Anyway, here's what we've added this past week:

The Fanboy Spotlight
Heroes HC
THROUGH THE MAGIC OF TWEENING I REVEAL ALL TO YOU$29.99

I got into Heroes right at the end of the previous season.  It was pretty awesome!  Although the series is going through a bit of a sophmore slump right now (DEAR WRITERS OF HEROES: NOBODY LIKES THE NEW CHARACTERS OR NIKKI AND HONESTLY HIRO'S STARTING TO GRATE A LITTLE BIT TOO WITH THIS WHOLE JAPAN STORY ARC AND YOU REALLY SHOULD KILL THAT STUPID FLYING KID BECAUSE GOOD LORD IS HE ANNOYING) it's still one of the better programs on television.  They made a whole bunch of comics and put them online (weird, huh) and now they're in a hardcover collection with two covers, one by Alex Ross and one by Jim Lee.  Collect them all, you obsessive-compulsive nerds!

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born HC
it's baaaaaack$24.99

Well, if you were waiting for the collection when this Dark Tower series came out, here it is.  It collects issues 1-7 of the series which, honestly, I can't say much about because I didn't read it.  I do know this, though: it's incredibly pretty.  Jae Lee sure can draw.

Um, anyway, if you like the Dark Tower, you'll probably like this.

Warhammer Armies: High Elves
there are exactly four hundred and twenty high elves if you know what I mean$22.00

Yes, the new High Elves army book is here, and apparently everything is insane.  I hear that they always strike first, and also they have a cool looking dragon.  So there's that!  Anyway, if you're interested in picking up the High Elves, a ton of stuff hits this week in addition to the army book, like:

  • High Elves Phoenix Guard Command
  • High Elves Phoenix Guard
  • High Elves Archmage & Mage
  • High Elves White Lions of Chrace
  • High Elves White Lions of Chrace Command
  • High Elves Korhill
I have no idea what that stuff is, but it sure sounds impressive!
30 Days of Night: Eben and Stella TP
remember the part in the movie where everything was radically different from the comic? yeah, that part was great$17.99

The continuing story of the protagonists of 30 Days of Night, uh, continues here!  This covers the time period between the events in Dark Days and Return to Barrow, I think.  Maybe.  I'm not completely up on my 30 Days of Night continuity, but I do know that everything I've read has been awesome, and I can see no reason why this would be different.

Warmachine Wreck Markers
just one wreck marker from a cast of thousandsHeavy 'Jack Markers - $9.99
Light 'Jack Markers - $5.99

Hey, Privateer Press is putting out these fancy-pants wreck markers so you can know exactly where it was that your Warjack was destroyed!  There's a heavy and light marker for each faction, so ask about it if you don't see your faction's marker; we can probably order it.  These markers are not only decorative, but also highly functional, as the wreck can remove from the surrounding ring to make figuring out movement surprisingly simple!

Bootleg Helping Hands

help the childs

This holiday season Bootleg magazine and local musicians have come together to raise money for two local children's charities: Dreams of Wilmington and The Carousel Center.

Two CD compilations will be sold locally at record stores (Gravity Records, CD Alley & Yellow Dog Discs), at Planet, Cape Fear Wine and Beer and through PayPal. The CD is called Helping Hands, Volume 1 and 2. Volume one is a compilation of heavier material while volume two is a collection of laid back/singer-songwriter material. All music was created by local performers.

The CD's will be released November 19th and will be on sale through mid January culminating in a benefit concert at the Soapbox in downtown Wilmington. All proceeds go to the children's charities.

The project is being produced by Bootleg magazine and all bands/musicians have graciously and enthusiastically donated material to this project. Artwork for the albums was created and donated by Matt Gauck from Chicago, Illinois. Ian Millard at Cape Fear Studios is recording a song by Thunderlip specifically for this project. Local musician Stephen Sellers recorded Sai Collins and The Brothels for this project.

