A very special message from Tom Fleming

Editor's Note: Tom Fleming is a local artist who's a great friend of Fanboy Comics.  He's a good dude, and I think it would be cool if you helped him out.

Hey guys,

I recently received the great news that two of my paintings have been accepted in the Greenwich Workshop's "Smallworks North America" competition and Exhibition! For those who aren't familiar with the Greenwhich Workshop, they are one of the biggest and most respected Fine Art Print makers in the world. Of all the artwork submitted, they chose 208 pieces, two of which were mine!! I'm very excited, but this is where YOU come in;

The top 208 pieces are presently on the website, and they are asking the public to vote to decide on the top 40. The top 40 get represented and published in the Greenwich Workshop catalog and gallery. This would be a HUGE deal for me, especially since I just started my venture into the "fine art" world five paintings ago. I have attached the link to the website below along with the images. All that you need to do is register as an "art collector" (which is just your name and address), then just view the artwork (art is listed in alphabetical order by last name) and vote for my pieces in the "Gold" & "Silver" metal categories. Voting ends Nov. 23.

I know everyone has very busy schedules, but PLEASE take a few minutes to vote, this could actually be a career changing event for me, and I absolutely appreciate all your support!! Please feel free to spread the word to anyone and everyone else!!

The Fanboy Spotlight
52: The Compendium TP
wait a second these characters existed before 52$19.99

Ever wonder what stories were responsible for Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, and Mark Waid's decision to single out the c-list characters they did to star in one of DC's biggest, most ambitious projects since Crisis on Infinite Earths?  Well, this trade paperback should go a long way towards explaining that.  It collects great solo stories about the main characters from the following issues: MYSTERIOUS SUSPENSE #1, GOTHAM CENTRAL #40, ANIMAL MAN #16, DETECTIVE COMICS #350, METAL MEN #45, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #97, STRANGE ADVENTURES #226, RIP HUNTER: TIME MASTER #97, SECRET ORIGINS #35 and JSA: SAVAGE TIMES!

52: The Covers HC
yeah, i guess to win an eisner, you have to do the same painted cover over and over again$19.99

In spite of the amazing writing, plotting, and everything else in 52, these covers by J.G. Jones might have been the most outstanding part of the whole series.  Over the course of a year, 52 came out on time each week with a new cover, every one of them based on art good enough for me to frame and put on my wall.  This hardcover provides some insight into the design process that was behind producing the most eye-catching cover on the shelves every week, for a year.

Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy Ultimate Edition HC
it's like WoW crossed with ragnarok online i'll say$29.99

If you thought about picking up that Sunwell Trilogy World of Warcraft Comic that came out, but were never a fan of the digest-sized trade paperback--well, here you go.  This hardcover has the whole trilogy (by Richard A. Knaak, who wrote some Dragonlance novels that I thought were really good back in the day) in a standard, 8x11 format.  If you're that hypothetical person I outlined in my opening sentence there, then, well, you have no excuse not to buy this.

Dungeons and Dragons Rules Compendium
THERE IS NO FOURTH EDITION SHUT UP$26.95

Tired of hauling all of your D&D rules supplements to the gaming table? Having trouble finding the rule you need? The Rules Compendium supplement takes all of the game's most important rules and presents them in a single comprehensive, easy-to-reference volume for players and Dungeon Masters. In addition to presenting the rules of the game, the Rules Compendium incorporates official errata as well as behind-the-scenes designer and developer commentary explaining how the rules system has evolved and why certain rules work the way they do.

Marvel Select Zombie Hulk Action Figure
like the hulk, but incredibly violent and destructive. wait a second--$19.99

Finally, an action figure representing someone who can bite through THE SILVER SURFER'S HEAD.  Look at that Hulk there, with his missing body parts and rotting flesh.  Isn't he adorable?

Look, I have no idea where I'm going with this, so let's just save everyone some embarassment and end this here.

Subscriber Appreciation Week!

That's right, we appreciate the people who have subscriptions to weekly comics through our store.  So much, in fact, that we're having a Subscriber Appreciation Week, going from Thursday, November 1st, to Wednesday, November 7th.  Anyone who comes in and updates their subscription information during that time will be entered to win a one year subscription to 10 comic titles--a value of over $300!

Of course, we're still fairly egalitarian here at Fanboy, so we want to give non-subscribers a fair shake.  Anyone who starts a subscription with us will also be entered in the drawing for the free year of 10 comic titles!

