The New Comics Will Be Coming in on Thursday This Week

This is because of Labor Day, the holiday honoring bad fashion jokes.

However, we will be having some awesome specials on Wednesday so those who make their weekly trip aren't disappointed!  The specials will be very similar to these specials that we are running today:

  • 50% off All Marvel Back Issues
  • 50% off Select Action Figures
  • 25% off all Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon Decks
  • All T-Shirts Reduced to $12.00 or Two for $20.00
  • 20% off D&D Minis and Warmachine
  • Buy One Comic Set, Get One Half-Off
  • 20% off all DC, Vertigo, and Wildstorm Trade Paperbacks
  • All Dollar Boxes Reduced to $.50
As a clue for what tomorrow's sepcials will be like, here's a hint: they will be like those specials, but backwards.  IF YOU CAN IMAGINE SUCH A THING.

We'll also be getting in the Pokemon trading figure game when it comes in later this month.  They're adorable.

It is on.  We had the first few games of our Warmachine Discountstruction league this past Sunday, and people are racking up the points.  Once this week ends, I'll start to post standings--but everyone who hasn't needs to come out and play!  It's a good way to save some money when you're filling out your Hordes army for the upcoming Hordes: Evolution Stampede!

The Fanboy Spotlight
DC HeroClix: Justice League
i cropped out the box covers with aquaman and green arrow and deadman and lobo - can you guess why?Boosters: $9.99 Each
Brick of 10 Boosters: $89.99

WizKids' pseudo-relaunch of HeroClix that began with the Avengers set now makes its way to the DC side of the aisle with Justice League.  If Avengers was any indication, this set will have some cool figures of some of the best characters DC has to offer--but odds are, if you're interested in buying this stuff, you know more about it than I do.  So, just consider this a friendly reminder that this set is out this week.

Adam Hughes Posters (Featuring Pretty Ladies)
finally, a comic book artist who's willing to tackle the unpopular subject of hot women in tight, revealing outfits$7.99 Each

Adam Hughes is known for drawing the pretty lady every once in a while.  Do you like the pretty ladies?  Well, if you do, here are posters of aforementioned pretty ladies: particularly Catwoman, Power Girl, Supergirl, and Zatanna.  If you like any of those characters, or if you like cheesecake art, and especially if you like both, these are the posters for you.

Hellboy Vol. 7: The Troll Witch and Others TP
HELLBOY PART VII - HELLBOY GOES TO HELL, BOYEE (featuring flava flav)$17.95

Look, I have no idea what Hellboy stuff is in this trade paperback.  I'll let you know this, though: it doesn't matter.  My experience with Hellboy has been this: if it has the Hellboy logo and Mike Mignola's name on it, it's good.  That's more or less all there is to it.

Classic Battletech Box Set
this game is really fun once you memorize all the tables$39.99

Woah, it's a miniatures game where you have everything you need to play in a forty dollar box set!  What is this, the early nineties?  In this box set you get rules, dice, miniatures, and a whole lot of bonus stuff to assist ease of play and flesh out the setting--and you're ready to play.  Not only that, but Battletech offers a wealth of customization options, and there's even a free program online that you can use to make your own 'mechs with a few mouse clicks.  Buy this box, and, before long, you'll have your light mech with a ridiculous number of lasers up against your friend's incredibly stupid and slow heavy with a ridiculous amount of armor.  That's the fun of Battletech--making incredibly stupid things and then doing stuff with them, and this box set is all you need to buy.

Sword of the Atom TP
more like pushpin of the atom$19.99

Hey, I guess DC finally figured out that, heck, if they're going to release trade paperbacks for new crap like the one year later Nightwing story arc, they might as well put out some trade paperback collections of some of their classic comics that aren't really readily availalble.  Which is good.  I want to read some of these classic runs that I've only heard about, like this Gil Kane Atom stuff, and the upcoming collection of Denny O'Neill's Question.  Hopefully, we'll see this sort of stuff sell well, and it'll get easier and easier to find some of the more iconic writers who were writing before everything was collected in trade paperbacks.

Magic: The Gathering Mini-Masters Tournaments Every Thursday!

What are these "Mini-Masters" tournaments?

The answer is simplicity itself: they are tournaments where each player buys a pack and builds a deck with that one pack! It's a fun, quick way to get a little extra bonus with a booster pack that you were probably going to buy any day! If you win your first round game, you get another pack for free to play in the next round and the round after that. The winner gets one pack for every two players, and the runner-up gets one pack for every four player.

That's a lot of free packs, for little pay-in!

