You can click that image for a bigger version where you can read all of my lame jokes!
Aside from that, though, the Stampede looks to be a cool, interesting tournament format that rewards fast and furious play. Half of the players are defenders, half are attackers, and if the defender wins, he stays at the table. If the attacker wins, he becomes the defender. There are also some rules for attrition and a special scenario for the tournament, but you can read all of that extra stuff in the official rules document at Privateer Press's website.
Oh, and we're still running the Discountstruction league! There's not much time left, so you should definitely get in as many games as possible!
The Question: Zen and Violence TP
$19.99
I don't know anything about this book, but everything I've heard about Denny O'Neill's Question is that it is amazing. The Question was amazing in 52, and everything I've heard from Greg Rucka indicates that he took all of his cues from O'Neill's legendary run. Finally, DC is giving us a chance to read some of their classics without hunting through boxes and boxes of back issues. I'm taking advantage of this opportunity, and I hope the book can meet my expectations.
Conan: The Phenomenon HC
$29.95
Conan the Barbarian. Just the word conjures up thoughts of a sweaty, muscled man in a loincloth. Of course, that could just be me--the same thoughts are conjured by the words alphabet, political science, and badger. Nonetheless, Conan is quite possibly the most famous and enduring pulp character of all time, and this book delves into why. It is the definitive guide to Conan. You know how I know that? It is written by Paul Sammon who is--and this is an actual quote from Dark Horse's site--a "Conan Historian." My guess is that Paul Sammons is at the top of that field. Of course, he might also be that field, but whatever.
Chaos Space Marines Terminator Lord Box Set
$20.00
Games Workshop just keeps releasing more and more awesome, easily-customizable box sets for their games. The picture to the right there is just one of a ton of possible permutations of the pieces in that box. If there's one thing that GW has over its competing miniatures, it's how easy it is to customize their figures.
Aliens vs. Predator Omnibus Vol. 2
$24.95
I hear that the kids these days enjoy their Aliens and Predators. Well, if they also enjoy omnibuses, we've got a bona fide hit on our hands! The second volume of the Aliens vs. Predator omnibus series contains a wealth of story--over 400 pages worth--all centered around an AvP classic by legendary comics writer Chris Claremont! I even think this was written before he was a hack! If you're a fan of the Aliens or the Predator or what-have-you, this book is a pretty danged good deal.
Blade: The Sins of the Father TP
$14.99
Marc Guggenheim is a very talented writer. His writing on Blade has been quite good. The character was pretty danged interesting and cool under his watch. I'm not quite sure why the book didn't do better.
Featuring art by Howard Chaykin.
Yeah, I don't know what's up.
Well, we've priced some more of those awesome comics we acquired recently (hence the name of this segment) and only a few of them are being held behind the counter. The rest are in our recently acquired back issue boxes over near our DC back issue boxes. Just ask, and we can point them out to you. Anyway, here's what got put in the boxes behind the counter:
Doom Patrol: #96, 98-106, 116-118 (#99 - First Appearance of Beast Boy; #100 - Origin of Beast Boy)
Daredevil: #51-58, 62, 65, 69, 71, 72, 76-83
Everything else should be in the recently acquired boxes:
Sgt. Fury: #11, 34 (Origin of the Howling Commandos), 35 (Eric Koening Joins the Howling Commandos), 38, 41
Our Army at War Featuring Sgt. Rock: #200-202, 204, 205, 207-219, 221, 222, 224-226, 242 (Also Listed as DC 100-Page Spectacular, Very Hard to Find)
Sgt. Rock: #312
Spectre: #7
Night Force: #1-5
Men of War: #13, 19, 20
House of Mystery: #185
Tales of the Unexpected: #81
Marvel Comics Presents - Bloodstone: #1-2
Captain Marvel: #3
Star Wars (30 cent Marvel Comics Version): #1
Web of Spider-Man: #1 (Fifth Appearance Black Costume)

