Mike Wieringo

A lot of you have probably heard by now that comics artist Mike Wieringo passed away on Sunday.  Although it predates my tenure here at Fanboy Comics, I know he had done a couple of signings for us before, and he always provided us with something for our charity auctions when we asked.  Thomas speaks highly of him, and says that he was a great guy: incredibly nice and humble for a man with his talent.  I'm not going to presume to expound on the career or personality of this man who I, personally, was unfamiliar with, but instead, I'm going to link to some of the reactions that have been posted across the web.  It's clear he was incredibly loved by much of the comics community, and I'm disappointed that he won't be able to attend another store event so I could have the chance to meet him.

Anyone interested in paying tribute to Mike is asked to support one of the following charities (copied and pasted from Newsarama):

THE HERO INITIATIVE- www.heroinitiative.org They have a direct link on their homepage for you to donate. Matt said that Mike loved the old guys that blazed the trail for him. He would love to know that he's helping out in a small way.

ASPCA- www.aspca.org Mike donated regularly to the ASPCA. Anyone who knew Mike knew how much he loved animals, especially his cat Charlie. The ASPCA is the national chapter. If you go to their homepage you can click on the "Memorial Giving" button near the lower right and follow the directions.

Here is a small sampling of remembrances of Mike Wieringo:

Cully Hammer Remembers Mike Wieringo on Newsarama

Reactions From Mark Waid, Todd Dezago, and Karl Kesel on Newsarama

That's all I've seen.  If you have any more that you think people should read, or any remembrances of Mike Wieringo, send them to editor@fanboycomics.biz and I'll include as many as I can in next week's newsletter.

The Fanboy Spotlight
Changeling: The Lost
me and my friends never considered playing the old changeling back in middle and high school because it was 'too gay'. we were fools (frowny face)$34.99

Finally, the most criminally overlooked game of the Old World of Darkness--with the possible exception of Wraith: The Oblivion--is getting a relaunch.  Changeling: The Dreaming was a fascinating, dark, intricate roleplaying game, but it never really attracted the following that it deserved.  Well, here's your chance to get in on the ground floor of the new Changeling, which re-imagines the whole concept from the ground-up.  No longer are characters themselves faeries, but rather they are humans abducted by the fae who have found their way back from their terrible abduction.  At their site, White Wolf has a lot of pretty words about it that I can't personally replicate without seeing the book, but I can just say I trust lead designer Ethan Skemp to put out a good game.  If you like the new World of Darkness, you should definitely check out this book.

Superman vs. Doomsday Collector's Set
relive the greatest moment in the speculator boom of the nineties$29.99

Does the upcoming Death of Superman animated feature intrigue you?  Are you interested in perhaps buying some action figures based on it?  Well, conveniently enough, there's a collector's set with a classic, out-of-print Superman action figure and a classic, out-of-print Doomsday action figure.  Oh, and also the Death of Superman trade paperback containing the story that this new animated DVD is based on!  What an excellent coincidence!

NewUniversal: And Everything Went White HC
take that jim shooter$19.99

In the late 80s, Marvel had an idea.  What if they made a whole bunch of comics nobody could possibly care about?  To their credit, Marvel took a gamble and created the New Universe, and blew away all previous comics failures with the sheer magnificence of it.  Then everybody forgot about it and went on to buy a ton of comics that were much worse in the nineties.

Flash forward to 2007, or 2006 or whenever this series came out:  Marvel brings back the New Universe, but this time much more focused and with Warren Ellis and Salvador Larroca at the creative helm.  And, as it turns out, it's awesome.  This hardcover collects the first six issues of this new, excellent series that brings a whole bunch of fascinating ideas to superhero comics, and feels fresh and new, in spite of the fact that it's a relaunch of a twenty-year-old idea.  Good job, Warren Ellis.

Yu-Gi-Oh: Tactical Evolution
YUGIOH HAS CHANGED ITS BODY TO DESTROY YOU$3.95 per pack

As usual, I have no idea what exactly is cool about this Yu-Gi-Oh set. However, here's some italicized text that does know!

Every aspect of the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG evolves with this new release. A new card type, a new card rarity, new foil technology, and even a new way to win the game are introduced in the biggest Yu-Gi-Oh set in three years!

Thanks, italicized text! You're a lifesaver!

you may notice that this is the preorder coupon with the word 'preorder' removed from it

Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. TP
iron man is like doctor doom except he doesn't talk in the third person...YET$14.99

Do you hate Iron Man after Civil War?  Well, if you do, all I have to say is boo hoo.  Iron Man may not be the most likable character in the Marvel universe, but he is, at this point, one of the most interesting.  If you haven't checked out the post-Civil-War Iron Man, then this trade paperback is the way to do it.  Tony Stark fills the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. director, well, not perfectly, but that's what makes the whole thing a fascinating story.  This trade even includes some issues from Marvel's history, like the first appearance of S.H.I.E.L.D., and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempt to take over Stark Industries!

Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk
i hope vecna is involved in some way because he is my favorite d and d npc ever$34.95

Hey, remember Greyhawk? Yeah, that was a pretty cool setting, I guess! It was the original "default" setting for D&D, but I don't know if it was a castle, or the name of the setting or something? I guess? Well, anyway, whatever Greyhawk was, you get to visit its ruins in this big ol' campaign book for characters of levels 8-13.

Well, the league is over. It went pretty well! Who won, you may ask? Well, thanks to my foolish boast against Joe this past Sunday, Davin did, netting himself a $25 gift certificate and the fancy winner's pin. Congratulations to Davin! Joe and SuperDave were runners up and both get a $10 gift certificate. Participants and winners can pick up their participation buttons and prizes at any time during store hours.

Be sure to keep an eye out for discussion about the next league at the Fanboy Comics Game Room Page or our Forums!

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

WARREN ELLIS is SPIDER JERUSALEM in 'HEY IS THERE ANY WAY FOR ME TO MAKE MORE TRANSMETROPOLITAN WITHOUT ACTUALLY WRITING MORE TRANSMETROPOLITAN? AND IF SO, CAN I REALLY REALLY PHONE IT IN? COOL THANKS'

Doktor Sleepless #1

Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Ivan Rodriguez
Publisher: Avatar
Price: $3.99

People don't give Warren Ellis enough credit. If you like the way comics are written in the here and now, you have to give two writers some props: Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis. I'm sure there are other people that did some work, but these two guys moved comics when comic sales were at their darkest. Do we quickly forget Preacher? Hands down, I believe that comic alone saved the industry. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. I'm never wrong. If a girl tells me she's pregnant by my baby I say, "no you're not" and it turns out she just had to fart. I'm awesome.

However, a case can be had that Warren Ellis is pushing himself a bit too thin. This book could be it. Doktor Sleepless is about a guy who fakes his own death, I think. He then begins a pirate radio show telling listeners that the status quo will always be the status quo. There will never be flying cars. Because of this, he promotes altering the body, called grinding, to give you a taste of the future that never comes. And then he shoots a symbol into the sky like Batman. I'm not kidding.

Warren Ellis does have some innovative gems in this book. I've been talking to a lot of my friends lately about how there won't ever be a future and it seems Warren Ellis agrees. Quick, besides the internet, name another invention that has changed the world in the last sixty years? Can't, can you? What happens to something that stays unchanging? It usually rots away and dies, and that is what is happening to the city in Doktor Sleepless. People are bored and have no hope, so they do a lot of drugs and put crap in their bodies. I would too.

But, besides that, there is nothing really new. We've heard all this before, either from Grant Morrison or from Ellis himself. I don't doubt at all that Ellis has a story to tell her, and that it will be a good one. But, he could have fit this into the "Black Sunday" comic easily. It makes sense and some of the concepts are the same. This "mad scientist" thing just doesn't feel very thought out to me. Its almost like it's a side note, an idea he had when he was working on something more interesting. It is also interesting to me that, in the back of Doktor Sleepless, Ellis promotes blogs and emails devoted to the comic book. He did this before with a few of his other projects. Is this a sign that he's extra devoted to the book? Or that he doesn't have faith in his readership that we will "get" what the hell he's talking about? I'm not sure. Either way, I do think you should grab this comic just to test it out. But I really don't see it being very appealing after the initial few pages of dialogue. For the die hard Ellis fans only here, kids.

FROM THE ASHES???  DID OSCAR WILDE WRITE THAT SUBTITLE

Army of Darkness: From the Ashes #1

Writer: Jame Kuhoric
Artist: Fernando Blanco
Colors: Ivan Nunes
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Price: $3.50

The "Army of Darkness" story has always, consistently confused the hell out of me. Don't get me wrong. I am a card-carrying fanboy and, as such, I have to like all of the Evil Dead movies. But, seriously, do any of them really make sense? Isn't the fact that they make no sense the reason we like them? It's not the plot we like or the dialogue or any of that hippy garbage. It's the stupidity of it all. Ash drives a modified Oldsmobile with blades flying around it in Army of Darkness. He swings around a chainsaw with one hand for God's sack. [Editor's Note: I am intentionally leaving in this typo, because I am a jerk.] There is no artistic value in these movies other than the artistic value of completely lacking artistic value. I think I just hurt my head.

Because of the strange and abstract nature of the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness success, Army of Darkness: From the Ashes suffers from more than a few problems. I'll fill you in before I start on my well-crafted rant. This comic takes place after the end of Army of Darkness, like an alternate reality of sorts. It also gives some love to the whole Marvel Zombies story, which people be loving like Sonic burgers. Ash returns to a world that has been completely overrun by the dead (or are they Deadites? Zombies? Both? Does it even matter?) He has to kill a few of them, because, uh, they want to kill him for some reason. We then get a flash to the reason the world went to hell. Evil Ash Prime! He's destroyed his enemies and has taken over the world. But, once you take over the world, you always become bored. I think that's a rule somewhere. Anyway, Ash is then met by some old/prophet like dude and they see the Necronomicon floating in the air and Evil Ash Prime has some sex and then there is something about needing four chosen souls to help Ash end the threat and did I mention the old man/prophet dude was blind? And to be continued!

