Notice: The date for the final Starro Tournament on this flyer was incorrect. The tournament will take place on Saturday, October 20th and not Sunday, October 21st as previously announced. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Coming to Fanboy Comics on Sunday, October 21st is a Hordes: Evolution Stampede Event! In this fairly unique Hordes Tournament Format, half of the players set up as defenders, and half set up as attackers. If the defender wins their game, they stay at the table and defend against a new opponent, but if the attacker wins, he sets up as the defender and starts defending. The player with the most successful defenses wins the tournament and gets one of the fancy pins! The full rules document is available at Privateer Press's website.
If you don't have 500 points of Hordes yet, then you should definitely get involved in our Warmachine/Hordes Discountstruction League! We just entered the third week, and there's still time to get in some games and accrue some discounts in order to save a little money when you do put that Hordes army together. The Discountstruction rules are available at our game room page, as are the latest standings, whenever I actually total them. (Sorry)
Also, our Hordes stock is a little limited right now, but we do weekly special orders, so if you don't see it, we can probably order it.
Hunter Combat Pack: $24.99I don't know if you've heard of the game Halo--it was kind of a cult hit, and was successful enough to garner a sequel. There might be a third, but news about it is a little hard to come by. Anyway, Wizkids saw a brand that they thought had the potential to be a big hit, and took a risk to make Halo ActionClix. Is the market there for Halo-related-merchandise? Only time will tell. If you're interested, you can pick up the Hunter Combat Pack, which I guess is science fiction talk for "Starter Pack," or the Game Pack, which I guess is science fiction for "Booster Pack."

After months of rumors and speculation, it's finally here: the new Chaos Space Marines Codex. You definitely need this so you can go and bitch about every single part of it on forums online. Ha ha, I'm just kidding. I'm sure you've been bitching for months now. However, you can now bitch with actual information at your disposal instead of crazy half-baked theories! Truly, internet is a wonderful thing.
Oh, they're also shipping a few new box sets for Chaos, too. The sprues look awesome. You should check them out.

Justice League is about superheroes together as sort of a global task force, but the Justice Society is about superheroes as a family. With all the tragic histories and orphans and what-not, the JSA is about providing a place where people with powers can belong. Oh, and also saving the world. They do that on occasion, too. Geoff Johns returns to the team that more or less propelled him to comics superstardom and gives you a fresh new Justice Society that's all about bringing the world better heroes, and some great characters. This is the JSA at their best, and I hope to see this new series last as long as the previous.

I'm pretty sure I've talked about Ed Brubaker and his run on Captain America before. Well, if you missed all of that, here are the bullet points:

I'm probably sounding like a broken record by repeating this every time a 52 trade paperback comes out, but you really should read 52. These trades are an awesome way to do so, and include a ton of cool extras. I don't know how much clearer I can make it. The whole thing is pretty danged awesome, and this volume is where the whole thing really starts to kick into high gear. Seriously, 52 is worth it.
$29.99
Have you ever thought to yourself, "Sure, my Khador army is pretty good, but it doesn't have any way to automatically do 20 points of damage to any warrior model on the table"? Well, if so, you're in luck. These Kayazy Assassin Allies (which means they'll work for Khador and certain Mercenary contracts) have an awesome ability that allows them to do auto damage to models based on how many other Kayazy are in melee with them. They're coming out this week, too.

Wow, what a surprise. Marvel's putting out more merchandise based on the ludicrously popular Marvel Zombies franchise. An action figure of Spider-Man? As a zombie? What will they think of next?!?
Truly, I am shocked. So shocked, I can't even remember to hide my constant sarcasm. Oh well.
$49.99
Yeah, I guess they figured that the Dragons just weren't enough on their own for these D&D Minis Icons, so they'd throw in two of the most popular characters in all of Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, not only do you get Icingdeath, but you also get Drizzt and Wulfgar. Oh, and you also get a scenario, epic stat cards for Drizzt and Wulfgar, and a battle map. Almost an embarassment of riches.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where they are or anything because I don't think they gave us any information. However, they have an awesome floor! Check this out:

However, since we have such a low opinion of our customers, we figure we can edutain them about the alphabet. Each Tuesday, starting September 25th, we'll be offering a 50% discount on different sections of our back issue boxes, starting with the letters A through D--letters which include Action Comics, the Avengers, Batman, Captain America, and Detective Comics. Then we'll move on to another section of our back issues, which just happens to correspond to the next four letters of the alphabet! Can you guess what they are? The answer may surprise you!
Also, you are welcome to sign up as our friend on MySpace and get a sneak peek of each week's Tuesday Specials! Friendship finally has some sort of upside!