Get ready for the newest set of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a ton
of new stuff! There's this whole focus on creatures with Lorwyn, and
there's also some sort of nonsense about a Planeswalker card. Since the
players are supposed to be planeswalkers (I think), I'm hoping this
means the Pro Tour Player Cards will become tournament legal! If not,
I'm sure they'll be interesting in some way.
And look at all those prizes! That's some "tight swag," as the kids
are known to say these days. Of course, we have to get 15 players
minimum, but with awesome prizes like that, I'm sure it won't be a
problem.
Don't forget that we also do Mini-Masters tournaments and Drafts every week!
Yeah, it's just around the corner, on November 3rd. If you're interested in DMing, shoot us a line at fanboycomics@bellsouth.net. Maybe include the word "DM" in the subject title somewhere.
What sort of awesome stuff does Fanboy Comics have on the Electronic
Bay or "E-Bay," as the youth call it? Well, here's a sampling of the
sort of stuff you might see on our store. Don't forget, if you buy any
of this stuff, you can pick it up at the store and not pay shipping! New auctions posted every Monday at 6:00 PM!

piece of music history!

Here's a rundown of the main stuff we buy:
- Silver Age Superhero Comics - While recent comics are
all pretty enjoyable, we really only want the Silver Age Superhero
stuff. The Silver Age is generally going to be comics published on or
before 1977. It can sometimes be hard to figure out the date a comic
was published, so a good rule of thumb is that the cover price should
be $0.35 or less. And while we have nothing against comics not about
superheroes, the stuff we can sell is Silver Age Superheroes.
- Used Trade Paperbacks
- If they're in decent condition, we'll probably pick them up. It's
difficult to give any hard and fast guidelines for what we want,
because it depends a lot on what we have in stock and what we can order.
- Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic Singles
- We only buy rares, and I can give you even fewer guidelines about
this. Mac is in charge of all of our singles sales, and he works on
Thursday through Monday, so those are really the only days we can buy
any cards.
- Used Roleplaying Games - We'll look at
pretty much any roleplaying games. We don't usually buy stuff that is
currently in print, but if you've got the time to stop by, it's worth a
shot. We're always interested in classic Dungeons and Dragons books.
- Used Records
- Thomas buys a lot of old jazz and blues records for his personal
collection. Records are like CDs, except black and older. Kind of like
the blues musicians Thomas likes!
- Vintage Paperbacks and Pulps - I don't know anything about these. We might buy them, though!
Be sure to call before you come by to make sure we're not too busy to
look at your stuff! We can also set up an appointment. Just call (910)
452-7828 or email
fanboycomics@bellsouth.net.
As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

...MUA-HA-HA-HA...
Yes, I have returned...did you think I could be exorcised from this place? After the first of those so-called "Halloween" lists, I feel that I am needed more than ever--A HA HA HA HA...
Now, let us see what is offered by Jackson--perhaps his choices will be more...palatable to one with such refined tastes as I...
#10
The Essential Tomb of Dracula
by Marv Wolfman, Gene Colan, and others
More of these cursed vampires. Who decided that there should be any reverence for such ignoble creatures. Still, that this has been on two lists is cause for thought; perhaps these stories reveal what a fool Dracula--so-called "King" of vampires--is!
#9
Spawn Collection Vol. 1
by Todd McFarlane
From the dark twisted mind of one of the all-time masters of horror comes...wait, Spawn?! I thought there would be some sort of work by Poe, or Lovecraft, or such as that, yet all I see is the work of a washed-up, overrated hack. Of course, I may perhaps be too hard on Todd McFarlane, as he is somewhat responsible for the seven million people who play Demons in City of Heroes.
#8
The Essential Godzilla, Vol. 1
by who cares
Did I miss something? Is this the list of old comic books that have nothing to do with Halloween? Have I entered the very maw of madness by reading this list? Please, let some of the higher-ranking choices be a bit more, I don't know, not completely foolish.