That weekend, from Saturday, November 3rd, to Tuesday, November 6th, we'll also be having a sale for subscribers where nearly every comic-related-item in the store will be 20-50% off--but only for subscribers!

Dungeons and Dragons Game Day 2007

let's all pretend 4th edition isn't coming out guys

Anyone wishing to DM on D&D Game Day should shoot us an email at fanboycomics@bellsouth.net

You can also pre-order the next Dungeons and Dragons miniatures set right now!  $135.99 for a case!

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

i'm really sorry

oh man thank god there are (SPOILER (not that jarvis seems to care)) amazons in this book, since amazons attack was such a huge success

Green Arrow and Black Canary #1

Writing: Judd Winick
Art: Cliff Chiang
Colors: Trish Mulvihill
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.50

So, after Black Canary and Green Arrow got married, Green Arrow tried to kill her and she stabbed him in the neck and killed him. Sorry if I ruined anything for you guys, but if you didn't know that you should read more comics.

Green Arrow and Black Canary #1 is the follow up to those events. Black Canary is angry from the start, almost killing any bad dudes that she comes across. Connor Hawke tries to calm her down, but what she is most angry about is that no one believes her. She thinks Ollie is still alive, and that the man that tried to kill her isn't really him. No one but Connor believes her, and Connor Hawke doesn't have the detective skills to figure out anything. But Batman does.

Spoiler Alert: Don't read this if you don't want the ending ruined. Green Arrow didn't try to kill Dinah. It was the shapeshifter Everyman. Where is Green Arrow? In a cage, imprisoned by the Amazons. End of Spolier!

So, is this book good? Yes. It is very good. Judd Winick has grown leaps and bounds as a writer and I doubt anyone else could do the job. He has a certain smoothness in his work, a very light hand. I'm constantly impressed by it. That shouldn't really surprise anyone that has read his previous works. Cliff Chiang's art is great too, and fits into the art style that the Green Arrow books have always used. Some of the figures are a bit thick, like they are balloon people, with air in their muscles. But that is me being too picky. The art is great and so is the writing. Stylish work here.

So why did I give it a 4.5? I don't like the marketing decisions. I'm not certain, but I think you have to follow, like, five one shots to get the whole Green Arrow/ Black Canary story. Then, after all that, they start a new series? It is painfully obvious that DC just wants to move books. Of course they do. DC Comics make comics so they can pay them bills. There isn't anything wrong with that. But it is damn annoying. Why couldn't they just keep this whole damn story line in the Green Arrow book? Self contained and easy to follow? All these one shots and special events just get really, really annoying and I expect better from a publisher. I'm not sure why I do, but I do. This is a solid book, though, and you should pick it up if you're a Green Arrow fan.

RATING: 4.5/5

thank god there's a dark character in gotham city

Simon Dark #1

Writer: Steve Niles
Art: Scott Hampton
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

The first scene shows a group of men getting ready to kill two people. Simon Dark is too late to save one, but he saves the other, taking piano wire and slicing the assailants head off. The innocent man says thank you, and what does Simon Dark do? He asks for money.

Awesome.

Simon Dark is the other protector of Gotham City. Homeless and more than a little bit crazy, he helps the people in his neighborhood and they help him. Children even run around and sing songs about him, not unlike Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street. Simon Dark wears a shirt similar to Freddy, which I highly doubt is coincidental. The book eludes that he has a dark, very hidden secret, and I'm sure it will be a good one. But that isn't what I'm looking forward to.

This book works well on many levels. First, the writing is amazing. There is a quality to it that you cannot ignore. You can just read something that is written well and it transcends the page, making you engage with the work. This book is creepy, but not forcibly. There are subtle things at work that keeps that book fresh and new. There are obvious gothic elements, but they are used correctly. This isn't a gothic book. The comic uses elements of gothic culture to tell a story. Every thing from Simon Dark's mask to him reading Edgar Allen Poe to the inner thoughts of the police coroner all work amazingly well together.

The art is wonderful, too. Just brilliant. Scott Hampton is perfect for this. The pages have a washed over feel, like the world has been covered in smog. The facial expressions are perfect and the pacing of the book is superb. I can't give the writing of Steve Niles or the artwork enough credit. If this book isn't an out-and-out hit right from the start, something is seriously wrong wit the comic's industry.