E-Bay Spotlight

What sort of awesome stuff does Fanboy Comics have on the Electronic Bay or "E-Bay," as the youth call it? Well, here's a sampling of the sort of stuff you might see on our store. Don't forget, if you buy any of this stuff, you can pick it up at the store and not pay shipping!  Let's see how our new E-Bay lister is doing:

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

The Last Fantastic Four Story

Writer: Stan Lee
Artist: John Romita, Jr.
Inker: Scott Hanna
Publisher: Make Mine Marvel!
Price: $4.99

I can't hate on Stan Lee. Something about even wanting to do it feels wrong to me. It would be like walking up to Steve Jobs or Bill Gates and saying computers suck. That's a bold faced lie. There can be nothing but love and lust that flows through Stan Lee's pen. Done and done.

The Last Fantastic Four Story does have a few pitfalls. But, along with those pitfalls come some true moments of awesomeness. Here's the rundown. The Fantastic Four come back from a trip exhausted and feeling under-appreciated. After years of service, they aren't exactly rich. Meanwhile, the Cosmic Tribunal, a collection of Alien races, decide that Earth is just too primitive and mean and make plans to destroy and the human race with it. Thus, they send the Adjudicator! He's as big as a thousand mountains, and decries that Earth has a week before the Tribunal kills everyone. So, of course, the heroes ban together and hit it. [Editor's Note: Maybe I just have a dirty mind, but this seems like a poor choice of pronoun.] And then the military shows up and, uh, hits it. [Editor's Note: Again!] And then Dr. Doom arrives and, uh, well, hits it. [Editor's Note: Oh, come on.] And then more people come and hit it. [Editor's Note: There's a She-Hulk joke to be made here, but I just can't bring myself to be that cruel to poor Jen.] And then I took a nap. Then I woke up and Reed Richards contacts the Silver Surfer! And then the Surfer leaves and gets Galactus! And then Galactus tells Richards the one thing that might save all of Earth. What is it? I won't ruin it for you.

It's funny how good this book would have been thirty, no, forty years ago. Sorry to say, Stan Lee's writing style has aged, but he still can make you get a chill down the spine. My favorite moment is when the Silver Surfer shows up. There is something about the way the Surfer talks, the way he discusses the plan with Richards I can't describe. It just feels right, and it makes me remember how so many other writers got it wrong. Having a being like the Adjudicator is perfect Stan Lee. Black Bolt's attack is pure genius and no one writes a grumpier Ben Grimm. Romita's pencils are classic. It could be the best work I've seen of his in a very long time. I give a lot of that credit to Scott Hanna. He's an inker and a half. Good stuff.

However, some parts of the book are just wrong. First, according to all the comics I remember, the Cosmic Tribunal isn't a group of beings. It's just one dude, that wears a sheet over two of his faces. No women do anything in the book, either. Sue Richards has one seen where she is using her powers. One. The women mostly look scared. And there aren't any black people in the book anywhere, either. I'm just saying! There isn't! Unless you count a panel with Storm and Black Panther in a back row and Galactus, who everyone knows is the most powerful African American in comics. And what does Galoot mean? [Editor's Note: It means Stan Lee is old.] Those might seem small, but they are noticeable--but not enough to put any readers off.

The Last Fantastic Four story is a most have for comic fans. It feels like the last adventure Stan Lee would write for them. He might be getting old, but he's still got the stuff. Excelsior!

i don't know about that!

The Mice Templar #1

Writer: Bryan J. L. Glass
Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
Colors: Will Quintana
Publisher: Image
Price: $3.99

This must be the season for mouse-focused attack comics. First the Mouse Guard and now Mice Templar, but I'm sure this isn't like the Xbox 360 v. PS3 battle that I follow like a mouse following cheese. These two books are very different and equally appeasing, and you really can't get enough mice with swords. What would you do if you opened your closet to see a bunch of mice with swords heading right at you? I think I'd take a picture and put it up on Myspace. Then step on them.

Mice Templar begins the story with an older mouse telling his little charges about the Mice Templar, a group of powerful warriors that were respected and revered until they turned on each other. After their little civil war, the remaining Templar warriors went into hiding, with people living in fear of even mentioning their names. The little mouse children take a lot of the story to heart, hoping to learn how to become the heroes they've heard of. Little Leito and Karic play around, wishing for adventure, but when adventure comes in the form of raiding Rat Raiders, nothing but misery and death can be seen in the shimmering darkness. However, one of the elders was a Templar in hiding, and he refused to go down without a fight.

This book is great on multiple levels. Glass's writing is wonderful and highly emotional. The scenes at the end when the mice-families are trying to survive amidst overwhelming chaos will make you nervous and fearful for these characters. He also leaves certain things vague that should be vague, while brightly exposing others. I won't ruin it for you, but there is a very good reason why the Mouse Templar stayed a closely guard secret. There are some places that seem a bit over done, like a scene where Karic is told he is the "chosen one" by a bunch of fish. Why there has to be a damn chosen one is anybodies guess, but I won't rant about that right now. By the end of the book, you are practically begging for someone to save these poor guys.

