Holiday Schedule

Our schedule is going to be pretty wacky around Thanksgiving, so here's the rundown:

Thursday, November 22nd - Fanboy Comics Closed
Friday, November 23rd - Great Specials (See Below)
Thursday, November 29th - Comic Order Arrives (One Day Late)

Hopefully that's clear enough for everyone. If there are any questions about our schedule, feel free to call or email us just to make sure you know what's going down!

Black Friday Sale!

That's right, against all of our better judgment, we at Fanboy Comics are going to be running a special sale on the day after Thanksgiving, colloquially known among retailers as "Black Friday."  The name of course stems from the fact that it is a dark, evil day during which lives and livelihoods are ruined.  However, it's great for you, the customer!  Fanboy Comics' theme for Black Friday is Buy One, Get One Half Off!  BOGOHO, if you would.  We'll be offering this deal on Trade Paperbacks, Hardcovers, T-Shirts, Comic Sets, Posters and more!  We'll also be offering similar but lesser deals on Gaming merchandise.  All of this excludes new releases and previously discounted items, as usual.

We'll also have out a liquidation table with action figures available at huge discounts.  Trust me, we have more action figures than we know what to do with.

can you name all the event books in this logo? if so, send me an email and I might give you something, maybe!

Fanboy Comics has been operating in Southeastern North Carolina for 15 years, and we'll be celebrating this fact on Saturday, December 1st.  We'll be having a huge anniversary super-sale that afternoon, a comic signing, and a Guitar Hero III tournament.   There will also be special gift bags for the first fifty people through the door on Saturday!  If you're looking for more information about this event, you can visit our special 15th Anniversary website:

We hope to see you there!

The Fanboy Spotlight
The Goon: Chinatown HC
'forget it, jake. it's chinatown. but with zombies, i guess'$19.95

I don't know enough about the Goon to do this description justice, so here's what Dark Horse has to say:

Dark Horse is very proud to present the first original graphic novel from Eisner Award-laden swami Eric Powell. Powell has been sowing the seeds of Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker for years in his award-winning bimonthly series The Goon, and salivating fans may now feast their eyes on the Goon's formative backstory of love, loss, and extortion--a lengthy tale that demanded to be told in this uninterrupted format.

Spiritual leader of Tennessee and hero to the Great Unwashed, Powell escaped catastrophic death and mother-shaming scandal to bring this work to fruition. He's a sensitive man in insensitive times. But be warned: this book ain't funny.

Marvel HeroClix: Mutations and Monsters
hopefully they'll have the most hideous mutant of them all, rob schneider *RIMSHOT*Boosters: $10.99
Brick of 10 Boosters: $99.00

Loaded with memorable X-Men such as the classic team, Colossus, and Archangel, as well as the first HeroClix appearances of several fan-favorite X-universe characters like Omega Red, Mutations and Monsters is sure to please even the most die-hard mutant fan! Mutations and Monsters also allows players to re-create their favorite battles from one of the summer's biggest comic events, "World War Hulk", with several key characters from the storyline like the Green Scar and the Silver Savage.

Buy your HeroClix by the brick and get a limited edition Dark Beast figure for free!

52 Vol. 4 and World War III TPs
TWEEN, YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD, TWEEN!52 Vol. 4 TP - $19.99
World War III TP - $17.99

This is it, the grand conclusion to one of comics' greatest epics! For twenty dollars, you get the final thirteen issues of 52, with commentary from the creators, extras, and all sorts of stuff. Also releaseing this week is the collection of the World War III miniseries that released concurrently with Week 50 of 52. The World War III miniseries isn't necessary to the enjoyment of 52, but it is a quality work that stands well alongside the series. I'd pick up both, but, at the very least, any DC comics fan should own all of 52 in one form or another.

Vampire: the Requiem - Requiem for Rome
finally you can larp and when somebody calls you a nerd you can claim its a toga party$31.99

I've fallen out of picking up the Vampire: The Requiem books lately, but this will be the one that draws me back in.  White Wolf has always teased about a historical setting for Vampire set in ancient Rome, and this is it.  If you're a Vampire fan, and you don't understand why vampire society in ancient Rome will be awesome, then, well, there's no hope for you.  Seriously, check this one out if you've ever had any interest in the World of Darkness.

Captain America: The Death of Captain America Vol. 1 HC
spoiler alert - captain america dies in this one$19.99

Well, if you haven't been reading the Death of Captain America storyline, (somehow) you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity to follow what is one of the best Captain America stories in the character's history--and all without him being in it.  If you don't understand how the Captain America book is still going without Cap, then I would suggest you pick up this story arc, and you'll find that Captain America is just as important a character in the book dead as he was alive.  Don't ask me how Ed Brubaker pulls it off, just chalk it up to the fact that he wears a fedora.