What I'm looking forward to most is the Batman. He'll show up in this book one day. I hope, really, really hope that he doesn't show up for at least the first twelve issues. This book needs time to grow. But, once Batman does make his presence known in the book, expect fireworks. There is an odd Joker-like energy around Simon Dark. It will be amazing to see how Batman reacts to him, and how Simon Dark reacts to the Dark Knight. Great book. A must read.

RATING: 5/5

actually, jarvis, i'm an exiles fan and i won't read this book. also, i haven't read exiles since claremont took over. he is the howard chaykin of writing. well, the artist howard chaykin. chaykin can actually write pretty well. anyway, welcome to the end of this alt text. i hope you enjoyed the ride!

X-Men: Die By The Sword #1

Writer: Chris Claremont
Art: Juan Santacruz
Inker: Raul Fernandez
Publisher: Marvel
Price: Is it more than a penny? Then it's too much.

This book is crap.

No, no, this book is a bit worse than that. Take bird droppings, put them in a pig-pin, then drop ten tons of elephant droppings on top of it. Then stir. This book is worse than that. I've said that books are bad before, and those books have received "3s" usually. I reserve "2s" for books that make me want to barf. And if you're wondering, when I see a book that deserves a "1", I might not be able to review it, because my #$%&ing head might explode.

I hate Chris Claremont. The only thing he ever did worth anything is his X-men stuff, and that was always barely readable. Why does Marvel keep letting him write books? I refuse to understand it. I know the guy has done some amazing work. But all the good stuff you do never erases all the crap you get away with. That's like saying that mass-murderers should be let free because they paid taxes. Give me a break.

I guess I should describe what happens. Excalibur, a team that no one has ever cared about, is partying and all the characters have a stupid crush on each other. Then Psylocke shows up, not dead for the tenth time. And then we go to the "ominverse", a place that the Captain Britain Corps protect. Yeah, I said it. The Captain Britain Corps. Then there is some silly junk about different universes and some Roma chick and some Jaspers dude and then Captain Britain gets shot by some chick in a technosuit and then I barfed.

First, a book this complicated is never going to make any sense to anyone. Second, only X-men and Exile fans are going to buy this book. And when they do buy it, they'll be so confused that they'll never buy it again. I mean, the Captain Britain Corps? Are you serious? Somebody thought that was a good idea? This is how it must of happened.

Some dude: "We need a good idea."

Other dude: "How about the Ominverse?"

Some dude: "Huh?

Other dude: "And then we get Captain Britains to protect it and we'll call it the Captain Britain Corps! That'll be awesome!"

Some dude: (Shoots himself in the brain.)

I don't blame Chris Claremont for coming up with the idea, but I do blame him for using it in a story. Who edits this stuff? Who thought this was good?! I give up. Don't buy this. Don't even think about it. When you see this book, fart on it.

the chilling story about how the authority ate a steak and was not sure which cut it wasThe Authority: Prime #1

Well, ever since Gene Ha kind of let the cat out of the bag about his and Grant Morrison's run on the Authority, (the cat was named "It ain't coming out," if you were wondering) there's been something of a void in the WildStorm universe.  While the relaunch gave us two of the best comic books on the shelves--Stormwatch PHD and Tranquility--it kind of botched its two marquee titles: the Authority and WildC.A.T.S.  Fortunately, Christos Gage is stepping in to write a six-issue miniseries about the Authority, and odds are it'll be pretty awesome.  For those of you who don't know, Christos Gage is a very good writer.  I wouldn't be surprised if he's the next Ed Brubaker.  What I'm trying to say, I guess, is to check this book out.  Darick Robertson's even doing the art!

i don't like zombies, but i like this book. go figureMarvel Zombies 2 #1

In spite of the fact that it is, quite possibly, the most overhyped and overexposed comic of all time, Marvel Zombies is still a fun, entertaining read.  Now, Robert Kirkman is taking us 40 years into the future--and the Marvel Zombies have eaten everything.  In the universe.  Well, looks like it's time to find some more fresh meat, and, hey, there's that teleporter thing that Reed Richards built on Earth!  Oh, there's also a New Wakanda that Black Panther has organized.  I wonder if there will be conflict between the two?

Editor: No.  It's Ant-MAN.  As in, a dude.  As in, no women on this cover.
