Magic: The Gathering - Lorwyn is Just a Few Short Weeks Away!

i already hate this flyer

Get ready for the newest set of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a ton of new stuff!  There's this whole focus on creatures with Lorwyn, and there's also some sort of nonsense about a Planeswalker card.  Since the players are supposed to be planeswalkers (I think), I'm hoping this means the Pro Tour Player Cards will become tournament legal!  If not, I'm sure they'll be interesting in some way.

And look at all those prizes!  That's some "tight swag," as the kids are known to say these days.  Of course, we have to get 15 players minimum, but with awesome prizes like that, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Don't forget that we also do Mini-Masters tournaments and Drafts every week!

The Fanboy Spotlight
Superman vs. Doomsday Action Figures
countdown to infinite merchandise$19.99 Each

The Superman vs. Doomsday DVD ships this week, and to celebrate, DC is releasing action figures for you to buy!  They actually look pretty sweet in that picture there, though.  There's Doomsday, Superman, Solar Suit Superman, and Lex Luthor with a Robot Sidekick!  Fun for the whole family, provided they're all Superman fans and they fit a bunch of other criteria I'm not going to list.

Walking Dead Vol. 7 TP
you kids and your zombies$12.99

So, from what I understand, Zombies are fairly popular these days.  Also, Walking Dead is a really good comic book, according to what I've been told.  Uh, so, um, here's Volume 7 of the Trade Paperback collections, I guess.  It collects issues 37-42.  Enjoy!

The Killer Vol. 1 HC
'oh archaia studios press, you've done it again!' 'what can I say?' *HIGH FIVE*$19.95

Hey, guess what?  Archaia Studios Press released another awesome comic!  This hardcover collects the first four issues of The Killer, a comic about, well, a killer.  It's a fascinating character study of a completely amoral yet surprisingly sympathetic hitman.  Oh, he's starting to get backed into a corner, and he's losing his mind.  Sounds like things are going to go well!  If you haven't checked out this latest awesome book from Archaia Studios Press--publishers of Mouse Guard, just to name one of their great books--then you're doing yourself a disservice.  This hardcover is definitely worth your consideration.

Chaos Space Marines Terminators
one of like a billion models you can make with the new sprues$50.00

Many veteran Chaos Space Marines enter battle wearing the revered and rightly feared Tactical Dreadnought Armour, or Terminator armour as it is more commonly known. The armour is massively bulky and contains a full artificial skeleton of fibre bundles and adamantium rods to support the heavy gauge plasteel and ceramite plates that form the outer carapace. A Terminator can move and operate with remarkable freedom and agility considering the sheer mass of the actual armour, which provides as much protection as an armoured tank hull.

This boxed set contains enough plastic components to assemble five (5) Chaos Space Marines Terminators including a Heavy Flamer and a Reaper Autocannon. All models are supplied unpainted and require assembly.

Exalted 2nd Edition: The Sidereals
it's pronounced sigh-deer-ee-ulls, for some reason. also, i clearly do not know proper phonetic spelling$31.99

Finally, the coolest Exalted are back.  The Sidereals, with their bureaucracy and fate magic and what-have you.  Ready for Exalted: Second Edition, no less!  If you've only experienced the Second Edition of Exalted, then get ready to find out how the Sidereals are the real heroes of the setting, and your stupid Solars have just been mucking it up for everyone.  If you have Exalted, this book is invaluable, and you should definitely get it.

Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears Premiere HC
ghost rider is actually a lot less ridiculous when he doesn't ride a motorcycle$19.99

Garth Ennis was born to write westerns.  Dark westerns.  Well, that's what he does here with Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears, the story of a Civil War soldier set upon the path of vengeance.  I don't want to say anymore at the risk of giving away plot points.  Let me just say that if you enjoyed the Saint of Killers' story in Preacher, then you'll probably like this one.  It even features some awesome artwork by Clayton Crain.  Seriously, even if you could give a crap about Ghost Rider, you should still check this out if you're a western fan.

Hey, Look, I Found a Business Card From Mom's Tattoo!

BOOYAH

With a Brick of prize support every week!

It's the Last Week of the Warhammer League!

There's still time to get in those last few games before September 30th!  If you don't have a chance of winning, you can at least test your list for the next league, which will begin Sunday, October 14th and ends December 2nd!  The game room is also open for Warhammer most days, but we usually have the most people on Friday evenings.  Who knows why, it's just one of those things!

