Subscriber Appreciation Week!

That's right, we appreciate the people who have subscriptions to weekly comics through our store. So much, in fact, that we're having a Subscriber Appreciation Week, going from Thursday, November 1st, to Wednesday, November 7th. Anyone who comes in and updates their subscription information during that time will be entered to win a one year subscription to 10 comic titles--a value of over $300!

Of course, we're still fairly egalitarian here at Fanboy, so we want to give non-subscribers a fair shake. Anyone who starts a subscription with us will also be entered in the drawing for the free year of 10 comic titles!  Heck, if a current subscriber brings in a friend who signs up for a box, he'll get entered again!

That weekend, from Saturday, November 3rd, to Tuesday, November 6th, we'll also be having a sale for subscribers where nearly every comic-related-item in the store will be 20-50% off--but only for subscribers!

The Fanboy Spotlight
Marvel Zombies: The Covers HC
oh for the love of$19.99

It's good to see that Arthur Suydam has brought himself back to the forefront after allegations of tracing other artists' work with his great covers for Marvel Zombies where he traces other artists' work--and then ZOMBIFIES IT!  That's right, all you need to do to go from 'hack' to 'featured in Wizard Magazine' is erace a few of the lines you traced and replace them with rotting flesh or bones or something before you paint it.  Isn't capitalism wonderful?

Southland Tales: The Prelude Saga
apparently people care about this$29.95

I don't know anything about this Southland Tales nonsense--heck, I haven't even seen Donnie Darko--but apparently there are a lot of people out there who are looking forward to it.  There were three small digest-sized comics put out about the whole thing, and now there's a collection of all three of them.  I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about with this thing, but I would imagine someone out there does!

The Spirit Vol. 1 HC
it's kind of a what if in the sense that it asks 'what if comic books didn't suck'$24.99

One of the best comics to come out in the past year has been Darwyn Cooke's fresh new take on Will Eisner's The Spirit.  Each issue is its own little self-contained story, with great art and great writing.  However, not everyone digs the issues, so they've put out this nice-looking hardcover.  Seriously, this book is one of the best titles DC makes.  Even if you've never read the Spirit, it's enjoyable and lavishly illustrated.  It was pretty gutsy to take on a character created by the father of graphic literature, but Cooke makes the whole comic feel completely natural.

World of Warcraft Series 1 Action Figures
yeah i always thought that world of warcraft was popular because of its strong characterizations$19.99 each

So, uh, here we go.  Action figures based on World of Warcraft.  They look pretty cool, in these pictures here.

Well, that's all I've got on this one.

How's it going out there, ladies?

Jellyfist

mac's problem with this comic is that--seriously--it is unrealistic

Marvel Zombies 2 #1

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Sean Phillips
Colors: June Chung
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

Forty years after the first Marvel Zombies story, the Zombie Heroes look over the universe and realize that they've eaten pretty much everything in it. It very rarely gets more awesome than that.

How can you not like Marvel Zombies? It's impossible. It takes the two most awesome things ever, Superheroes and Zombies, and smashes them together in a wonderful mix of blood, teeth and gross. You really can't ask for more. When I heard that Marvel was going to make a sequel, I was skeptical. Would this work? Haven't they pushed the limits as far as they can go? No, of course not. Especially if they take some cues from the Civil War story arc.

The progression of the story is what is making this piece great. Apparently, if the zombies don't eat long enough, they lose their hunger and can live "normal" lives. And they are immortal. Hawkeye's severed head is found under some rubble after half a decade. He's a little crazy, but wouldn't you be? Meanwhile, the Marvel Zombies out in space, partially cosmic powered, remember that there is a dimensional portal on Earth, and are on their way back to head to other dimensions, eating everything along the way.

You would think that all the jokes and watching Marvel heroes eat people would get old, but it never does. And Robert Kirkman is so funny that you can't wait to read what he's going to write next. Marvel Zombies is exactly what comics are supposed to be: risk taking but stylish and smart, with respect to the history but willing to push the boundaries. I don't really like the Acolyte angle in the story, with Cortez's kid wanting to start an uprising. I'm hoping he's the first one to be eaten.

I really can't say much more without giving the story away. If you've been avoiding Marvel Zombies because it's gross, you shouldn't. Give it a read. You won't be disappointed.

The Sword #1

Writers and Artists: The Luna Brothers
Publisher: Image
Price: $2.99

Damn you, Luna Brothers.

I was just happy reading the comics I normally read. I have, like, a billion of them that I read every damn week. And instead of doing what I normally should do, like write lesson plans are play video games, I read comics. And now, I have to read another damn comic book! Damn it! I love this book and I don't want to!

Buy The Sword. Cause I said so. Is there action? Yes, but not much. The first half is character building. The second half is the action. But the action wouldn't be as interesting without the first half. The Luna Brothers know what every good artist should know: people only care about characters in peril when the readers know who the characters are. Why should I care about a bunch of people put into a horrible situation if I don't even know who these people are? There is the good stuff. The Luna Brother's build the characters towards an ending that I will not spoil here. I'm not that big of a jerk. I will say that The Sword was the first comic in a long time to give me a solid, enjoyable emotional reaction.

The art is great, too. So simple, but so amazing. The lines are super thin, with this almost over-washed quality to the colors. If I have a complaint, I would say that the colors could be a bit richer. I'm a huge color fan, anyway, so that might just be my thing. But the colors are a little drab. It could just be like this to make the action that much more amazing when it happens. Still, I'll be very, very eager to see the next issue.