Listed below are the artists contributing to Helping Hands. Helping Hands has a MySpace page at myspace.com/bootlegmagmusic

VOTE FOR TOM FLEMING, HE'S PROBABLY A LOT MORE AWESOME THAN ANYONE ELSE YOU'VE EVER VOTED FOR

Editor's Note: Tom Fleming is a local artist who's a great friend of Fanboy Comics. He's a good dude, and I think it would be cool if you continued to help him out.

Hey guys,

I recently received the great news that two of my paintings have been accepted in the Greenwich Workshop's "Smallworks North America" competition and Exhibition! For those who aren't familiar with the Greenwhich Workshop, they are one of the biggest and most respected Fine Art Print makers in the world. Of all the artwork submitted, they chose 208 pieces, two of which were mine!! I'm very excited, but this is where YOU come in;

The top 208 pieces are presently on the website, and they are asking the public to vote to decide on the top 40. The top 40 get represented and published in the Greenwich Workshop catalog and gallery. This would be a HUGE deal for me, especially since I just started my venture into the "fine art" world five paintings ago. I have attached the link to the website below along with the images. All that you need to do is register as an "art collector" (which is just your name and address), then just view the artwork (art is listed in alphabetical order by last name) and vote for my pieces in the "Gold" & "Silver" metal categories. Voting ends Nov. 23.

I know everyone has very busy schedules, but PLEASE take a few minutes to vote, this could actually be a career changing event for me, and I absolutely appreciate all your support!! Please feel free to spread the word to anyone and everyone else!!

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

X-Men: Messiah Complex

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Penciler: Marc Silvestri
Inkers: Joe Weems and Marco Galli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Oh, you crazy X-men! Always getting into all kinds of trouble. First, you are this little minority with super-powers. Then, because of the events of M-day, you become pretty much extinct. There are about 200 of you now and, luckily, all the cool X-men got to keep all their powers. Awesome! But, wait. What's this? A new mutant is born! The first new mutant born since M-day! So, of course, everything is going to get even more zany and wacky from here.

That doesn't completely sum up this chapter. Other stuff happens to. When the x-baby is born, Cerebra goes nuts and Professor gets a dreadful nose bleed. He dispatches the X-men to get the kid, but when they get to the town, it is burning. Did the baby do this? No, true believers. It was the Purifiers, looking for the baby too, and hot on their heels are the Marauders, those murdering evil-doers lead by Mr. Sinister. But how did the Purifiers know about the mutant's birth? How did the Marauders? And when will the X-men stop reacting and start doing? Oh, and watch out for the one, the only, the Predator X!

The cool thing about this new X-men series is that maybe, just maybe, this M-day garbage is about to be over with. Don't get me wrong. I think the M-day stuff has produced some really amazing stories and has done wonders for the X-books. But it's getting a bit old, isn't it? Are we sick of this yet? Everybody knows that the status quo has to return sooner of later. I could be wrong. I preach about comics doing risky things all the times and the M-day storyline has been plenty risky. But a change has to happen because all the X-men are doing is whining about M-day and them being almost extinct. They sit at home and cry. I'm serious. I peep into their windows.

I also like the introduction of Sinister as a really good villain again. He's been sitting on the sidelines way to long and I'm excited about what's to come. There has always been an interesting little love triangle [Editor's Note: ?????] between Apocalypse, Sinister, and Cyclops. The reason, just in case no one knows, is because Cyclops' powers are one of the only things that can hurt Apocalypse. Don't believe me? Look it up. Anyway, the Marauders are being used properly. Gambit is worth drawing and Mystique is finally interesting. All is, almost, right with the world.

Silvestri's art? Its ok. It is almost dated. There are some clean lines, with his depiction of Angel being almost perfect. Beast looks really awesome, too. Some of the women look a lot like they use to back in the late nineties. I mean, butts all over the place and breasts hardly staying in their shirts. I'm just over it. It is really funny because this used to be the standard in the comic community. Now it is more about being subtle, more respectful. It really does feel like going back in time ten years, looking at Silvestri's pages.

This crossover is going to be a really, really long one. So buy some popcorn and get comfortable on the couch. With Ed Brubaker and associates on the case, I'm not really worried about it. If anything, this could be the start of even more wonderful stories for those mutant home-boys.

