $27.99
Saeryn: $9.99

Hordes: Evolution isn't out yet--look for that to ship at the end of August--but two of the Warcasters featured in the book are coming out this week!  Right now, we're not really stocking a lot of Hordes miniatures, so these are only available through special orders.  They're worth it, though.

Kromac the Ravenous is a new Circle Orboros warcaster, and if the rumors are to be believed, he is a beast, no pun intended.  Get ready for a crazy beast-man to jump over your house and put an axe in your head when you see Kromac on the field, because he can change into that axe-wielding monstrosity at any time.

Saeryn, Omen of Everblight is the other warcaster releasing this week, for the Legion of Everblight.  According to the forums, she's a pretty good caster for a ranged army, and has some nasty spells.  Othere than that, all I know is that her model looks really cool.

Legendary Encounters Pre-Painted Miniatures
HOLY CRAP GUYS I JUST DISCOVERED THE 'TWEEN' BUTTON$1.99-5.99

So, you want a miniature for your Dungeons and Dragons game, but you don't want to put it together, you don't want to paint it, and you want something specific.  Well, Reaper Miniatures has got your back!  They're offering a line of pre-painted plastic miniatures--and you know which one is in the pack you buy!  Right now, they've only put out some skeletons, orcs, and a few larger miniatures, but if these do well, we can expect (and hope!) to see more cheap, pre-painted gaming minis from Reaper in the future.

Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 HC
he's like a mainstream superhero, except he hasn't been ruined by the nineties$34.99

Invincible is probably the best superhero comic book in the universe.  At the very least, it's up there with some of the best of the best.  This is the third hardcover collection of Invincible, containing a ton of extras and issues #25-35 of the ongoing series.  There's really no reason for you not to read Invincible if you read any other superhero comic books, because it's like them, except not mangled by years under the Comics Code, creators of wildly varying talent levels, and--worst of all--the nineties.  Thanks to a surprising level of background detail by Robert Kirkman, this book feels like it's built on years of continuity, except without all the problems that entails.  So, if you havne't read Invincible, check out the first hardcover, secure in the knowledge that two more await you.

X-Men: Supernovas HC
mike carey - the worst individual issue writer ever, and the best trade paperback writer ever$34.99

Did you read the first 12 issues of Mike Carey's new X-Men run with Chris Bachalo?  Did you understand what ws going on in it?  Yeah, me neither.  Reading Mike Carey's intricate, complex stories one month at a time has never really been a very good idea.  Reading them all at once, though?  It doesn't really get much better.  The main thing I remember from reading these issues is that Rogue put together kind of a cool black-ops-ish X-Men team, and then things happened.  After that, it gets a little hazy.  Fortunately, this hardcover collection of X-Men issues #188-199 plus the annual will allow you to read all of the issues at once, without a month to forget all of the plot elements Carey introduced in the previous issue.

Justice League of America Series 1 Action Figures
FEATURING YOUR FAVORITE DC CHARACTER and black lightning arsenal and vixen???$19.99 Each

Brad Meltzer's relaunch of the Justice League was a watershed in comics.  It showed that a big team book doesn't need to be filled with the "most popular" superheroes in order to succeed.  No, it only needs to be half-filled in order to succeed, and everyone else can be the chumpiest chumps to ever chump a chump.  Sorry guys, I think Green Arrow is a little too powerful--maybe we should get one of the twenty sidekicks he's had.  Make it the one without AIDS.  Animal Man?  No, I'm afraid we need to get the Animal Man knockoff.  I'm not even going to say anything about Geo-Force, who kind of joined the team in between issues, maybe?  Here's all I have to say about Black Lightning:

OH NO YOU DI'INT

What's all this about action figures then?