Again with the Vampires! Have I not stated my feelings on them clearly enough?
#6
Hellboy
by Mike Mignola
Well, if we won't have any of the classic horror writers on here, at least we have a comic book that takes some inspiration from them. Still, I could beat up Hellboy if I wanted to. I'm just saying.

Now this is a good Halloween book, because Halloween should be fun, much like this book is. Also, the book is filled with horror! Truly, the dichotomy of Halloween is realized in this, uh, superlative comic.

Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #13
Writers: Ian Boothby, Gerry Duggan, Thomas Lennon, Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn
Artists: Terry Austin, Hilary Barta, Pia Guerra, Jason Ho, Andrew Pepoy, Tone Rodriguez and Mike Rote
Publisher: Bongo Entertainment
Price: $4.99
I hate the Simpsons. I don't think they are funny. I used to think they were funny five years ago because they were funny five years ago. But now, eh. Who cares? Well, to be fair, a lot of people do. Bulging masses of insane freaks think they are the funniest things in the world. When will the show end? Hasn't it been on a billion years? Whatever. I gave up on television after Quantum Leap was canceled.
Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror is a jammed packed book of Simpsons. Boy is it full. A King-Sized 64 page Creepfest to be precise! It's so much creepy that I got really bored with it and used it to kill cockroaches. You want to know scary? Cockroaches are scary! Anyway, the book has some alright stories in it. From a Jaws parody to a strange twilight show parody to a big parody about every sci-fi movie in the book. The comic hits pretty much all the bases. My favorite is when Homer is Anakin Skywalker fight Obi-Wan. It's funny because it's true. That movie sucked.
The artwork bothered me the most. Every page looked about exactly the same. Yeah, I know it's the Simpsons and they are supposed to look a certain way, but can't we mix it up a bit? Do something a bit different? No? Whatever. Some of the stories were pretty stale, too. One with Mr. Burns is cool, him being stuck in a robot suit just in case he died. But the jokes go on for a bit long. Smithers is in love with Mr. Burns. We get it. We got it ten years ago.
I'm just not thrilled about this comic. Why such a high score, you ask? Well, I completely understand that there are Simpsons fans out there, wandering the world trying to soak up as much Simpsons as possible. This book is right up their alley.
RATING: 4/5
Justice League of America #13
Writer: Dwayne McDuffie
Penciller: Joe Benitez
Inks: Victor Llamas
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
For everything good, there is something bad. For every action, there is a reaction. When you eat something that tastes great, you have to go to the bathroom for a number two. These are the rules of our lives. Huh? No, I'm not talking about the Justice League and the In-Justice League. I'm talking about the awesomeness that is the Civil War and the bag of droppings which is...what is DC calling this event anyway? Does it even matter?
So, Lex Luthor has gathered together the world's greatest villains. They have taken down Batman, the Flash, Red Arrow, Wonder Woman and Firestorm. When the Justice League goes to investigate, they are taken down by different In-Justice League members. And at the end of the book, Lex Luther is wearing a green and purple suit with an "L" on it.
Sigh.
Ok, here is my first complaint. Vixen, Black Canary and Superman face Gorilla Grodd, Cheetah and Dr. Light. Let's think about this. Gorilla Grodd might be a really smart, really big Gorilla, but he's still a Gorilla. Dr. Light might be powerful, but he's not physically fast. And Cheetah. She is fast and has claws. None of these losers are as powerful as Superman. In a real world situation, Superman would hit Dr. Light first, cause he's the most powerful, then hit Gorilla Grodd and then Cheetah. Total fight time: 3 seconds. Instead, we see Canary take out Dr. Light, Vixen take out Grodd with the powers she siphoned from Superman and Black Lighting showing up out of no where and frying Cheetah. All while Superman stands there. No. No. No.
Second, the League sit around a big table and talk about what they should do, making a plan, while three of their people are missing. They sit. And talk. They have communication equipment. They can talk as they are on the move. Why sit around? Are they tired? Really? Superman has to sit and discuss? Wow.
Three, Batman is captured and put into a straight jacket in the beginning. If you were a villain, and you somehow captured the greatest Detective in the world, what's the first thing you would do? Call a friend? Maybe. Take a picture and put it on Myspace? Sure. Then, guess what? YOU TAKE HIS MASK OFF! But they don't. For some stupid reason, they don't. Sure, it's known that Batman has some defenses against that. But, hey, I'm sure Lex Luthor could figure out a way around that. I guess they don't care. They are too busy high-fiving.
Lastly, the art sucks. The art is horrible. Take the worst of Todd McFarlane and the worst of Rob Liefeld and smash them together and you've got this guy. Just bad. Let's move on.
The stakes aren't high enough in this book. I don't care about anything they are doing or talking about. And they aren't doing or talking about anything. I understand the In-Justice League's motives. Kill the bad guys, take over the world. Sounds good. But, I don't feel like there is anything to lose, or that the villains even care. Every one in this book looks bored and I'm bored right along with them. Just pump up the story a little. If the Joker caught Batman, the Joker would put a bullet in his head. This isn't the sixties anymore. Villains shouldn't be acting like morons. In short, this book needs to step its game up. Way up.