Oeming's art is what really sells the book. It's so simple, yet so amazingly complex, with perfect panel design and great timing. Each page leads to the next wonderfully. The battle scene at the end of the book is especially good, making the entire scene seem frantic and hyper-emotional. I truly great job.

The only complaint I have about this book is that it goes on for a bit too long. This is not a quick read at all. You better have at least a solid hour to absorb it all. I'm not sure how the story could have been redesigned to make it a quicker read, or even if it needs to be. But I had to come back and forth to it several times. Once I was finished, however, I was totally satisfied and ready for the next issue, which is always a sign of a great piece of art. Pick this up.

Countdown to Adventure #1

Writers: Adam Beechen and Justin Gray
Artist: Julio Ferreira and Fabrizio Fiorentino
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99

So, apparently there are two books that you have to read to understand anything in the DC Universe. 52 and Countdown. Failure to read 52 or Countdown will result in you having absolutely no idea what is going on in any book you read about the DC Universe. Further more, the stories in 52 and Countdown seem so incredibly insanely complicated that you probably won't understand anything about it and you will become very frustrated and throw something out your window. I threw an old cell-phone. It didn't do too much damage.

Ok, let me try my best to understand this. 52 was the mini-series that followed Infinite Crisis. Infinite Crisis was the mini-series that basically followed up Crisis on Infinite Earths. Crisis on Infinite Earths is the mini-series you can blame for having to read a billion books every summer. 52 was about the year when Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman took a break and Booster Gold and his loser friends [Editor's Note: I'm just going to ignore this.] found out that there was a Multi-verse with, guess what, 52 different Universes. Countdown is about, well, I'm not sure. Something. And it is counting down to the Final Crisis that is suppose to restructure the DC Universe, because, after a billion cross-overs and story lines, it is really confusing. Oh, and at the end of Final Crisis, someone is supposed to die. I'm not sure whom, but I bet they come back a few months later during the next crisis. I hope they call it Crisis on Infinitely Crisis Earths that Countdown to 52 Infinite Final Crisis War: Special Edition Foil Cover Remix Prologue. Ugh.

Anyway, Countdown to Adventure has three stories jammed into it. One about Adam Strange, one about Animal Man and Starfire and one about newbie Forerunner. Adam Strange tries to relax after his fighting in the Rann/Thanagar war, only to find that his bosses have replaced him with an actor from Earth. Animal Man tries to go back to normality after his adventures in space, only to have his wife get mad at him for wanting Starfire to become a new roommate. Forerunner recalls stories about her past while the Monarch (who use to be Captain Atom) explains her future.

It's really cool to see Adam Strange up and kicking butt again. He has to be one of the most underused characters the DCU has right now. But the story they use him for seems a bit too contrived. Somebody old and knowledgeable is replaced by someone newer and shinier and bolder. Ok, so, the story will end with the world needing Strange back even though they rejected him. And Starfire staying with Animal Man's family seems really cool and interesting, especially after she loses her powers. But, I'm sure her being there will ruin Animal Man's marriage and she'll need to get her powers back for some emergency. And Forerunner? Who the $#@% is Forerunner?

The book is banking on the idea that fans will want to get everything they can to understand what Final Crisis might be about. Tying a book to an event-comic that hasn't even come out yet is very clever and it will work. DC will make tons of cash from this. But I think that one of the problems with DC right now is that the stories are way too big and ambitious, and readers have to read every single book on the market to understand any of it. Yes, Marvel is guilty of this too. But, if you read one piece of a Marvel Event, you won't feel like you are missing anything. I promise you there will be things going on in Final Crisis that will be missed if you don't read all the books associated with it. It happened with Infinite Crisis and it'll happen with Final Crisis. These stories are just too big to get your head around. However, if you follow Countdown and 52 and read the new, critically acclaimed Booster Gold comic, then you should pick this one to. For completists only.

Notes From the Editor

So, anyway, I recently heard about Todd McFarlane bringing his "edgy" take on Oz to the silver screen.  I immediately filed it away in the part of my brain where I file information that makes me want to kill Todd McFarlane--right now, it's up to more or less a whole hemisphere.  Then, while I was flipping through the latest previews, I stumbled upon Todd McFarlane's newest "edgy" re-imagining of a timeless classic.  This time, Todd sets his sights on Christmas.

That's right, Todd McFarlane must have had the employees at Todd McFarlane's Scary Company, LTD* working overtime to come up with what he was going to edgerize next.  I imagine the list went something like this:

  • Spring (Oh no, here come the dreaded APRIL SHOWERS OF KNIVES)
  • Plumbing (Imagine a plumber with a sword and a snake--THAT'S AN ACTUAL SNAKE!)
  • The Arthur Series of Children's Books (They will have FANGS!  And BLOOD!)