Crime Bible: The Five Lessons of Blood #1

Writer: Greg Rucka
Art: Tom Mandrake
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

Huh?

That's how I feel now-a-days half the time I read a comic. Any comic. It is like I've missed a billion years of comic reading, and I'm constantly playing catch up. Is the Crime Bible something I've heard before? Isn't this that bad movie with Nicholas Cage, where he sees a movie and has to chase a killer? Isn't that every movie he's made? Why does Nicholas Cage keep getting acting jobs? He's losing his hair. Whatever.

Crime Bible is about a book, the Black book. The Black book is based on the teachings of Cain, the first villain in the world. The five lessons of blood are sort of like the Ten Commandants. Deceit, Lust, Greed and Murder. And this particular issue has everything to do with deceit. We don't know who to trust, who to like, who is going to do what. And the ending is not at all what you'll think it will be.

First, I like Greg Rucka. He did wonders for Batman during the "No Man's Land" story line and I thank him from the bottom of my heart. Crime Bible is perfect for anyone who likes mysteries. This first issue is just the tip of a huge iceberg that should be interesting and entertaining. However, this comic has ninjas in it. And the main ninja says, "I am the tool of sin." Like, really? Is that still cool? I guess so. We still have people that go to Hot Tropics for new pants, and kids that think that Saw IV is the best movie ever made. So, yeah, I guess this kind of stuff is still appealing. I like the mystery of Crime Bible. And I like how we never know exactly what is going on, but know enough to keep reading. The art is good, if a little over inked. But it's a CRIME book so it has to be DARK. I'm sick of ninjas and I'm sick of kung fu fighting. I know. This is me saying that. I have the original Matrix in three different versions and I'm saying that I'm tired of kung-fu fighting. The world really is ending.

Since this is about crime stuff, it is obvious that 52 and the Countdown are tied into all this somehow. Expect all this Crime Bible stuff to float on the river that is the Final Crisis. Is there ever going to be a moment in the DC universe where bad guys are trying to burn the planet? Is anyone going to make it out alive? Will I have to read another 52 tie in next week? Stay tuned.

why do they think they need to change the ff origin

Mythos: Fantastic Four

Writer: Paul Jenkins
Artist: Paola Rivera
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.99

The Mythos line is designed to give a new and different twist to an old-school story. Hulk, X-men, and Spidey have all gotten the treatment from Paul Jenkins and Paolo Rivera, and they all look and read amazingly. But can the tried and true story of the Fantastic Four be better? Changed? Evolved?

Mythos: Fantastic Four starts off with the crew on a Russian space station, getting ready to watch the Solar storm. Johnny Storm goofs around in a space suit while Reed Richards shows how smart he is, using all those big, new fangled words. There is the hint that Read Richard's arrogance will lead to their destruction, and sure enough, the space station goes boom. The four soak up a really huge dose of radiation and take a space shuttle back home to Earth, with the military waiting on them. The shuttle's reactor leaked to, throwing into doubt exactly how or what gave the four some fantastic powers. There is also a mystery. With the crew incapacitated, who exactly flew the shuttle to Earth?

I have a few problems with this new origin story and the original Fantastic Four origin story in general. First, why, really, did anyone ever allow Johnny Storm into space? It blows my mind and makes absolutely no sense what so ever. It would be like sending a monkey into a room to defuse a bomb. It would be exactly like that. Second, letting the Fantastic Four get the powers accidentally sort of makes them these lucky innocents. They fell into these powers and then they go out and save the world. Great for them. I sort of like heroes who have a reason to put the tights on. Spider-man and Daredevil have more appeal to me because they actually have this guilt pushing them on. Jenkins tries to infuse this into the story, making Reed's arrogance the cause of their destruction. But I don't buy it. It feels forced and a bit unnatural.

Those are all problems I've always had with the Fantastic Four. Mythos isn't really addressing them or fixing them. Mythos just re-tells them. Rivera's art is amazing and I'm a huge fan of Jenkins, but there is nothing new here, nothing that separates it from the original. It's a great story. But, if you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times before.