The Warmachine Summer Rampage League is entering its final week, and here are the standings:

PLAYER POINTS FACTION
1 Cyrus Marriner 31 Cryx
2 SuperDave 20 Khador
3 Joe Nguyen 19 Menoth
4 Davin Madden 15 Cygnar
5 Preacher 9 Cygnar
6 Jackson Brantley 8 Skorne
7 Wayne Turner 7 Khador
8 Nick Truelove 2 Khador

SuperDave has only played two games.  They just happened to be 750 point games against two of the top three players, and he won both of them.  So, now he's in second place, and I feel a lot less secure in my lead.  Also, be sure to let us know what you want to do next for Warmachine!  I'm considering either a league or the Thornwood Theater of War Campaign from Apotheosis, so let me know.  A good place to let me know would be our new forums.

We're Looking For an Actual Employee to Hire

We still need all that other stuff that we ask for every single week, but we're also looking for a new employee to list E-Bay and help us out with other general stuff.  You need to know how to use E-Bay and how to use computers.  You also need to be over 18.  If you're interested, call us at (910) 452-7828, or e-mail us at fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.  NOTE: It is probably more professional to call us, and we'll definitely get that message before we get your email.

Oh, and as usual, if you produce a comic, or have some art you'd like to submit, or have written a review or anything else that you'd like to see in the newsletter, we're totally cool with that! Just email editor@fanboycomics.biz, and we'll put your submission in the newsletter if it's appropriate! Heck, you can even send in plain old comments about the newsletter, the store, or one of our events and we might publish them! We're really accommodating, it would seem. Seriously, write some reviews. We'll hook you up with free review copies of comics. How cool is that?

We Buy Stuff, and We Ship Stuff

Here's a rundown of the main stuff we buy:

  • Silver Age Superhero Comics - While recent comics are all pretty enjoyable, we really only want the Silver Age Superhero stuff. The Silver Age is generally going to be comics published on or before 1977. It can sometimes be hard to figure out the date a comic was published, so a good rule of thumb is that the cover price should be $0.35 or less. And while we have nothing against comics not about superheroes, the stuff we can sell is Silver Age Superheroes.
  • Used Trade Paperbacks - If they're in decent condition, we'll probably pick them up. It's difficult to give any hard and fast guidelines for what we want, because it depends a lot on what we have in stock and what we can order.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Singles - We only buy rares, and I can give you even fewer guidelines about this. Mac is in charge of all of our singles sales, and he works on Thursday through Monday, so those are really the only days we can buy any cards.
  • Used Roleplaying Games - We'll look at pretty much any roleplaying games. We don't usually buy stuff that is currently in print, but if you've got the time to stop by, it's worth a shot. We're always interested in classic Dungeons and Dragons books.
  • Used Records - Thomas buys a lot of old jazz and blues records for his personal collection. Records are like CDs, except black and older. Kind of like the blues musicians Thomas likes!
  • Vintage Paperbacks and Pulps - I don't know anything about these. We might buy them, though!
Be sure to call before you come by to make sure we're not too busy to look at your stuff! We can also set up an appointment. Just call (910) 452-7828 or email fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.

If there is anything you're looking for that we stock or can special order, we can ship it to you. We ship every Tuesday and if we have to special order the item it will take some extra time. $15.00 minimum order. We take Paypal, Money Orders, Checks and Credit Cards. Paypal is preferred. E-mail us.

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

The New Game Room Page and Forums

As part of this ongoing quest to communicate with you, the customer, we've expanded our level of web support. First up, we've got a whole new set of forums. We've had forums before, yes, and they got overrun by spambots. However, I have installed new forum software in the hopes that it isn't as stupidly vulnerable as phpBB2. We've got a lot of registered users who look like spambots, but they haven't posted yet, which is all that really matters. Please, talk about the store and how things are going with the store and what you would like to see and what-have-you. I'll try to actually post sometimes, because I could probably get away with saying it's part of my work.