Finally, they came up with Christmas.  Wow, what could Todd possibly do to edgify Santa Claus?  Why, this:

SCARY OOOH

Wow, that takes a lot of creativity, there.  I imagine Todd McFarlane sitting in his home, trying desperately to think of a way to make Santa Claus "edgy."  He's surrounded by crumpled-up pieces of paper and broken pencils, and he is visibly sweating.  Suddenly, inspiration strikes!  He lifts his head from where it's buried in his arms on his desk and grabs a pencil and the first available sheet of paper and quickly writes down, "GAS MASK."  Todd doesn't stop there, though.  He takes it one step further--and this is where he separates himself from a fourteen year-old drawing genitals on Abraham Lincoln in a history textbook--and writes "CLAWS!"  Then, in a flash of brilliance, he underlines that not once, but twice.  Finally, he puts it in an envelope and has someone design the figure for him and put his name on it.

Todd looks at the next item on his list: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, sans all the copyrighted aspects of the name.  He immediately writes down "FANGS," but the block sets in again.  How long will it be before he can work out another masterpiece?  What could make Rudolph the--I mean, Reindeer Rudy, incredibly edgy?  Could it be, an axe?

OH MAN WHAT IF HE'S TOTALLY WRAPPED IN CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS THERE IS NOTHING EDGIER THAN CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS

Only time will tell.

*Thanks to Nick for coming up with this joke.

in this issue, a plot device allows guest artists to draw pretty picturesDaredevil #100

What does it take to get an ongoing series to its 100th issue in these modern times?  Well, a crap-ton of Eisner awards certainly helps.  Brian Michael Bendis made Daredevil cool, and now Ed Brubaker is carrying on the tradition with issue 100, featuring an all-star lineup of artists including John Romita Sr., Gene Colan, Lee Bermejo, Alex Maleev and Marko Djurdjevic among others.  Not only that, but the story's pretty awesome as well.  If you haven't been reading Daredevil, there won't be a better time to start for a while.

what would you do if you had ONE MORE DAY?????? i would probably play video gamesAmazing Spider-Man #544: "One More Day, Part 1"

Joe Quesada has been saying for years that he doesn't like the idea of Peter Parker and Mary Jane being together, because then Spider-Man writers have to figure out whole new ways for him to suffer, and that's just too damn hard.  Anyway, everything Joey Q (his early-nineties rap name) has said about this event implies that it splits up Pete and MJ, and he's frequently stated that he wants to split up the couple, and now he's drawing this big extra-special Spider-Man event, so you know what that means:

They're staying together.  Because Joe Quesada is a liar.  Or maybe not.  Hey, at least Quesada's filthy lying ways are keeping us guessing, I suppose!

HE IS...THE CHOSEN ONE! HARK; LET THE EARS OF MAN REJOICE AT IT, THE SOUND OF HIS VOICECaptain America: The Chosen #1 of 6

I've got to say, one of the quietest pleasant surprises of the past year has been the relaunch of the Marvel Knights imprint.  Before, it was kind of lurking in the no-man's land between mainstream Marvel and their MAX line, and as the main universe got darker, the distinction between the two kind of dissolved.  However, instead of abandoning the Marvel Knights imprint altogether, they've brought it back as a way for creators to tell brief, iconic stories about some of Marvel's most popular characters without worrying about the massive amount of current continuity bogging the whole thing down.  So far, all of the comics have been, at the very least, incredibly interesting: Spider-Man: Reign was an excellent Dark Knight Returns homage with its own unique identity, Silver Surfer: Requiem is one of the best comics to come out this past year, and Daredevil: Battlin' Jack Murdock has been an excellent character study.  I'm expecting Captain America: The Chosen to be as good as all of these and then some.  Those are high expectations, but between the writing of Rambo creator (not the movie, the book) David Morell and the amazing pencils of Mitch Breitweiser, I think they can do it.

vampires are the indie-est of all undead30 Days of Night: Red Snow #1

For some reason, I've never read 30 Days of Night.  I like Vampires, I like Ben Templesmith, and I guess I'm largely indifferent towards Alaska, but have no particular prejudices against the state.  Yet, I guess my general dislike of horror books has kept me from picking up what is, by all accounts, an excellent book.  Well, that's probably going to change, because now they've added in the one thing every book is missing: Nazis getting the crap killed out of them.  I can't say I've ever specifically wanted to read a book about Vampires preying on Eastern Front soldiers during World War II, but now that I've heard the concept, I'm thinking, "Where has this comic been all my life?"