E-Bay Spotlight

What sort of awesome stuff does Fanboy Comics have on the Electronic Bay or "E-Bay," as the youth call it? Well, here's a sampling of the sort of stuff you might see on our store. Don't forget, if you buy any of this stuff, you can pick it up at the store and not pay shipping!  New auctions posted every Monday at 6:00 PM!

this is actual proof that there were total nerds before the internetGalaxy of Fandom #2 1976

This auction is for the magazine,Galaxy of Fandom #2, published in 1976 by Christopher Laird Simmons. Book had a very low print run making it a rare find. Of interest is an article of a then unknown movie, Star Wars, includes photos as well as an official press release. Also inside is a piece on actress Caroline Munro as well as numerous photos of the actress. Includes a reproduction pin-up of Vampirella by Alfredo Alcala.

Book is staple bound, black and white, has a paper wrapper cover, and is 34 pages (covers counted). Book has light to moderate edge and cover wear, crease mark on back cover and pen mark on front cover that does not affect cover, otherwise in nice condition. Very high eye appeal.

i haven't read anything about this but damn what a cool titleMind Over Murder by William Kienzle

This auction contains the vintage paperback Mind Over Murder by William Kienzle, published by Bantam Books in 1982.  This book is in (VG+) or better grade with lite edge and corner wear. There's also some spine creasing. Very nice interior! Don't miss out on this rare book.

It's still on!  While SuperDave has taken a commanding lead for that grand prize, you can still play games to rack up discounts each week!  We can also special order a wide array of Privateer Press models, so that's a good way to find something to use your discount on!  You might want to pick up some Hordes stuff, since we've got a Stampede tournament coming Sunday, October 21st!  More information on that will be coming soon!

Legend of Drizzt D&D Minis Tournament, Again!

We're having another sealed tournament for the Legend of Drizzt Scenario pack because it says so on our schedule!  So, uh, come on out again and try to win one of these:

hey, remember me?

Also, we're getting a restock of Death Knell boosters for D&D Minis.  That set has been out of print for a while, but now you have a second chance to get it!

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

Fanboy Comics' Wacky Off-The-Wall Halloween Spectacular!

Hey folks, I’m just here to have a GHOULISHLY good time celebrating Halloween with you newsletter readers! So, let’s get ready for a frightfully fun festival of frights and delights! First up, Thomas’s list of his Top 10 Halloween Trade Paperbacks, with wacky, off-the-wall commentary from me!

RIIIIING

Oh, wait, hold on. The Voodoo Phone is ringing.

Hello?

Yes, I’ll accept charges.

Oh, I have to dial ‘Z’ to accept? Okay, just a second…

GLUHURRK

...

...MUA-HA-HA-HA...

voodoophone (6K)What a sad, pathetic fool. Does he not know the powers with which he toys? The only collect calls on the Voodoo Phone are calls to collect your SOUL!

I ask you, what business has he explicating upon these fine works of horror literature? Truly, the thought offends me, as a lover of the dark arts. Who am I, that would call on the Voodoo Phone—channeling my darkest voice through phone lines installed exclusively in ancient Indian burial grounds and made of wire from melted-down copper from coins minted in 1666—you may ask? Well, the answer could perhaps surprise you—shock you—horrify you, even!

...HA HA HA…

Enough…introductions, if you would. Let us plumb the depths of horror with this fool, this Thomas, and see what frightens him.

#10

Torso
by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Andreyko

voodoophone (6K)What a curious choice. Truly, Brian Michael Bendis is one well known to the darkest powers, as he sold them his soul for success—are you surprised? How else do you think Avengers scripts with that much dialogue get published?

Nonetheless, it warms my soul that there are those who can still find horror in such mundane things as serial murder—such earthly horrors seem hardly even noticeable to the masses these days. Truly, man should not look without for their darkest foe—he lurks within

#9

Black Hole
by Charles Burns

voodoophone (6K)Bah, who reads indie books? Let us move along.

#8

Boneyard, Vol. 1
by Richard Moore

voodoophone (6K)Hmm…this title has, perhaps, some promise. What can be more horrific than the unnaturally desirable? Of course, the pleasures of the flesh are so very…bittersweet, for one such as I. But I have said too much. Let us continue on, lest my desire overcome me.

#7

The Essential Tomb of Dracula
by Marv Wolfman, Gene Colan, and others

voodoophone (6K)Bah! Dracula is a coward! He hides during the day—if he was truly at all horrible, he would strike while fully visible, and let those whom he hunts cower before his visage! Who would cower before fey eurotrash in a cloak, though? Thusly, he disguises himself in the shadows and lurks about calling himself some sort of “master of the night”. Morbius more terrifying than he.

#6

EC Archives Tales From the Crypt

voodoophone (6K)Ah, the classics never get old, do they? If there were a grandfather of horror comics, it would be the delightfully sadistic offerings from the only company willing to promise you were buying an “Entertaining Comic.” Such bravado on their part! You would never see such a guarantee on the comics of the modern age, because they would get the crap sued out of them.