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #1
Writer: Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray
Art: Renato Arlem
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
Wow. Something not utterly horrible.
So you would think that a book with the Ray, Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady and Red Bee would be junk, right? You would think that. I thought that. But, once I started reading, something in my mind clicked. This book isn't bad. It's actually good! It was like a beam of light from the heavens, shining down on me!
The Freedom Fighters are sent to space to repel an attack of alien bees. Yeah, I know. But Red Bee is captured and mutated. The Freedom Fighters fight for days until Red Bee comes out and "talks" to the queen bee, telling her that the world is her colony, not the queens. And when the Freedom Fighters come back, the United States is rebuilding from the Amazon attack and the government is looking for a few good men for a super hero team.
What got me about this book is that it's just well written. Everything about it. I know it seems like it shouldn't be. But trust me. I read a lot of bad writing and this isn't it. The story is taking up the energy, not the action or the building up to the action. Red Bee is cool because she's changed, but embraces the change. Deep down, we know there is going to be a problem with her decisions and the story embraces it.
Plus, at the end of the book, the team is split. Half of them stay with the government to form a regulated super team, while the other half leave. This is a bold action to take at the beginning of the series, but it feels right. Instead of waiting to ramp up the action and consequences later, the book makes things interesting and engaging early on. It makes the piece more powerful and thought out. Think about it. The best television shows and movies are the ones that make this huge, bold leaps, then deal with the ramifications.
The art by Renato Arlem is amazing. It's dark and sketchy but really detaild and smooth. There might be as much detail in these pages as a George Perez comic. The art is wonderful and really adds to the dark and uncertain nature of the story.
I can't get over how much better this book is than some other junk out there. DC is constantly putting out really good short-run books. Why can't they give this type of energy to the Justice League? Talent like this is appreciated and I'll probably read the rest of the run. I don't even like Uncle Sam. That's the sign of a great comic.

Newsletter for October 2, 2007
So, if you've been keeping up on your Fanboy Comments Continuity, you saw that last week I was killed by a zombie. So, you may be wondering, how am I still updating this newsletter and doing my various other web-related tasks? Well, it turns out that Heaven has awesome wireless internet.
I'm sure you're all probably wondering exactly how I ended up in Heaven. Well, allow me to elaborate and say that Heaven doesn't secure their wireless internet:

