The Fanboy Spotlight
Batman: The Killing Joke Special Edition HC
whatever man nobody cares about batman anymore$17.99

So anyway, a bunch of years ago, Alan Moore wrote a comic book called Batman: The Killing Joke and I guess it was alright.  Moore has said of it, "I don't think it's a very good book. It's not saying anything very interesting."  A glowing review, to be sure.  Anyway, I guess DC is doing some sort of "Alan Moore: a Career of Mediocrity" tribute so they're relasing this hardcover so he can bask in his shame, or something.

The Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Vol. 38
you can finally find out how much your copy of civil war #5 is worth (it is worth $3.99)$29.95

Sure, this is mainly a bunch of comic book prices, but it also "is packed with all sorts of details from the world of comics including feature articles on the fabled DC ashcan comics, the Gaines file copies and the history of Star Wars in comics." Sounds exciting!

Mighty Avengers Vol. 1 Premiere HC
hey ultron is a chick because frank cho refuses to draw anything without breasts$19.99

The Mighty Avengers were the pro-registration superhero team that appeared in the wake of Civil War.  That needlessly expository sentence is there not only to fill space, but also to remind you how long ago this book came out.  I guess that's one of the pitfalls of filling your book with Frank Cho's gorgeous artwork--it will never come out.  Hey, it's out now, though, so that's good!  Oh, and it was also pretty awesome, and brought back the oft-maligned thought balloons in a way that made sense and also set up some pretty funny jokes at times.

Outsiders: Five of a Kind TP
what a mess$14.99

Check out the genesis of the current Batman and the Outsiders series with this collection of five one-shot issues where they pick the team!  Except most of the decisions are changed in the first or second issue of the series!  And also, a lot of the things don't make sense!  But I guess that's what happens when you change a comic book's entire creative team after it's solicited!  Good job, DC!

"These are still pretty good stories though," he begrudgingly admitted.

Yu-Gi-Oh: Phantom Darkness Special Edition
oh hannibal necromancer, you've stolen my heart$10.99

This is what I wrote before about Phantom Darkness:

"As near as I can tell, somebody on the internet who knows what they're doing wrote this:

"The Madness continues as Phantom Darkness introduces yet another series of incredibly powerful monsters and support cards. PTDN will introduce a new class of Monster named Yubel who is featured on the cover of the box. Although the End-Form of Yubel is quite difficult to summon onto the field, his earlier forms are quite significant and much easier to summon making him quite viable for tournament decks.

"Other noteworthy cards in the set would be cards like Super Fusion that allows for use of Fusion Material Monsters from either yours or opponent's side of the field to special summon your Fusion Monster. Cyber Vary, Volcanic Counter, Dark Horus Dragon, Dark Rainbow Dragon, and many other sweet cards grace Phantom Darkness. Overall a wonderful set that adds a lot of new firepower to cards from sets like Force of the Breaker, Tactical Evolution, and Gladiator's Assault! There's even some new support cards for Cyber Dragon!

"If this is incredibly wrong...uh, sorry, I guess. Upper Deck doesn't like to make information available to anyone."

As near as I can tell, it's pretty much the same for the Special Edition!

Schedule Schmedule

As usual, a great many comic books have been pushed back to a later date. This news is so shocking that we are now developing a weekly section where we announce comic delays, so you can better know when your favorite books are coming out. Or when the next delay announcement will be, whatever. We'll also include other schedule announcements, like different products coming back in stock, second printings, and the like. But this is the comic industry, and we all know which type of announcment we will see the most.

Serenity: Better Days #1

Story: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews
Art: Will Conrad
Colors: Michelle Madsen
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $2.99
Rating: Junior High

It's not like I don't like Joss Whedon. I just don't know what all the fuss is about. (Suddenly, Jarvis Slacks hears the screams of a billion fan boys and hears the footsteps of the men sent to kill him.) Whatever. He wrote Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't care how good the show is, it's still Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't particularly care at all. I know a lot of you out there do. Great. So what.

I've never watched Serenity, either. I just don't watch much television. It just has never been something I was in to. So, I admit early that some of the stuff in Serenity #1 doesn't make sense to me. When you read a comic based on a television show, you have the connection of knowing the characters and the situations. When you don't have that connection, the comic feels a bit underwhelming. That has nothing to do with the writing or art style. The writing and art in this book is really good. I just don't have the excitement or interest of someone who may be a Serenity fan.

The story is pretty basic. Some mean dude has a machine. He sends it after the good guys. The good guys steal it. There is a lot of talk of money in the story, which sort of bothers me. I've always liked the Star Trek future, where no one uses money anymore and people do stuff because they want to. And Joss Whedon is forced to explain certain things through dialogue. When he does this, the dialogue seems extremely forced and over done. The story has a great pacing when there is action involved. The panels are smooth and the story telling is very easy to follow.

For Serenity fans only, I'm afraid. This is only a three part series. If Whedon had more time, I'm sure he could weave a storyline that would be completely engaging to me. Sadly, some television excitement is lost in the comic translation.