Part two of this plan is the new Game Room page. I've completely overhauled it with a new schedule system, tournament results, league standings, and sort of a Fanboy Gamer News/Blog Thingamajig™. The thing is, though, I'll need the help of thegamers to make it work. I've got the whole system set up to be simple to use and require a minimal level of web proficiency to update, so any gamer who we feel like we can trust with the responsibility should be able to update it. If you're one of those gamers who thinks they would like to take advantage of the Game Room page to keep in contact with other local gamers, send me an email at gm (at) fanboycomics (dot) biz. The (at) and (dot) are @ and . respectively, I just have gotten a lot of spam to other email addresses I've posted on this site. Hopefully that will help the whole situation.

I'll talk it over with the other employees, and if we think you're a good candidate for updating the page, we'll send you back an e-mail with some information. Obviously, this means we need to already know you. Sorry, anonymous internet person! For some reason, we don't know if we can trust you!

i think this cover is a bit of a spoiler

Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special

Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Ethan Van Sciver
Colorist: Moose Bruman
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $4.99

Before I say anything about this book, let me try and describe what the hell is going on, more so for my mental well being than for your reading pleasure. It is easy for me to say that this book made my head hurt.

So Sinestro, a former Green Lantern that went rogue, was banished to the Antimatter universe by the Little Blue Green Lantern people. Once there, Sinestro "made" a yellow ring that used fear as power. See, Will power makes the Green Lanterns work, while Fear makes the Yellow rings work, while sheer Anger makes the Red rings work. I made the Anger thing up, but wouldn't that be bad ass? Anyway, Sinestro leaves the Antimatter universe and starts recruiting beings that can cause Fear to be in his Sinestro Corps. He also breaks the Cyborg Superman and the Superboy Prime out of Green Lantern jail and brings the Parallax being back into power by stuffing it into Kyle "Ion" Rayner. Oh, and the being that gives Sinestro his fear power is the Antimatter version of the Anti-Monitor. And there is no Easter bunny. Sorry to break it to you.

So, the good stuff. The comic is doing cosmic the way it should be done. I don't know why, but DC can handle cosmic events like no one else. I actually got very excited about this story as I was reading it. Marvel is firing on all their cylinders these days, but it feels to me like DC has some major plans in the works and have had major plans in the work for some time. Infinite Crisis lead to 52. 52 lead to Countdown and Countdown is supposed to be leading to the death of a major character and an "all ending" event. Yeah, I doubt everything will be ending, but things are pretty exciting in the DC cosmic stories room. But, Mac (the mean guy at Fanboy) and I had a discussion when I was in the shop. What if this Sinestro Corps storyline has nothing to do with Countdown? That would be a real bummer and I don't think it will happen. But it MIGHT happen. In the book, the little blue Green Lantern people talk about DC comics having 52 different dimensions, and that 51 of them are stacked on top of DC's earth. If the main earth is destroyed, all the other dimensions go with it. That made sense, and I'm glad they brought that up. And we all know, the Anti-Monitor wants to destroy the universe. So it feels like Countdown and the Sinestro Corps are tied together, and that this story will flare up into the mega-story line coming at the end of Countdown. All stuff to be excited about.

The bad? This story is very, very confusing and it would be very easy for a person to get lost in it. There are hundreds of characters in this book, and that is not a joke. Literally hundreds. There are a lot of deaths and a lot of characters yelling. I know a good amount about the Green Lanterns history, but I had to really flex my muscles to follow the story.

I also don't like how Kyle Rayner is being used as a villain or as a tool once again. I hate it. Kyle is one of my favorite characters and it really feels like DC is setting him up to die at the end of this. That would be a huge mistake. Kyle Rayner has proved his worth just like every other Green Lantern character, and I really hope DC stands by him. My instincts say they'll give him the axe and if they do, that will really suck.

I also don't like all the heavy hits this book dishes out. The return of Parallax, the Anti-Monitor, Cyborg Superman and Superboy Prime is just way, way, way too much. Superboy Prime is worth a book all his own. Its almost like DC just blew their entire load here and I'm not sure how they can follow up to it, except show the aftermath.