X-Men: God Loves Man Kills Premiere HC
boy i would never imagine such a heavy-handed title from chris claremont, NO SIR$19.99

This collects an X-Men story that I haven't read!  I don't know one damn thing about it!  Take it away, anonymous marketing stooge:

The Uncanny X-Men. Magneto, master of magnetism. The bitterest of enemies for years. But now they must join forces against a new adversary who threatens them all and the entire world besides…in the name of God. One of Chris Claremont's most powerful and influential stories, the partial basis for X2 is reprinted here for the first time in years.

Sounds cool!

i find the idea of people being nostalgic for this journal deliciously ironicNostalgia Journal #24

This auction is for the comic fanzine Nostalgia Journal #24 published in 1976. This issue features an article on Starcon '76 and features many pictures, a two page ad for Richard Corben's Bloodstar, and an original Adam Warlock cover.

Magazine is newspaper, black and white and is 42 pages (counting covers). Magazine has started to turn yellow and has some chipping that is typical of this type of newspaper, and a stray pen mark on back cover. Otherwise magazine is nice condition with overall high eye appeal

drugs are the worst thing that can exist in the worldTeenage Booby Trap Anti-Drug Comic

This auction contains the rare hard to find anti drug comic Teenage Booby Trap published in the 1970s by the US government. This comic is a modern day Reefer Madness US government anti-drug comic. This is a very rare hard to find comic written and art by Malcolm Ater and possibly Jack Sparling. This is a modern day trip back to all the anti-drug craze movies and materials of the 1950s. Don't miss out on this very hard to find piece. You must read it to believe it.

STORY PLOT: This is an incredible anti-drug comic book giveaway produced by the now defecut bureau of narcotics and derous drugs (later the DEA) in 1970. This 32 page small size booklet is full of propaganda and some far out "facts". All the drugs are discussed and the history of drug use and abuse is discussed in some depth. Drugs are shown being used and abused on almost every page. Marijuana (classified as a hallucinogen) and how it is a gate way drug is shown in detail, LSD and bad tripping, amphetamines, metamphetamines and cocaine, the problem of overdosing on amphetamines causing the sensation of bugs crawling all over you, barbiturates and the convulsions they b ring are discussed and of course opium, morphine, heroin and the horrors of opiate withdrawal are fully shown in great comic book detail. This is a very cool comic book with its detailed drawings of the horrors of drug abuse and the consequences like suicide, involvement in organized crime, withdrawal and jail. The book is done in the style of the informational premium comics done in the 50s and 60s without word balloons but most definitely comic book in style, done in the psychedelic art motif that many love comics by DC used back in this period, the book is full of actual as well as exaggerated information for your favorite trouble teen.

Book is in extremely nice shape. (VF+/NM) or better grade. Congressman stamp on the back cover, otherwise in perfect condition. Newspaper print, measures 5 x 7", staple bound, full color.

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

Batman and the Oustiders #1

Writer: Chuck Dixon
Penciller: Julian Lopez
Inker: Bit
Colorist: Marta Martinez
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

This is how you write a comic book.

This is almost a paint-by-numbers comic creation. Everything about this is nearly perfect. I almost want to say it is perfect, that it lacks a single flaw. But doing that means that if a flaw is found, am I wrong. I want to say that there is a flaw somewhere in this comic. Something isn't working the right way. But I couldn't find it. If you see something, email it to me and let me know. Ok? That would be great.

Basic set up, Jardine Limited, located in Central City, has been handling radioactive materials. Batman's newest time, the Outsiders, is sent to investigate. Batman is save and sound in the Bat-cave, with Thunder asking him a million questions. This is the Batman I love. He's cool, calm, and completely in control. A lot of people have been writing Batman as emotional or a bit accessable. The Batman I like is cold and calculating, knowing everything before anyone else can even think about it. His new team: Katana, Cat-woman, the Martian Manhunter, Metamorpho, and Grace. And unlike the JLA, which tends to just run into a place and start punching people, the Outsiders play the role like spies. The go in, they sneak around, and they use their heads before they use their fists.

Two things that impress me right away. The comic has zero exposition. Just in case you don't know, exposition is the little text boxes that fill a reader into what is going on. Most writers use the text boxes to give tons of information, so the writer doesn't have to do any work. A good comic writer lets the artist paint the picture to give the information that is needed. And a good writer lets the characters talk, giving us just enough information we need to get the story moving. This is skillful and amazingly smart. I give Chuck Dixon all the credit here. He is, in my mind, the premiere Batman writer. He made Nightwing cool. He made Robin the best book on the market. He knows Batman and how to write characters that would hang out with Batman. In my mind, no one can top the work that Chuck Dixon does for DC. Period.

The art is refreshing as well. But I have to give credit to the entire art team on this one. The inks, the coloring, the penciling, they are all done amazingly well. The book looks good. But it doesn't look too good. You know? Some books look amazing, but they take forever to come out. This book will ship on time, with sharp and concise pages that get the job done in an excellent way.