Like I said, I won't be revealing anything to you guys about this book. I'd ruin if for you. Just read The Sword. Read it twice. Read it three damn times. And get ready to hear one good thing after the other about it. I hate you, Luna Brothers. I really do.

The Death of the New Gods #1

Words and Pencils: Jim Starlin
Inks: Matt Banning
Colors: Jeromy Cox
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.50

"Even Gods Die. This we always knew. But deities and such unpalatable notions do not coexist well. The latter are destined to be ignored, if not denied. Ego blinds one to inevitable reality. It deafens you to the approaching footsteps of death." These are the words of Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips. He knows something. Something that is hidden to the rest of the New Gods. Someone is killing them. One by one, someone is ripping out their hearts and stealing their power. Who could do this? Why? How? Killing a New God isn't impossible, but it isn't easy. And the one New God who is responsible for sending the New Gods to the other side, the Black Racer, has been murdered horrifically as well. It's a secret the Darkseid knows, that Metron is investigating, and that all the New Gods are going to be very interested in solving. And the JLA will become very much involved once one of their own falls.

Yes, this ties into Countdown. But unlike some of the other crap that DC has been pumping out, this is actually really good. There are stylistic reasons for this. One, the writing. Jim Starlin holds our hands the whole time and it works out wonderfully. He explains everything, from how the New Gods came into being, to who all the major players are and why they are important to the story. Starlin never forgets that some people have absolutely no idea who the New Gods are, or why we should care. He treats the book as if no one has ever read anything and it makes the story so much more accessible. I have never cared about the New Gods before, but this book has made me an almost fan of them. The characterization is also amazing. Darkseid is a villain, but he is also a genius. His thinking and planning in the story is the most interesting part of the comic. He doesn't seem threatening or purely evil. He reads as a ruler of a world that cares for its survival.

The best thing DC did for this book is give it to Jim Starlin. He is absolutely amazing. His writing is brilliant and his art style is very much welcome. Just like George Perez, the art style might be a bit dated, but it works so well. Give me simple, detail riddled pages that come out on time and push the story any day.

I will admit that some of the characters in the New Gods stable are stupid. Granny? Himon? Magnar? Yeah, I don't know these cats and I don't care. Hopefully some of the characters not pulling their weight will be killed off. I will be reading this book to find out some interesting secrets. How will Darkseid use his part of the Anti-life equation? Who is killing the New Gods? Why? How? And how will all this tie into the Final Crisis? Wait and see, children. The answers are coming.

I guess one of the cool perks of being top dog of the DC writing staff is taking stuff you loved that was written out of continuity and putting it back into continuity. Or, more or less, just making stuff you thought was cool back in the day cool again. For my part, I'm glad that Geoff Johns is one of the top dogs at DC. He's brought life back into the Green Lanterns, the JSA is probably the best team book on the shelves these days, and now he's bringing back the good old days of Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes. Well, not exactly Superboy. Gary Frank follows Eric Powell's awesome art with his own awesome art.

Let me just lay something out there for you: Greg Rucka is awesome. He writes all sorts of awesome stuff, and it always seems to sell kind of mediocre. That's just wrong. Gotham Central was amazing. Checkmate is amazing. If half of the people who bought and enjoyed 52 buy this book, it will be a huge success, and Greg Rucka deserves it. He's an awesome writer who's willing to assume his audience is just as smart or smarter than he is. He makes sure things make sense, but he doesn't hold your hand. Buy more books by Greg Rucka.

If I saw Kingdom Come Superman was coming back in any book other than JSA, I would probably not give it a second thought beyond "Cash-in." However, it's appearing in Geoff Johns' Justice Society of America. Not to beat a dead horse, but Geoff Johns is extremely good at comic book writing. There seems to be an almost instinctive understanding of what makes the DC Universe great, and if he thinks that Kingdom Come Superman will result in a good story, then who am I to disagree?

dear jim lee, however much you are paying christos gage to make your inane wildstorm universe worth reading about, it isn't enough. sincerely, meMidnighter: Armageddon

As long as Christos Gage keeps writing good books, I'm going to keep recommending them. So far, I haven't read anything by him that's just fallen flat; the worst he seems to be able to do is a good book. Midnighter Armageddon seems to be kicking off another big Wildstorm reboot, which would mean that the Wildstorm universe is going to have been rebooted again before the second issue of the WildC.A.T.S. series from the previous reboot comes out. That's not Christos Gage's fault, though. So don't get mad at him!

i think at the end of the issue they announce that x-men messiah complex has been delayed two weeks and you have to give it back to marvel so they can properly delay itX-Men: Messiah Complex

Well, here it comes! The first big x-crossover since, uh, does House of M count? If not, I don't know. I stopped reading X-Men a while ago. I've started reading them again recently, though, because the new writers on these books are knocking them out of the park. Ed Brubaker's Uncanny? Knocking it out of the park. Mike Carey's X-Men? Consistently amazing. Peter David's X-Factor? Quite consistently one of the best books Marvel puts out, if not the best on occasion. If you've ever wanted to get back into the X-Men, now's the time. Heck, they even dug Silvestri out of wherever the heck he's been to illustrate this one-shot! If that can't entice you, I don't know what will.