Here is what I'm sick of. I'm sick of chosen ones. I'm sick of visions. I'm sick of prophets. I'm sick of blind old wise men and I'm sick of reluctant heroes. I'm sick of teams. I'm sick of books of the dead. And, god help me, I'm almost sick of zombies. Almost! There is still hope! But man, can people hack apart a good thing. Army of Darkness: From the Ashes is so packed full of clichés and boring writing that you don't really have to read the words. You can look at the panels and get it. There is nothing new here and nothing of interest at all. It does have the redeeming quality of appealing to Evil Dead fans, but I doubt that will be enough here. If you have the chance to work with the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness property, why make something boring or previously done? I mean, I can guess the story arc of this book. Ash gets some help, they kill a lot of zombies, big battle between Evil Ash and Good Ash, blah blah blah. Give me a break, or something better to read.

Notes From the Editor

Well, we're nearing the end of con season, and a whole bunch of huge announcments have dropped: Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones creating Final Crisis, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch on a book that is supposed to come out once a month, Rob Liefield still existing, and a great many other bombshells from all around comics.  However, there are a few announcements that "flew under the radar" and didn't get much press, but could have just as many ramifications for the industry.   Here's what you might have missed:

•At the DC Nation panel, Dan DiDio announced the creation of a new character, Magicos.  Born out of the massive energies of the first Crisis on Infinite Earths, Magicos is a mischevious wizard who "can alter the structure of reality at will."  While Magicos will not be seen or even mentioned in any DC Comics titles, from now on all continuity errors in DC books will be explained with "a wizard did it."

•Brian Michael Bendis has signed an exclusive contract with the concept of graphic storytelling.  From 2009 on, he will write every single comic book that has been and ever shall be written, with the authors of many comics being retroactively changed to 'Brian Michael Bendis."  When asked about the estimated 4,082 comics he would be writing, Bendis said he was "four months ahead of schedule," with 22,902 scripts "in the can."

•Every single Dynamite Comics announcement was also accompanied with an exclusive "Variant Announcement" available only to one out of every twenty panel attendees.  For example, after Nick Barucci announced that Dynamite Comics had gained rights to the "Man With No Name" franchise, he presented the Frank Cho, who announced, "Dynamite Comics has NOT lost the rights to the 'Woman With a Name' franchise."  This special Frank Cho Negative Variant Announcement is already going for $4.50 on eBay.

•Marvel Comics Announced that, from now on, they would just print all of their comics on "extra hundred dollar bills we have lying around."  Joe Quesada then disrobed and began rolling naked in a pile of money while screaming crude obscenities in Spanish.

•Dan DiDio 'accidentally' handed out a full-color, two-hundred-page hardcover with a special cover illustrated by Jim Lee that spoils every DC Comics storyline for the next twelve years.  "Ain't I a stinker?" he asked, and proceeded to punch an astonished Greg Rucka in the balls.

•Avatar Comics announced that they had signed Pulitzer-Prize-Winner Salman Rushdie to create an original series.  They then showed the cover to his new series "Zombie Breasts," which featured two teenagers being disembowled while preparing to have sex.

•Alan Moore went to every convention this Summer, but denied entry into all the hotels because he looks like a homeless person.

•Brian K. Vaughan will not be writing any more comics because he realizes what an insane amount of money he can make writing TV scripts.  Also, nobody in TV even knows who Grant Morrison or Brian Michael Bendis are, so Vaughan isn't known as "the bald writer who isn't Morrison or Bendis."

•Mark Millar announced his plans for 2009, a seven-issue limited Marvel Series called "Iron Man Punches a Four-Year-Old Girl in the Face and Tells Her She Will Never Be Pretty," with artist Simone Bianchi.  There was a huge outcry by fans who attended the panel, who moaned and cried about how this would ruin everything.  Advanced orders are already total over 100,000 comics, a new record for an unsolicited comic book with no material actually yet created.

•John Byrne announced to his empty room that he would love to go to a convention, "if anyone is interested."

If there's a book I never thought would actually be straight out telling you to buy because of how good it is, it's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Sort of the yin to X-Factor's yang, it shows the surprising duality of Peter David: he's one of the best writers at Marvel (X-Factor) and one of the worst (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) at the same time. However, if he wanted your lasting impression of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to not be "a wretched mess of half-baked ideas," then this is the issue to end his run on. Peter Parker talks to J. Jonah Jameson for the first time since revealing his identity--and Peter David hits every note pitch-perfect in a great character-driven piece that also has a great punchline on the last page.