I can't say enough good things here. The story is clear, the characters act exactly like they are suppose to, with an ending that isn't shocking, but is most-def interesting. This will be another monthly book for me, hands down.

World of Warcraft #1

Writer: Walter Simonson
Penciler: Ludo Lullabi
Inker: Sandra Hope
Colorist: Randy Mayor
Publisher: Wildstorm/DC Comics

So, like, right now, there are over nine million people that are playing or have accounts for World of Warcraft. That is a lot, A LOT, of people playing the game. So, you know, if you want to make some easy loot, then why not base a comic book off the video game? That will make tons upon tons of cash, right? Right? Hello?

The science is there, and the numbers make sense. If even one million of the nine million people buy this comic, they would be rich, rich, rich! But, I'm not concerned with how much money a comic should make. I'm worried about if the comic is good or not. There are some cool things here, but I'm not all excited about it.

World of Warcraft starts with a random human laying in a lake. He doesn't know who he is, or why he's there. Orcs toss him into a gladiator training camp with a Blood Elf and a Night Elf. The Night Elf can metamorph into things, while the Blood Elf is a hot Elf chick who can drain you of your magic. Sounds like a date I went on once. [Editor's Note: BADUMP-CRISH] Nonsense ensues when their Orc masters see what their slaves are made of, pitting them against some other orcs with horns and a midget orc with a strange eye patch. There are things made of skeletons and lots of swords and hammers and stuff and I got really bored and stopped reading this halfway and play video games and then went back to reading. Un. Im. Pressed.

If you've read any fantasy comics, you won't care about this. The newest re-launch Conan is twenty times better than this comic. I'm sure if you are a fan of World of Warcraft, you'd get great satisfaction from all the cool words they use and some of the magic-trickery. But new readers won't really be engaged. The colors are tight and the art isn't horrible. The story is lacking, hoping that readers would care about clichéd characters fighting in a cliché gladiator tournament. Let me save you some trouble. The human with no memory? He's probably some savior. I'll bet you, like, a billion dollars. Pass on this one.

HE HASN'T BEEN BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE IT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THAT FOR REALS

Captain Marvel #1

Writer: Brian Reed
Penciler: Lee Weeks
Inks: Stefano Gaudiano
Colors: Jason Keith

Captain Marvel doesn't need to be alive. Neither does the Jason Todd Robin. Neither does Bucky. And the Superman from Kingdom Come? He doesn't need to be around, either. Hal Jordan should have stayed dead. And, for real, if Steve Rogers comes back from the grave, I'm going to puke.

Death in comics doesn't mean anything, and that depresses me. When a character dies, they will come back. It isn't an "if". They are going to come back. Jean Grey will be back. That's a promise. And I was talking to Cyrus about Cable being dead and we don't even pretend to put weight on it. When a comic character dies, it is more like they are not going to be in the book for a while. That is sad, but it isn't devastating. Captain America dying was surprising, but it didn't blow me away. (Spoiler!) Rick Jones looked like he died at the end of World War Hulk, but I won't bet on it. He is going to come back sooner or later. This is a fact of the industry that annoys me. Death should matter.

Anyway, Captain Marvel is back. Yay. He is the Captain Marvel from the past that has been slung to our present, before he died of cancer. But, the way time travel works, things have to happen, whether you move around the timeline or not. So he is going to die of cancer one day and he knows he is going to die of cancer. This makes things seem very surreal to him. He has a chance to look at his life in a way most of us wouldn't. We all know, in the abstract, that our lives here are limited. But Captain Marvel's end is coming in a very short period of time. Should he try to relax? Enjoy himself? Or should he make his mark on the world, letting everyone know that he is one of the greatest hero of all time? He doesn't want to die in a bed, surrounded by friends. Warriors like to die fighting.

No matter how much I want to not like this book, it is a good read. Iron man (of course) makes an appearance, giving the back story and where Marvel fits in this world. Captain Marvel is very stoic, very alien, almost lifeless. He has the charm of a dead man, which makes sense now that I think about it. For some reason he fights a villain, but I have no idea why the villain shows up. And he kills a giant robot, which is always a good time.

If anything, you should pick this book up for its potential. There is a lot of it. I'm eager to know how Captain Marvel deals with having children, especially the current Quasar (that's his daughter), plus all favorites like Silver Surfer and Thanos. If Thanos doesn't make an appearance soon in this book, it will be a crime against nature. More than that, I hope they treat the Captain Marvel legacy with respect and tact. Somehow, I doubt it.

What can one say about All-Star Batman and Robin that hasn't already been said?  Well, I could say that it's a work of staggering genius.  I don't think anyone's said anything like that about it.  You know what, though?  It might be.  Frank Miller is writing the best Frank Miller parody you could ever imagine, and nobody knows if he's being serious or not.  Heck, he might have started out serious and is now no longer being serious.  Nobody knows.  He's too busy wearing his artsy hat and telling whoever's playing the Spirit to smile less and grimace more to tell anyone.