Basically, this book should have been a mini-series all its own, five issues or more. There is just too much jammed into here and it feels really rushed in places. It feels frantic. Geoff Johns does his best, but I think the editorial department is working overtime to compete with Marvel's storylines. Chill out guys. There is plenty of time to tell these stories.

On another note, Van Schiver's art is, once again, brillant. He needs to have his own book. He'd get a very loyal fan base if he spent some time on Superman or Wonder woman. I would love to see his take on a long, solid Batman run.

Should you buy this book? Yep. But be ready to read it six or seven times just so you can tell what's going on.

Price: $2.99
Publisher: DC Comics

The Metal men: Gold, Mercury, Platinum, Tin, Iron, Lead and Copper. Why there isn't a Steel Metal man or an Aluminum Metal man is beyond me. Anyway, they are back! Where were they? Who knows? I do a pretty good job keeping up with comic history, but the DC universe can get confusing at times. I think I'm doing good just knowing who the hell these guys are. They are funny and highly cartoonish, with very "Disney" like representation all around. Lead is the fat, dumb, loveable one. Platina is the sexy older robot while Copper is the cute, spunky chick. Tin is funny, Mercury thinks he's smarter than everyone else, Iron like to hit stuff and Gold is the leader. No one has different facets of their personality and all of them argue with each other until they need to work together to get the job done. Just like almost every team based book ever written. But there are a few things to enjoy here, and none of them have much to do with the Metal Men directly.

The first part of the book sets up back-story. 411AD a priest stole a totem of some kind from the ruins of Atlantis. This totem has some kind of abilities, but we never see what. Rock creatures kill the priest and retrieve the totem, only for it to be stolen by a guy from the future. Man, people from the future suck. Next, we see the Metal Men fight a very clichéd creature who turns technology into parts of itself, and the Metal Men use an EMP to kill it. Afterward, Men-in-Black like dudes steal the devices that control the Metal Men from Doctor Magnus, the Metal Men's creator. Flashback to the past, where we see the Metal Men in their first exposure to the world and Magnus' true passion, ending with a Magnus from the future plotting to stop the Metal Men from ever existing! Oh no!

The most engaging parts of the comic are the parts that have nothing to do with the current version of the Metal Men. Their past and creation appeals to me because I know little about it and because writer Duncan Rouleau brings up some very interesting and scientific questions about how elements work and how the Metal Men are able to do what they do. There is some idea of history in this book as well, making me think that, in order to understand anything about 52 or the Countdown story line, you should read any and everything that ties into it. I've stated in the past that I was worried about DC and they're "events" compared to Marvel and the Civil War. I think I shouldn't worry. DC is doing something very different than what Marvel is doing. Instead of reverting back to the past to dig up good stories, DC is respecting the past and respecting continuity. More than Marvel, DC's past is affecting their comic stories.

So, should you buy this book? Yes, maybe. The artwork is outstanding, and I think Rouleau should think about doing some other, higher profile books in the future. Why can't Robin look this good? But with the outstanding art will undoubtedly come some sort of delays. This book is jammed full of great writing and art, and I doubt Rouleau can keep it on schedule. If he does, I'll be very surprised. But it's definitely worth your attention and your hard earned cash.

  • HEDGE KNIGHT 2 SWORN SWORD #3 (OF 6)
  • INCREDIBLE HULK #109 WWH

World War Hulk continues with this great side story that--and I know this is crazy--expands on World War Hulk without being essential to understand the miniseries! I know, after Civil War, you might find that hard to believe, but it's actually true! In fact, World War Hulk has been really good about having the tie-ins be an expansion of the main story instead of additional issues of the miniseries that just have Amazing Spider-Man written on them instead of "Civil War" or whatever.

  • NEW AVENGERS #33
INTRIGUE! SUSPENSE!