#5

From Hell
by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell

voodoophone (6K)What is this? Have I mistakenly picked up the list labelled “Best Comedy Trade Paperbacks”? To read this tale of Jack the Ripper is to know true humor—how could one take so many facts and come up with such a farce? Those who know the truth of Jack could find nothing but comedy in this tale, weaving a conspiracy of murder for the sake of the Queen of England. As if a liche would need help in killing a group of prostitutes!

Oops. Perhaps I have said too much. To the next offering!

#4

30 Days of Night
by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith

voodoophone (6K)Every time I speak of the cowardice of vampires, they sink to new lows! Not content with hiding for 12 hours a day, the fiends in this title have chosen to go to a land with a month of darkness! I will speak no more on the subject, should it agitate me further.

#3

Obergeist
by Dan Jolley and Tony Harris

voodoophone (6K)Nazis? I hate Nazis, perhaps even more than vampires. Next, please.

#2

Batman: The Long Halloween
by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

voodoophone (6K)While this story is not particularly horrific, it does have the boast of being excellent. Truly, Jeph Loeb is the Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde of comic writing—perhaps more like the Dr. Brubaker and Mr. Austen, not to put too fine a point on it. Fortunately for all, he created this work before deciding to phone it in for the rest of his life. Perhaps he should have Voodoo Phoned it in!

...HA HA HA…

#1

The Walking Dead
by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard

voodoophone (6K)Ah, zombies. Perhaps the only truly honorable type of undead. They simply shamble at you slowly, with no cause for guile and deceit—truly, they are among the most straightforward of all risen. Perhaps this list is not a complete waste of my energies. The only thing more horrifying than the tales Robert Kirkman weaves is the fact that he thinks Rob Liefeld is a good artist. Perhaps if his intent is to draw unknowable, non-Euclidian horrors, he might be proficient—I contest that there are no zombies as terrifying as Liefeld’s anatomy; I have experienced both firsthand.

For those who would dare, their own personal Halloween lists can be submitted to halloweenlists@fanboycomics.biz. Also, forget not about our costume contest, information about which I shall reprint now…and I shall see you next time!

Send us a picture of your Halloween costume and we will put it in the newsletter. Here are the prizes:

Best Overall Costume – $100.00 Gift Certificate
Most Creative Costume – $50.00 Gift Certificate
Best Couple’s Costume – $25.00 Gift Certificate
Best Kids/Animal Costume – $25.00 Gift Certificate

Please make sure you include a recent comic in you picture so we can tell it’s from this year. Start sending in those pics to costumecontest@fanboycomics.biz right away! The contest ends Monday, November 5th.

i title this one, 'disappointment'

how can you take a dig at booster gold being a minor character when you rave about a story featuring hellcat

Marvel Comics Presents #1

Featuring: Marc Guggenheim, Dave Wilkins, Stuart Moore, Clayton Henry, Rick Koslowski, Andrea DiVito, Stuart and Kathryn Immonen and some dude named Nelson.
Price: $3.99
Publisher: Marvel

Finally. Finally, some one is listening to me. Thank God. After all these years of screaming and writing letters and spamming and shouting at people's mothers, Marvel Comics Presents is back! In your face, Red State Republicans!

For those of you that don't know, Marvel Comics Presents use to be a showpiece book that had rotating creative crews focusing on short but serial stories. Sam Keith had an amazing run in the book, making his Wolverine and Hulk famous. It's been gone for awhile, but I'm very happy that its back, especially if the quality of work stays as high as it is in this first issue.

So what's so great about the first issue? Well, for starters, there is a murder mystery that involves terrorism and super-humans somehow. And the only witness at the crime scene? The Watcher! You have Hellcat in a story that doesn't suck, where she opens a Satanic book and creates duplicates of herself! Oh No! Another story has Spider-man facing his greatest threat, the Galactic Alliance of Spider-men! There is Alpha Flight story too, but that one kind of sucked, And there's a great end piece with the Thing, re-enforcing his true love. Awww!!!

What I'm excited about is the rotating of the creative crews. This book could be a comic freaks dream, with some great artists and writers rolling through it for short times, telling concise stories. Marvel needs a book like this, especially after the Civil War. A lot of characters have been mentioned and shown, but Marvel Comics Presents could spotlight them and make them even more relevant and important.

The only thing I'm afraid of is that the quality of the stories could falter. This book cannot be a trashcan for characters like Booster Gold or crap like that. Only quality can be allowed here. And who knows? Maybe after this book becomes successful, other old favorites will see the light of day again. X-men Classic would be awesome. Pick this up if you're a fan of some Marvel goodness.

the avatar comics business model - take a respected creator, asked him for a rejected pitch, and then add a lot of blood to it

Streets of Glory #1

Writer: Garth Ennis
Art: Mike Wolfer
Color: Greg Waller
Publisher: Avatar Comics

Yep. This book is crap. Worse than Booster Gold. Worst than pretty much anything I've read so far. I'm currently using it as toilet paper. No, I'm not. But I probably should.