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

Writer: John Ostrander
Penciler: Javi Pina
Inker: Robin Riggs
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
I feel terrible whenever I say a book is bad. I don't like it. Even if it seems like I do like it, or if I say I like it, I don't. Deep down in this bleak heart, I want nothing more than for every comic to be good and worth reading. And it saddens my heart when I read something that I'd gladly use as toilet paper.
And I'm a respecter of history. I respect tradition. I know the work that John Ostrander did. I understand how awesome the original Suicide Squad was. I know all about that. I love tradition and history. I can't get enough of it. But, just because something was good back when, does not mean that it is good now. I have this funny feeling in the back of my head that Cyrus is going to disagree. Do you know what its like to worry about Cyrus disagreeing with you all the time? It's not fun. I lose sleep.
Suicide Squad: From the Ashes has a good heart. Rick Flag is missing. Worse, he's alive and he's missing. Even stranger, the big whigs want him back and its up to Amanda Waller and her squad to go get him. Roster call! Bronze Tiger! Captain Boomerang! Deadshot! Nightshade! They are going to be up against some old friends by the name of the People's Heroes! They are the roughest, toughest Russians in the world and they are ready for some payback! Big time!
I could start ranting about all the clichés in the book. I really could. I could also talk about how DC managed to rip-off one of their own characters. Deadshot? Deathstroke? Both have one eye. Both kill people. [Editor's Note: I wouldn't normally point this out, but since Jarvis is blatantly baiting me with that introduction, I feel I should add that it must have been pretty hard for Bob Kane to travel thirty years into the future to rip off Marv Wolfman.] I could talk about how the Russians sound and act like Russians, which is worse than having Nazis as the bad guy, even though there is mention of Nazis, and I could talk about how the only thing this book doesn't have are dinosaurs, even though there are dinosaurs on the last page. And I could talk about how bad the art is, which is probably some of the worst art I've seen in years. I could talk about all of that and make fun of it, but I don't see the point. It's just bad. And it's for sale, which is even worse.
Fans of the old Suicide Squad books will probably like this. It starts off where the old books left off. Just because someone likes something doesn't mean its good. People eat salt and vinegar chips all the time and those things taste terrible. This book will appeal to somebody. Not many. If you are looking for a comic that deals with villains being heroes, for God's sake read the Thunderbolts. Warren Ellis is doing better stuff with that book and crazy Russians are nowhere involved. Maybe the book is called Suicide Squad because the Squad will commit suicide at the end of the story arc. That would be cool. Unoriginal. But cool.

Am I the only one really confused by the whole Wonder-Woman thing? So, she was molded out of clay, right? And then she came here to man's world to show us how stupid we are. Then she joined the JSA? No, that was her mother. Wonder Woman joined the JLA. And she died once but came back. And Donna Troy is her daughter? No, Donna Troy is her sister, right? I think. Maybe. And there was some big war where the Amazons tried to attack America or the world, right? Am I close? Is there such a thing as an Invisible plane? Donna Troy is in the New Titans, I mean the Titans, I mean the Teen Titans, right? No, that's Wonder girl. Who the $%&# is Wonder Girl?
Man, comics can get confusing really quickly. Especially when publishers re-invent the universe every year. Cough, DC, cough. But good story telling can be achieved if you look at a character and ask some hard questions. What do they want? What is stopping them from getting it? J. Torres does this with Wonder Girl. This book surprised me on multiple levels and has the potential of going much further than a simple mini-series.
The Amazons waged war with Man's world. But when it was all over, the Amazons abandoned Wonder Girl and left a lot of crap behind. Hydra Eggs, pet fire breathing lions, flying horses, stuff like that. With no one around to help her, Cassandra is cleaning up the Amazon's mess on her own, and rejecting her fellow Titan's help. She's angry. She's mad that she's on the run. She's angry that her mother has to hide. She's mad that she can't have a normal life. The book doesn't tell us any of this. The reader has to infer this information. That is amazingly tight writing. You don't see characterization like that in novels. I'm impressed by J. Torres' abilities.
The art works too. At first I didn't like it. It was a little too much like Robin, a little too kiddy, a little too Batman-animated-adventure like. But Greene pulls off some incredible facial expressions. All the emotion and desire can be read on the face, and that saves the writer the hassle. The art feels right for the book, which is important and something that many publishers tend to forget.
My one peeve is that Wonder girl is acting a bit too much like Wonder Woman in the comic. A strong female character doesn't have to be a mean or overly aggressive. There is a middle ground. I hope that, as the series progresses, we get to see this movement and see how Wonder Girl becomes her own character and not just another sidekick. This book really surprised me. I thought I was going to have to bust out the hate on it. Instead, I got a pretty decent read. See? It isn't that hard to make me happy.