RATING: 4/5

I, too, hope this whole series PANS out HA HA HA HA GET IT LIKE PETER PAN

Avengers: Fairy Tales #1

Writer: C.B. Cebulski
Art: Joao Lemos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99
Rating: Pre-School

The story of Peter Pan has never interested me. Ever. I've always thought it was sort of boring. I'm not being a hater here. I'm just being real. I just don't really care. Now, if you put the Avengers into the Peter Pan mythos, and make it relative to the Avengers, then you've go something wonderful.

Avengers: Fairy Tales really surprised me. I thought it was going to be contrived and dull, making remarks to things that either don't make sense or I don't care about. Instead it was highly refreshing and original. Wanda and Pietro are the children taken to Neverland. Captain America is Peter Pan. The Wasp is the fairy. It might just be because the Scarlet Witch is the tragic character right now, but seeing her in a comic is great, even one when she's just telling the story. It gives the story a lot more weight because we know how it ends for her.

The art is just beautiful. Just amazing. The lines are simple, but the pages are so detailed and complex. It's funny to me. You can always see when an artist or writer really loves the piece they are working on. It shows an attention to detail that a lot of comics are missing today.

I'm eager to see how the rest of the series pans out. If the other issues are like this one, this is going to be a great mini-series.

RATING: 5/5

apparently a complete lack of original ideas and an uniteresting premise combined with stale writing only gets you a 4 out of 5

The Last Defenders #1

Plot and Script: Joe Casey
Plot and Breakdowns: Keith Giffen
Pencils: Jim Muniz
Inks: Cam Smith
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99
Rating: Fifth Grade art class

I don't care any more. In The Last Defenders, one of the characters even makes mention of it. "This whole initiative thing, it's getting kinda old, isn't it?" Yes, yes it is getting old. At first it was fresh and new, because the Civil War was fresh and new and we loved all the crazy stuff that Tony Stark was doing. We liked how messed up the whole affair was. But now? After months and months of it? I'm just over it. And, judging from this comic, so is the rest of the world.

It is a paint-by-numbers story by this point. Nighthawk wants to start the Defenders up again. He has a team planned out and everything. But Tony Stark sneaks behind him and starts up his own Defenders team, and places them in New Jersey. The idea that the Defenders are in New Jersey is suppose to be this on going joke. But one Yankee state is like the rest, so it's lost on me. And the team? Yeah, it is completely lost on me too. Colossus? She-Hulk? Blazing Skull? Who the hell is Blazing Skull? I have absolutely no idea how or why these characters are on the team. Colossus is an X-man, right? Man, I'm over that, too. Anyway, something bad happens, Nighthawk questions himself as a leader, people punch other people, and there is some mention of the Son of Satan. Then I fell asleep.

Seriously, I stopped caring about the whole Initiative thing a long time ago. And this book feels like the last few bits of flame before the entire fire goes out. I doubt, seriously, that anyone cares about any of these characters. Yeah, Colossus and She-Hulk are cool. But you can see them in other books. The art is good, but not worth buying the whole comic. And Nighthawk? Seriously? The writing is fine. Joe Casey is one of my favorites. But he seems stale here just because he's attached to it. Can we have something new, please? We are all ready for it, apparently.

Notes From the Editor

Bob Gale has written the two most recent issues of the now-thrice-monthly Amazing Spider-Man--but what qualifications does he have as a writer?  Well, he was a screenwriter for the excellent Back to the Future, but screenwriting and comics writing aren't exactly the same.  If you've been reading Gale's Amazing Spidey, you know that!  He's using all the tools comics provide that film doesn't, and his favorite tool in that toolbox is the thought balloon.  He's using it all over the place--Spidey thinks even more than he talks!

However, what if you could use such a versatile tool as the thought balloon in film?  Well, let's take a look at what Bob Gale's other greatest work, the Back to the Future Trilogy, might have looked like with this amazing tool (click for a larger, more legible version).

All-Star Superman gets singled out this week because, well, it's an amazing comic book.  There aren't really many comic books that are better than this one, and certainly not many at DC.  Pretty much, if you've ever enjoyed Superman at any point, then you'll enjoy this book.  It's an amazing work, and if you don't read it, it's because there is something wrong with you.  That's right, I said it.

THESE BOOKS ARE A SECRETThe "Uh-Oh We Have to Get These Books Out Before Secret Invasion #1 Next Week" Secret Invasion Infiltration Skrulltacular

Secret Invasion #1 comes out next week, and in honor of that, we're getting Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, and Ms. Marvel so that way they can get their big Secret Invasion reveals out there before they become moot.  Thrill in Mighty Avengers as they face Doctor Doom and probably a fairly big Skrull reveal happens (I base this on nothing but Marvel's decision to not send us a preview copy of this book when they almost always do otherwise)!  Be amazed as something Skrull-related happens to Echo or Ronin or whatever!  Gasp as you actually buy a copy of Ms. Marvel, which is actually a pretty good book that you only bought during Civil War!  Truly, we are on Skrull Street in Skrulltown USA, taking the train to Skrull Station!