So lets break it down. Some guy and his brother go out west. The setting is the late 1800s, when people carried pistols and eat gopher meat. Some bandits show up and kill the older brother. Why? Cause they are bandits. Bandits kill people. All the time. Last year, 10,000 people were killed by roving bandits. I looked it up on Wikipedia. Anyway, before the younger brother gets killed, a dude shoots all of them with perfect shots and without getting shot himself. Why? 'Cause he is a badass. Badass dudes kill one million people in India. I'm serious. Afterwards, the Badass dude and the kid go into a town where more badass dudes show up. Man! So amazing. Thanks Garth Ennis!

Its just stupid and I've read it all before. Way before. Remember Preacher? What happened to Preacher? That was a comic book. Preacher was a work of science, a brilliant dive into the creative process of comic writing. I remember taking the last issue of Preacher and sitting in the Fanboy bathroom and reading it, right then and there. That is what makes a good comic. And it wasn't the violence or the language or all that junk. It was the characters. I loved the characters. They all were needed and they all were awesome. I miss those days.

Streets of Glory, well, I'm not sure what it is trying to do. The man guy looks a lot like the Saint of Killers, but haven't we heard this story before? Do we have need for more comics where an old dude comes to town with dual weapons murdering the wrong-doers? There has to be more than that for me to keep reading a comic.

A lot of the Avatar books are like this. Besides Black Summer, I'm not sure about their line up. It seems like Garth Ennis wrote this on his toilet. Its not original and its not interesting. Ultimately, I just don't care. I know you still got the stuff, Garth. Keep trying. You'll return to your glory days again. Get it? Streets of Glory? Glory days? Whatever.

P-CAT, THE PENITENT PUSS is not in this book but he should be

Penance: Relentless #1

Writer: Paul Jenkins
Artist: Paul Gulacy
Colorist: Rain Beredo
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $2.99

Man, I miss good ol' Speedball. Remember Speedball? He would bounce around and make crud jokes and try bouncing on people's heads and having those little speed orbs knock people down. He was a nice guy. Too bad he had to accidentally get 600 people killed. That wasn't cool. Robert Baldwin is single-handily responsible for the entire Civil War in the Marvel Universe. Black Goliath dying? Baldwin's fault. Captain America getting shot? Baldwin's fault. Cyrus thinking he is always right? Well, that might not be Baldwin's fault, but somebody should take the blame. Baldwin has a lot to answer for, and it looks like he is working on taking his life back. One pierced nipple at a time.

Penance: Relentless deals with Penance slowing starting to act more like a human being. Every since the events at Stamford, the only way Penance can use his powers is if he is in some sort of physical pain. Thus, the suit. It impales him and cuts him, allowing him to use his powers. It's not really clear what those powers are. The old Speedball tapped into an extra-dimensional field that gave him kinetic abilities. These new powers seem to be the same, just immensely more so. On top of that, Penance is just tougher now--meaner and willing to do what ever it takes. He's also tapped into the Thunderbolt program, doing all the government's Witch-hunting. But, while trying to take out a Latverian-based terror attack, Penance starts working on his own agenda. Plus, what're all the damn numbers about?

I like this book and this character a lot. I'm a big fan of internal motivation. A character should have a real, solid reason to do something, besides it being the right thing to do. That never made much sense to me. The right thing to do can always change, shift and be the wrong thing to do. Penance feels guilty about what he did, and is working to make amends. Before, the government was using him as a weapon, but the book introduces the idea that Penance might have the mental stamina to make his own decisions. Excellent stuff. I give all this credit to Paul Jenkins. He is an unbelievably talented writer who can make wonders out of crap. I'm not saying that Penance is crap. I'm just saying that this mini-series could have been crap, be it wasn't. I'm hoping the later issues are just as good.

If you are sick of the Civil War stuff, you should take a pass at this book. It trips with the same old themes and stories we've been dealing with for months. But if you like the way Marvel is handling Penance, you should most-def check this book out. Most-def is street lingo, by the way.

A few months ago, I probably wouldn't have given a book like this a chance.  I mean, sure, Metamorpho is cool as far as my reflexive love for goofy silver-age characters goes, but what would we get out of a Year One story for him?  Well, the Green Arrow: Year One comic has been so good that I'm willing to take the plunge on this most recent of DC's upcoming series of Year One titles, and hey, it's not like Dan Jurgens is untalented or anything.  Hopefully, in six months, I'll think Rex Mason is just as cool as any other character in the DC Universe.