That makes it easy for their neighbors to connect to the internet. Particularly their downstairs neighbors, if you see what I'm getting at.
Yeah, it turns out that the weight of all my sin has dragged me down to the infinite abyss. I'm actually in the eighth circle, which is surprising: I was voted in High School "Most Likely to Be Condemned to the Sixth Circle of Hell." Shows what they know.
Anyway, as a general falsifier, I'm here in the tenth bolgia, afflicted with a disease. I guess they decide them at random, because I was just afflicted with male pattern baldness. All in all, it's not too bad here--the cafeteria serves Sloppy Joes every Tuesday--and hey, guess who I ran into? Fellow sloppy joe lover Jack Kirby! As a journalist, sort of, but not really, I had to take this opportunity to interview "The King."
The Editor: So, Jack, what brings you to, uh, Hell?
Jack Kirby: Well, I was Jewish.
TE: Ah, yeah. That will do it.
JK: Well, you know, we all put our money on a different horse. One was bound to win.
TE: Heh, that's true. Now that you've had some time to look back, what would you say was the greatest creation of your career?
JK: I would have to say OMAC.
TE: Really?
JK: No. I created the Fantastic Four. How can you even ask me a question like that? Maybe you could ask me something less stupid.
TE: Well, what was it like working with Stan Lee?
JK: Look, I'll give you a hint: you should ask me which of my works I'm least proud of.
TE: Uh, okay. Which of your works are you--
JK: Galactic Bounty Hunters. I'm so glad that crap never saw print, and I spend every day thanking the editors who turned me down. Oh, and I was never particularly overfond of that Silver Star thing.
TE: (coughs) Um, moving on: what about, say, the New Gods?
JK: Now them, I liked. They were a lot of fun, and I really just had the freedom to let myself run wild with them. The only thing is that, in retrospect, I would have just totally separated them from the mainstream DCU. Of course, last I heard they had fallen a little bit to the wayside, so as long as DC doesn't try to use them as the backbone of their entire continuity or something crazy like that, everything should work pretty well.
TE: Oh, do you keep up at all on modern comics?
JK: Not really. Every once in a while, I'll see a guy who recognizes me or something, and we'll shoot the **** for a little while, but the last guy was telling me about this Death of Superman thing and some sort of Spider-Man story where they cloned him? I was like, "Look, if those are the ideas they're using in comics, then I could care less."
TE: You weren't the only one.
JK: Can't say I'm surprised. Next thing you know, they'll do something completely crazy like replace one of the Greek gods with Granny Goodness or something. Now that would be the death knell of comics.
TE: You know what? I'm going to go do something else before this conversation becomes too surreal.
Wow! That was a lot of fun, and hopefully not too disrespectful. Who will I run into next week? Only time will tell...

Green Lantern #24
Of all the comics that DC is putting out, the Sinestro Corps war is something that I don't have to thinly veil my contempt for--because it's actually really, really good. The preview I've seen online makes it look like a knock-down, drag-out fight between Earth's three Green Lanterns and, well, an army. So far, the Sinestro Corps War has been amazing, and Geoff Johns isn't usually one to drop the ball at the end.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24: "One More Day, Part 2"
One More Day continues, and hopefully it will continue to be cool--also, it will hopefully keep Spider-Man from being as ridiculously guilt-ridden as he is right now. Of course, the whole "Brand New Day" arc starting after this one seems to imply a return to a somewhat more lighthearted Spider-Man, so that's a good sign. Note to writers: JUST BECAUSE PETER PARKER'S PRIMARY MOTIVATION IS GUILT DOESN'T MEAN YOU NEED TO LAY IT ON AS THICK AS YOU DO. THIS ISN'T THAT TERRIBLE SEASON OF FRASIER WHERE HE LOST HIS JOB.

New Avengers #35
New Avengers keeps on rolling with this awesome post-Civil-War story arc that's leading into Secret Invasion. Who do you trust? Who's a skrull? Who isn't a skrull? Et cetera and so on and so forth? Still, I don't think the team dynamic has ever been sharper, and Leinil Francis Yu is a spectacular artist. Now, if only Cho could finish his Mighty Avengers issues so the stories don't get too out of synch.