Deep in space, a civil war is taking place. A great Empire has been split in two. On one side, you have a young and new leader who has little confidence but is being called a savior. He leads a rag-tag group of heroes to fight the Evil Empire. Two of his crew are in love, but refuse to admit it. The Emperor will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, even though his people hate him. The fate of the galaxy hinges on the outcome of the battle.
No, that was not the plot of X-men: Emperor Vulcan. It was the plot of Star Wars! The original Star Wars! That was made over thirty years ago! And people still can't make anything new! I'm so sick of this. When will this end? How many times can we have a stupid comic or a stupid movie about rebels and evil, crazy emperors? How many? Come on, somebody give me a number. Ten? Fifty? I swear, if I read one more comic that is so retardedly unoriginal, I am going to...I don't know, hit something. Hit something really hard!
This book is crap. Don't buy it. Here's why. You have Havok trying to lead a stupid rebellion against Vulcan, his brother and the new Emperor of the Shi'ar empire. Yeah, there are three Summers brothers. Yeah, I don't care either. And Polaris is next to him being supportive and then you have a bunch of aliens doing stuff and you have space ships and people yelling and shooting stuff. The only cool thing about the comic is the ending, when another species attacks the Shi'ar. So there might be something cool with that, but I doubt it. Here, to prove how bad this book is, here is some dialogue.
Shi'ar captain: Never!
Havok: Starjammers!! Take them down!
Gladiator: They lack honor.
Korvus: You X-men talk far too much in Battle.
Havok: Let's do this.
Let's do this? Let's do this? Do people still say that? Is that something cool? Let's do this? You have the chance to write dialogue in an X-men book, a book that thousands of people could read, and you write, "Let's do this?" Get the torches! Build the scaffold! Who knows how to tie a noose knot?
This book is just terrible. Don't even think of buying it. Just keep walking. Buy the Astonishing X-men instead. Or the Fantastic Four or the Ultimate Fantastic Four. Or read some old Planetary comics. Just don't buy this book. Please. I'm begging. The more bad books we buy, the more they make. The cycle stops now! Let's do this!

Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1 of 6
So, from what I understand, there are a bunch of people who like Gerard Way and his band, My Chemical Romance. I haven't actually listened to any My Chemical Romance, so, as far as that goes, whatever. However, I did read the Free Comic Book Day issue of Umbrella Academy, and it was pretty awesome. So, hey, that's good! It looks like a pretty wacky offbeat comic that has a lot of cool creative ideas. That's great; original comics are always a good thing in my book!
Justice League of America #13
Dwayne McDuffie's run on the Justice League begins! Well, actually, it sort of began in the Justice League of America Green Arrow Black Canary Wedding Special Number One, but that was more a prologue than anything else. Here, I'll hit the important parts from that for you: Hal Jordan told John Stewart to take over for him in the Justice League, and Lex Luthor, Cheetah, and the Joker started some wacky Injustice League or Society or what-have-you. There you go, you're ready to read the start of a new and hopefully awesome run on DC's premiere superteam.
Wonder Woman Annual #1
Hey, remember that opening story arc to Wonder Woman? It was over a year ago, I think. Do you remember the ending? Yeah, that's right, it didn't have one...until now. Yes, a mere seven months have passed, and Allan Heinberg has descended from his golden throne in the heavens to bestow upon us another comic book script. Truly, we are blessed people, to have comic book scripts written by people who also write television scripts!
Countdown to Mystery #1 of 8
I have to admit that, after the largely uninspiring Helmet of Fate miniseries and the subsequent delays of the Doctor Fate book, I kind of lost interest in the whole Doctor Fate relaunch. However, since then, I've read a pretty awesome interview with Steve Gerber and seen a short preview of the book, and now I'm hopeful that this book will be really awesome and actually pretty stoked about the whole thing.
Green Arrow/Black Canary Wedding Special #1
I think they actually get married in this one! I hope!
The Immortal Iron Fist Annual #1
If you had asked me a year ago if I wanted an Iron Fist comic book, I would probably have said, "I guess so." Well, hypothetical indecisive me from the past, prepare to eat hypothetical crow, beacuse this Immortal Iron Fist Annual makes me want two Iron Fist comic books. If you read the first arc of Iron Fist, then you have impeccable taste--but you also know about Orson Randall, the Iron Fist from World War I. Well, this annual is all about him and his pulp-inspired adventures, and now I want to read another Iron Fist comic entirely about Orson Randall. If you don't read the Immortal Iron Fist Annual, you are definitely missing out.
World War Hulk #4
Do I really need to explain why World War Hulk is awesome? Really? If you don't know now, there's not really any hope for you. Hulk is smashing things. Things are getting smashed. It's a fairly simple, yet elegant, gameplan. Please, enjoy the smashing and such as that.
